I feel this way about my series x games that run at 4K/120 - like ori. It’s bad compared to how they could run with more juice under the hood.

Great. Presumably when the time comes to follow up the Series X, you won’t be impressed if they address that by sticking a stand on it.

Hold on - is this suggesting that the Switch is simply a Wii U with a stand on it? Because if so, MEGATON and I'll go dig my hybid portable Wii U out of storage - is the screen under the flap?

No, it’s a suggestion that when a machine is in desperate need of a performance upgrade, tackling something that doesn’t improve the performance in any significant way is a disappointment.

It’s hardly cryptic, if you can read.

But it's not in desperate need of a performance upgrade is it. It's still the #1 selling piece of hardware in the world. And it's got a schedule of games ahead that look great like Dread and Splatoon 3 and BOTW2.

A performance update now would split the userbase, and that very, very, very rarely works out well (for either developers or end users). It's something you do to re-invigorate a platform, not to cause issues with one that's cruising along very nicely thank-you-very-much.

It's like saying the PS5 is in desperate need of an upgrade because some games drop frames, don't have RT, and super high-end PCs exist.

The games you’re referring to as not running properly, or not optimal, or whatever it is about them, were both released quite early in the Switch’s cycle weren’t they, BOTW was a launch game. So it’s a bit late in the day to suggest they need better hardware, were you complaining about them back then too or just now that you know there is no hardware upgrade for the foreseeable future?

Let’s be realistic, the Switch is now in its fifth year and so whilst it’s still selling well, as far as I know, Nintendo aren’t going to release its successor - call it Switch Pro, Switch 2, whatever, but it’s probably at least a year away, and when it comes Nintendo will have games that make use of the new hardware. Until then they probably see no reason at all to release it because on the whole their games run fine on the current hardware. Christ, a good amount of their library runs a damn sight better than a lot of games on significantly more powerful hardware.

In the meantime though the upcoming games we’ve seen such as Metroid, Advance Wars, Kirby, Bayonetta, Pokemon, Mario Party etc, they all look to run just fine on the current model, unless you know otherwise?

That’s my whole (and endlessly repeated) point. The Switch is long in the tooth and needs more power. What was acceptable in 2017 or whatever does not cut the mustard today.

And no-one knows how new games will run until they play them. Videos, reviews and impressions don’t mean anything.

It would be like saying that if the PS5 hadn’t been launched only last year, certainly. If it had been launched years ago it would be the same situation.

Sorry I don’t agree with you, Breath of The Wild was acceptable enough to be regarded as the greatest game of all time, I don’t think a few dropped frames here and there would now on reflection make me think it doesn’t run properly, that’s just banal.

We’ll have to leave it there @ZOK because, with a few exceptions, Nintendo games run better than most, and that’s an unarguable fact -_-

They mean nothing! Nothing at all! All video game press is pointless and no more posting impressions of a game you’ve played as it won’t mean anything to anyone who hasn’t played it themselves.

Christ, what a load of bollocks. Funny, though

Sure. It doesn’t need a performance upgrade. But it really fucking needs a performance upgrade. Ya know?

The Switch OLED is disappointing as fuck and we all know it.

It’s only disappointing because the press were going wild with all these rumours about a 4K Switch with DLSS etc, but let’s be honest, looking at their line up of games there is nothing there anyway that would take advantage of more powerful hardware at the moment - but on the other hand, Metroid, Advance Wars etc. are all gonna look way better on that new bigger OLED screen, as will all the games.

Back on track, whilst I an anyone else with a sound mind am disappointed that the ‘new’ switch isn’t more powerful under the hood I am PUMPED to be getting mine in just over a week. I very glad it’s (sort of) launching with a brand new game like dread and think it’s going to pop on the OLED screen.

Had my email from the official Nintendo store saying they are prepping for dispatch/charging. Whoop whoop!

2017 was four years ago. How long should a console last? Three years? Big games can take four years to develop.

Just logged onto Amazon and they had pre-orders up for 8th October

Why on Earth would you go and post this? I've now gone and pre-ordered one myself!

Actually, this has the rare advantage of being a fully girlfriend-sanctioned purchase... mostly because she wants my original Switch off me once I get this one.

When the new hardware was announced this thread might as well have been called ‘The official everyone is disappointed because the Switch Pro is just a screen upgrade thread‘. Even I was taking the piss out of the promo material banging on about the ethernet port like it was a cool feature. We’ve been there, done that.

We’d all love a more powerful Switch, we really would. But for me, a larger and more attractive display is a better standalone upgrade than a faster CPU or GPU. It impacts everything I play on it from day one, rather than the few moments in Breath of the Wild when it dips below 30fps, or Hyrule Warriors 2. A display upgrade is why I bought the GBA SP, DS Lite, and 3DS XL. And while the New 3DS was faster, all it amounted to was Xenoblade Chronicles and some SNES games.

And let’s face it, devs wouldn’t be rushing to release 60fps patches or texture packs for their old games, and you won’t get exclusive games until it’s a full ‘Switch 2’ successor. So as an interim release before their next proper console, I’m perfectly happy with it.

@StrafeJust asked Amazon Support about the 13th delivery date. Apparently the order doesn’t qualify for release date delivery, but they didn’t explain why. Never mind. As long as one turns up, I’ll be very happy.

I’m thinking it’s because the order is fulfilled by Amazon EU and they ship it over from a mainland Europe fulfilment centre.

You’re very weird about this.

EDIT: Oh hang about, I’ve just realised you’re the guy who has a cupboard full of Amiibos! I get it now!
