Understandable, it's also the reason why I don't play it much - and if I'm not hanging around playing public matches when I love the game, someone picking it up for the first time and waiting 5 minutes for an unplayable match sure as hell won't either

It's a crying shame because even now it's the one fighting game I'd love to be at the absolute peak of all fighting games' popularity - it's just so damn good, and the fact I can't play smooth, enjoyable matches as and when I want kills me a little inside

I had a great time with this - something like 180 hours played in the end, by far my most played game this year - but it got to a point where it would only matchmake me with the same players over and over after a long wait.

I think VF6 is all but guaranteed, hoping on some exciting news out of Sega this year.

All i'd really want are a couple of new characters, stages and for them to tone down some of the more absurd 1mm off the ground combos (HI JEAN)

Had a delightful time getting a manly slapping from @Jonster’s mighty sumo just now. Wish more people played this game.

GGs again! Taka is too fun, I might spend some more time learning more than 2 moves and spamming P  Always up for more, drop a message in the PSN group and I'll likely come running if I'm online.

There seemed to be a fair number of decent connection lobbies up last night. Not sure if that's normal or not but it didn't seem too difficult to get a game, albeit unranked.

His connection was absolute dogshit to the point it was impossible to time counters against him, and he could just sort of auto combo with Lei where Vanessa's tighter timing on my usuals meant that I'd wind up dropping most of them

This is the ultimate problem with delay based net code.

I remember playing a Lei that basically did nothing but fully charged stepping punch into combo. This move is easily reactable with a side step but as soon as you throw delay into the mix, missing the sidestep leads to eating nearly half a bar of damage. Couple that with the delay making you miss your own juggle timings if you do get a chance to punish and the fight turns into a complete crap shoot.

It’s THE most important thing they need to change if they make a new version of the game. If they don’t, it will be pointless to play because the gameplay rules they implement won’t mean squat.

Managed to have quite a few half decent games of this last night!

Some matches were a bit ropey but the players were good and knew when they needed to be blocking/dodging so it wasn’t a case of needing to deal with mash. The joining was pretty consistent too, so I wasn’t waiting too long for someone to jump in.

Have to say, I really enjoyed it. I was so inspired I added some people from here as friends so I can hopefully join in the RLL sessions. So if you got a random request, it will be me :)

This game has such a lovely balance with options for every situation. It’s just about figuring them out.

One thing I’d like is when you’re in a room match waiting for someone to join that you can be training or watching matches. Would just help the time pass until someone jumps in.

GGs to @Jonster and @Kayin Amoh over the past couple of days.

Those fights made me realise how far away I was from having any kind of real strategy/setups and that I have just been playing reactionary (mainly because I kept falling for your setups ><)

After a a couple of laggy fights with randoms this morning, I ended up in the lab. Firstly to confirm that the guy I was playing, was playing online rules (pressing buttons when massively negative and getting away with it)

And secondly I started investigating options for certain scenarios. This just added to my realisation at how clueless I was and really quickly found stuff, that based on the opponents reaction to a situation, I could strangle them for large chunks of health. I think this is SUPER important for Goh as he doesn’t have the combos in neutral for opening people up, so you’re more reliant on setting something up.

I had been thinking about trying to start a 2nd character as I feel bad playing the same character over and over and there’s trophies linked to bringing up a 2nd character. However I’m now thinking I need to start properly labbing Goh to bring him up to speed before moving to someone else.

GGs @Goemon!

To be honest, I felt the same in that I didn't really have any setups and that I've been playing reactionary too! I had some pokes, but no plan to follow them up really. I know I've got some habits already though (some bad) that I'm trying to alter up a little though.

I spent a few hours in the lab last night - I figured I was leaving damage on the table and found I was. Just need to remember to use them in an actual match now. I was also never really going for any oki. so explored that a little bit too. Turns out there's some very good options out there! Slightly less afraid of wakeup kicks now...

Look at all you assholes spending time in the lab and improving your game while I - like a MAN - am hoping to scrub by on people being unfamiliar with Vanessa's nonsense

Ha! I, uh, should learn more fundamentals I think - and maybe something to do when I pin someone against the wall, I've literally never looked into it and yet you can do shit like this to people (in this case, Eileen and her light, puny frame)

Also, I should be getting a new keyboard delivered today so I can finally start using full stops again, it's gonna be (Jeffry Mc)wild

I loved my time with this but the longer I kept playing after launch the less enjoyable it became, because the opposition got filtered down to just the experienced players left. You need to feel some possibility of winning to enjoy the game. I wish they had done a better job of keeping the other n00bs engaged from the start.

What I find surprising about the whole thing is that we’re all there with green bars and solid gameplay.

So WTF is going on…!?

Why am I only running into red bar connections? Why can I not find decent matches when playing generally?

I don’t feel like I’ve had a connection session like this since the game came out! But this session proved that it exists, so why are we not seeing it more regularly?

I find the whole thing very confusing.

I wouldn’t think like this.

In the session yesterday I got schooled but it doesn’t mean I didn’t enjoy it. It can be great fun being in a friendly session with a group of people that are on the same wave length.

If you’re not winning you can have your own personal goals too. I’d been working on things in training and one thing that I was super chuffed with was putting some of it into practice in a fight. So getting a setup actually working and not choking when the opportunity occurred.

Also, playing better players can only improve your level, which is a good thing. Playing n00bs allows you to do the same shit over and over and get away with it, so you’re not being forced to adapt. In longer sessions like this you get more opportunity to adapt to something someone is doing and one of the most satisfying things can be adapting and punishing something that had caught you out in previous fights.

I actually really enjoyed your patience and willingness to actually defend at the appropriate time instead of trying to steal turns like a lot of the rest of us are guilty of. Made me wake up a bit and stop playing on autopilot so much and I really enjoyed all the games I had with everyone yesterday much more.

Now I  just need everyone to forget the terrible amount of tfts I missed.

Yep, had a blast. My Jeffry's not exactly where he needs to be (not a surprise, I only picked him up once this came out for funsies), and there's still a lot to learn... but I'm also trying to progress in about fifty games alongside real life stuff so it's a bit tough to get practice in.

And yeah, it's a good thing we all have green connections. Reminds you that they exist!

I do actually agree with you, and this is the experience I had early on in room matches. I would play the same people over and over, getting smashed into the dirt, until eventually I found the ways to win the odd round and occasionally the match. I had it in mind that once I had my 600 ranked matches done I would only play rooms and hopefully learn how to play better.

By the time I had done 600 ranked matches, room matches (for randoms at least) were dead. The only way I could get a fight was in ranked, and in that mode you get only get two shots at losing to the same player so there is little opportunity to learn anything.

I would join you guys but I’m on a different continent so I fear the netcode would not be up to it, never mind the timezone problem.

Playing this at the minute and I can’t believe some of the online bugs are still in here.

It still has the bug where after a ranked match it leaves you connected to the player and so no other matches can start until eventually after like 5-10 mins you get a msg saying ‘unable to connect to opponent’

A really bad one, which I just realised is that when you search a room match the connections at the side don’t reflect what the connection actually is. I knew it worked one way so it would say green, you’d go in and it would be yellow or even red but it actually works the other way too! Went into a red connection for a larf and when I got in there it was green!

I think this is potentially why you can sit for ages waiting for people to join games, because if people are seeing red on your connection they’ll just avoid you when in fact it could actually be a decent connection!

I wonder if they’ve sacked off doing any online work for this on the theory that it’s already given them the info they need (that there is a demand for VF) and they’re now working on something else. Feel like these bugs have been in there a long time

Edit: just seen another…was a red connection but I noticed the name was ‘controlphreak_uk’ go in and it’s full of green bars! So bad…

Thanks for the games to Faded! I was actually a little annoyed by the connection this time out and semi threw the last match - not intentionally, but I spent half of it trying to get out a move that refused to come out even long after it wasn't going to be useful. Just wanted the bastard to pop. Not sure if this is something that others experience, but sometimes I'll be so fixated on one move that fails I'll try to do it for a whole match. And lose. Badly.

Still, was great to be playing it again. I'd love to see this on every platform with rollback so it could get into everyone's hands, but hey.

One really funny moment including Vanessa's Intercept Stance and Kage's down attack. Never seen anything quite like that before.

Oh yeah I do that all the time. You make the right decision, the move doesn’t come out and you then keep trying to get the move out even though it’s not the right decision anymore. We kage players call it 9k+g syndrome.

Finally, been ready to buy this for months!

Mainly to support VF, but Kazuya and Heihachi looked bizarrely well integrated. Watching new trailer... now!

Edit: Holy shit, Jacky Paul. Also, Lili's Pai? Would have expected Xiaoyu.

I wouldn't expect to beat anyone here in a million years, but I'm well up for having my handle added to the list of interested players if anyone is still playing this! It's KlatrymadonAF.

I'm mostly just dabbling with Goh, practicing his simple combos and nasty fuck-off headbutt whilst waiting for the one or two matches per hour that come up. I don't really have a feel for what most of his 'tools' are for, but I like the amount of moves that get the opponent out of your face.

Not sure what your handle is on PSN, if you send it my way (or just post it here, actually) I'll add you and we can probably get some games in before my PSN subscription lapses and hopefully pull in a few of the others. I think Faded's on holiday so he should be around at some point too?

Okay, added!

Um, bad news though - my subscription expired on the first of the month. I don't play the PS5 much given how much you get from Game Pass, so the Series X has become my main machine and I didn't want to keep up a subscription I'm not using.

Maybe I can see if there's a super cheap way to hop on for a month or so later.
