Football Thread 2021/2022

I don't know what this means for Chelsea going forward, but it's surely a good thing that we no longer have a Russian gangster as a Premier League owner.  Now we need to figure out how to get rid of Man City and Newcastle United's owners.

I've found some of the reaction around Abramovich's scrambling to offload Chelsea before it was seized disturbing. The consensus on football Reddit and Twitter (I know, neither is somewhere to go if you want to see any signs of intelligent life) is that he was the best owner ever, a king, that he's completed football.  The Chelsea fans choosing to disrupt the moment of applause for Ukraine by chanting Abramovich's name is proof positive that sportswashing works. They chose to show implicit support for Putin because his mate bought them Eden Hazard.  This during something as unambiguously evil as the invasion of Ukraine. Wasn't it the same day that Russia shelled the safe corridor they had pretended to create for refugees?

Ryanair probably do flights for about £30 to "Lille" (which probably lands them in Belgium) but I'm just presenting solutions here.

In all seriousness Lille is probably the easiest away game to get to in Europe for Chelsea. It’s on the Eurostar, and it’s about the same distance from St Pancras (in terms of time) as Derby or Nottingham.

If this situation persists for Chelsea, aren't they going to end up playing home games with just a crowd of their own season ticket holders? That seems quite advantageous!

I would have thought the authorities could just permit sales to continue but require that the funds received go into escrow or whatever. Or to UNICEF!

😂 football fans are fucking brutal.

all the shit Chelsea have to go through and you want to point out that they will benefit from having only Chelsea fans at home games.

It was more generally an observation that the sanctions seem a bit clumsy in their effect, and this was one respect in which that's true.

But equally, my sympathy for Chelsea is fairly limited. If you get into bed with someone like this, with a very dubious accumulation of wealth, then you can't be too upset when the consequences of that finally arrive. Would you empathise with Newcastle or City fans discovering the same in the future?

No - in the case of Newcastle their owner murders journalists so there will be a distinct lack of empathy from me.

I’m a rational man, I really am. I dare not say Villa look decent tonight because I know I’ll fucking jinx it so I’m saying nothing.

Spoiler

Definitely loving the claret shorts and socks combo too. Prefer it to the traditional white if I’m being honest.

I think away tickets can still be sold as they go through the other club

Not how it works.

The away club request a number of tickets from the host club that they must pay for.  They then sell those to their own fans for the price they choose (usually face value, but can discount up to three times a season).  Any unsold tickets mean the away club is out of pocket.

I am starting to think that Bielsa fellow may have vastly overachieved with a group of players that are Championship level. Who knew, eh?

Also that changing managers when Leeds have been playing a defined system for three and a half years was an insane gamble.

Where is the Championship thread?

Leeds are this seasons Sheffield United. Overachieved in their first season back and unable to get close to that level in their second. I still don’t think they’ll go down because Norwich, Watford and Everton even worse than they are.

Chelsea are about to return to their pre Abromovich era, whoever takes over isn’t going to be as free spending as he was.
