Football Thread 2021/2022

Yes, it was quite obvious you were picking and choosing.

Fun question on a Sunday night - which obviously has no answer.  If everyone is playing on their very best day:

Van Dijk and Matip or Varane and Maguire or Silva and Rudiger?

Mane and Salah or Ronaldo and Cavani or Lukaku and Havertz?

Pogba and Fred or Henderson and Fabinho or Kante and Kovacic?

De Gea or Alisson or Mendy?

FWIW,  I'd go Van Dijk and Matip. Ronaldo and Cavani, Pogba and Fred and Alisson.

Which means I've left out anyone from the current European and World champions, including my favourite player to watch.  That's football, eh?

Van Djik and Matip (although VVD and Silva would be a great pairing)

Mane and Salah (if you’re suggesting Ronaldo from 5 years ago, fine, but now? Even on a good day he’s a liability in a team)

Kante and Kovacic (you can keep Kovacic, Kante on his own is the best DM in the league, if not Europe… and the world!)

Allison (toughest choice but have reservations about De Gea’s organisation and distribution despite him

being a world class shot-stopper)

Kante and De Bruyne, with Thiago (when he’s fit) would be my midfield of choice. Sancho would work well in Liverpool’s front three, but then the club went and bought Diaz for half the price.

The words "playing on their very best day" kind of gave you a hint.

It's a strange thing to compare though as Ronaldo and Cavani's best days are behind them. Those days aren't coming back. In a real world situation there is no chance any manager swaps Salah and Mane for those pair - unless it also involves a time machine.

Yeah, Salah’s best day Vs Ronaldo’s best day now isn’t even a choice. One serves the interests of himself, the other plays in a team.

Salah even has better abs these days too, which definitely matters in these top trump stakes. Lay off the cola pop Chris!

As individuals or on talent, I really can't see any of the United players I mentioned (which is over half of the team) being better than their counterparts.

United players are less likely to be tired because they don't run as much.

Er, does that happen a lot? I couldn't be bothered with the second half, because it seemed pretty clear where this was going, but surely just getting within 30 yards of the opposition goal gets you 0.01 xG?

I think xG is based on having had a shot, which United didn't bother doing.

Incidentally, that seems like a bit of a glaring error in the system, in that you can work a fantastic opportunity for a striker but if they swing and miss the ball, that's worth less than having a punt from 70 yards.

You put the word current there, not me.

It's a daft argument. Peak Ronaldo has long gone. As I said before you might as well be talking about Cantona and players of that ilk if this is a fantasy football debate.

Well what's the point in comparing 2008-2018 Ronaldo to 2022 Salah? It's utterly pointless.

We all know Ronaldo is one of the greatest players of all time, but you were talking about which of the players currently at  United you'd have over Liverpool and Chelsea players. The answer is none right now.

You can't just pluck from their best years (which weren't even at United) to say you'd have him over Salah.

Ronaldo would be 5th choice attacker at best for Liverpool, I’d say 6th!* He’s childish aswell, everyone probably hates him

*He’ll score a hatrick at Anfield in a few weeks now I’ve said that

Depends if he can be bothered to turn up.

Looking at that list, it's telling how many players either arrive at Old Trafford older and past their peak, or younger and then go backwards in their development. Ronaldo's best days were at Real Madrid, Cavani at PSG, Pogba at Juve, Varane at RM, Maguire at Leicester. Fred god knows.

I think the answer is VVD/Matip, Ronaldo/Cavani, Kante/Kovavic, Alisson (if it's about those players at their peak at any club).

De Gea

Van Dijk and Matip

Kante and Kovacic

Mane and Salah

Any other choice is just plain madness (GK is open though). Imagine choosing a midfield that contains Fred! ludicrous.

Burnley fans eh?

Is there any actual good use for the stat anyway?

It's just one stat out of many. It'll have uses as part of a more complete set, but anyone looking at a single game's xG and deciding that a particular team were lucky/unlucky in that match are taking it too far.

Except, of course, in Football Manager where I was definitely robbed!

It’s weird to think that when Villa beat Everton 3-0 in September they were one of the form teams in the league. They got 13 points from their opening six games and they’ve only managed 9 since.  If the season started on 1st October they’d be bottom of the league and 9 points from safety.  At some point the “they’ll probably be fine” argument doesn’t make sense any more.  Yes, they’ve got games in hand but damn.
