Barcelona fairly cooking here. Two up but should be more. The result won’t affect the title but I thought Real would be slightly better than this.

4-0 now.   Turns out that if you're haemorrhaging money and can't afford to keep your best players then all you need to do is buy a load more really good players in January and things will work themselves out.  The universe must be an amazing place for some people, right?

Kind of bizarre casualness in front of goal really.

Those sheets covering seats are bringing back lockdown vibes - why are they there?

Since Russia got kicked from World Cup it doesn't seem right that Poland get a by to the next qualification round. Ukraine should get that and Lewandowski's Poland get given Ukraine's qualification opponents which is... actually nevermind I think doing it the current way is fine.

Hard to see ahead that far, but at the moment, I can't see Ukraine being able to play Scotland and then Wales or Austria in June.

Even if Russia leave and there is some sort of peace in the next 6/8 weeks then a lot of those players that don't play outside of Ukraine won't have kicked a ball for a long while.

No idea what happens then?

I'm off to Wales/Austria tomorrow - hard to call - be interesting if Bale and Ramsey can turn it on despite barely playing.  I suspect they will.

I imagine if Ukraine are unable to take part in any qualifier before some reasonable deadline (August, perhaps, which would be three months before the tournament), then they'll have to withdraw. Which would suck for them, but then it's way down the list of priorities at the moment.

Apparently Russia has launched a bid to host Euro 2028. Or maybe they’ll just see who gets the tournament and invade that country too.

A joint UK and Ireland bid was expected to go unopposed, but there's last minute bids from both Turkey and Russia. So it's UK & Ireland v Turkey in reality, I suppose.

Russia's bid should be dismissed out of hand, really - a suspended association shouldn't be participating in any form. The 2032 bids were also submitted today, so that's between Russia, Turkey and Italy.

Turkey's an interesting bid, as unless they plan to host all of the games in the European part of Istanbul, it'd be the first Euros with a load of the games in Asia.

Er, unlike Euro 2020 which only had four...

They might get some sort of bye. God knows how they'd do that.

Defoe has retired. The kind of striker I like, sharp, fast, ability to shoot at the end of a run straight on, guaranteed to score wherever he goes. Just never mega prolific.

Not dissimilar in style to Aguero really, when you watch these goals. The Arsenal goal is great

Interestingly* he retired with the same amount of club appearances as Rooney. With the same amount of goals scored too! No..8 goal difference...

*not really

Except in his last spell at Sunderland.

Maybe that's why he retired.

It was only 2 starts to be fair, but yeah, that almost certainly helped convince him time was up.

This is horribly tense.

The Austria goal looked to be clearly offside in the build-up, but there's probably some rule they applied about phases because it was quite a few seconds after the offside that the goal was scored.

Edit - For god's sake Dan James, put one of these chances away!  😬
