They maybe secretly implemented the regional filter thing that a number of fans were clamouring for. As noted above it’s giving me green matches every few seconds. So much for a global community

There was only one session (soon after the update) where it wasn’t finding games, no idea what happened there.

Yeah. There's something wrong with the matchmaking for sure. I'm pretty sure it classes the people it finds as optimal matches and keeps on giving them to you. I also heard something about the servers all being very asia-centric.

Whatever it is, I'd like it fixed please. I mean, it's putting me off playing online and I'm an established fan, so joe mcrandom isn't going to be hanging around very long if his first match takes ten minutes to find.

Sega are surveying Virtua Fighter owners: get on it.

When asked what I'd like to see for the franchise I asked for Character Stories (an opening and ending at the very least), a return of quest mode from VF5 or 4 EVO, more emphasis on spacing, timing and counters as opposed to skirting players 10 yards across the floor for 60% braindead combos and guest characters from Shenmue and Yakuza. Ryo Hazuki and Ren Wuying vs Kiryu and Majima come on Sega. Easy money.

I haven't played as much VF as I would have liked recently, but I filled the questionnaire in with as much positivity as I could - VF6 would be great. Great shout on the Shenmue / Yakuza crossovers tho. Only block is Kiryu's rule of never hurting women.

I filled it in too - positive about the game, mentioned the excellent streaming fights in the menu, and let them know that the netcode and matchmaking times are inadequate for this project anywhere outside of Japan. Several times.

I didn't ask for guest characters (I'm sick of them), but I did ask for guest character style customization - Jacky Bryant Ichiban would be pretty cool, and who could resist Jeffry decked out as Big Bo from Binary Domain?

Yeah, I also liked the 'do you know what rollback netcode is?' question. They know, the buggers, they know!

And yeah, I also added a nugget about Evo's Quest mode. Just some singleplayer content with even some minor type of progression would make for good downtime. I did forget to add anything about a training mode with at least some sample combos. Those are always handy.

Wonder why I'm getting constantly smashed by this 26 Wolf...(that it keeps putting me against 4 times over) oh cus player is a 37 Grimslayer with some of their other characters putting them in top 200 in the world.

It's basically Virtua Smurfing now. Don't mind being beaten by visibly higher ranked players but getting totally schooled by players 3 or 4 ranks below because of this dumb system sucks

Yea, I can imagine that’s annoying.

I do prefer the idea that rank is tied to character though. In SFV I actually won’t play with a lot of characters because it basically puts me in at my main characters rank and I spend the whole session getting smashed because I’m still trying to learn.

TBH I think these online fighting ranking systems need an over haul.

I personally think they need to make losing have no consequence. The main reason people won’t play better opponents, rage quit, get frustrated by lag etc. is because there’s a consequence to your loss. If you take this away then there’s no reason for people not to play.

The way you progress should only be tied to your winning. So if you’re winning, you progress and if you’re losing, you stay where you are. You will still plateau at a certain level

Yeah. It's like Darwock mentioned earlier about wanting to save his high win ratio - it's a meaningless statistic (if you were playing HomeStay Akira, your win rate would be closer to 0% than 90% or whatever, since it doesn't account for opponent skill) but a lot of players would still want the false ego boost. Me included, and I know it's utterly meaningless.

TBH I personally don’t even consider that type of stuff.

My gripe is losing costing me levels and being demoted.

You run into someone who is way better than you AND the losing is costing you your rank levelling, then you don’t want to play that player. Same when it’s laggy, you lose points and it wasn’t even your fault! It all just makes you not want to play.

It works both ways too. I remember having a guy on my friends list on the 360. His comment on 360 became ‘VF online = Coward Army’.

This guy was really good (it’s why I added him as a friend) and based on his comment I imagine lot of people didn’t want to play him through fear of losing. This must have been really frustrating for him, not being able to play because as soon as his name popped up people were like ‘err, no thanks’ /quit

Frist thing I did was hide all the win/loss information on my matchup profile. Not even showing matches played. Makes such a difference as I play for the experience rather than anything else.

They half-assed that option though, all the information is still there on your profile - it just won’t be shown before the match. I regularly check opponents that have hidden stats (and yeah, usually they are a much higher ranked main on a second character).

Room matches are much more liberating than ranked precisely because it doesn’t matter if I lose every time, it’s not getting recorded anywhere - except maybe counted for the titles for losing 1000+ times. Unfortunately room matches are where all the lag is, so for smooth games I have to play ranked.

I got to something like 400+ room matches played in the first two weeks. I’m scraping under 150 with each character for ranked, because I can only manage a handful of games each night before I get tilted.

I genuinely don't mind losing - it's 50/50 every time you enter a match after all - but when you're getting blasted by high level players who are far better than the rank suggests, and they act like assholes too you just think fuck this. I ain't given you any more free wins. I played this one guy, Yakuza Ark, proper asshole Lau player. Tea bagged every round, zipped around like a lunatic. Refused the rematch. Game matches us up again and I know his tricks, beat him 3-1 and he DQ's. Happy to take his win but deny me mine? dickhead.  Reload the game, pick a colour that isn't green and get the SAME PLAYER AGAIN - ARE YOU FUCKING KIDDING ME VIRTUA FIGHTER NETCODE? Quit to dash as if I beat him he'll DQ anyway, then i get a message saying if I do that again i'll be penalized. Lol no played Streets of Rage 4 instead.

At higher levels this game has some crazy damage issues. That Wolf touched me once and it was bye 55% or so with nothing I could do about it. And don't get me started on this guy. That combo at 27 seconds hitting a grown man flat on his back 5 times for 128 DMG? Nobody stops and thinks 'this looks rediculous?'

Every time the combo meter turns green it can be tech rolled. I mean, sure, I'd have the hit height raised a little bit and it looks a little silly, but it doesn't bother me too much overall.

I used to love VF4 Evo, played it to death but one thing I've noticed from playing this is a lack of impact/sense of weight. Has this always been the case? It looks ridiculous at times, like they're Premier league players taking dives from being brushed by the softest of touches.

The update is out.

It’s all a bit underwhelming. Simultaneous matches in rooms does not work for normal match. So if you have a big room it will still only be one pair fighting at a time with everyone else forced to wait. It only kicks in with league or tournament matches. No reason not to use those modes by default though, it’s all still the same on a per match basis. In simultaneous game situations the other participants can’t choose which ongoing match is shown on screen.

Stage select on rematch just randomises the stage again if you are using random. If you pick one stage that will be the only one ever used.

Team battle seems good, once you play a round and lose you are flagged as a loser and are out of the running. Once everyone loses on your team you lose the match (even if players on the other side haven’t played yet). You could do a 1 vs many if you have a much stronger player in a room, if they get beaten even once they would lose the match. That’s nice (although could lead to boredom for players who don’t need to play).

A few new titles added referencing SEGA and VFDC.

Nothing else I can see, and no sign of new trophies which they said would be added..? The ‘preparing’ tile on the main menu still says ‘preparing’ too.

I’m gradually turning into a spectator, not played in over a week as I’m just too uptight about ranked matches. I want to get my 600 played and I’m only half way there (and not hit hunter rank yet).

Got a bit of renewed motivation for this, finally got Pai up to Hunter rank two nights ago, and since then I’ve gone something like 45 losses to 5 wins lol

They really shouldn’t have made level 21 the rank floor, as I am nowhere near good enough to play people who have made it out of hunter (around 23-26) - I only stand a chance against other people like me that have been dragged up to hunter by sheer number of matches played. Not many of those left. It’s like they don’t want anyone except veterans to enjoy the game.

So I guess I’m kind of playing for curiosity only now, and to get my 600 matches.

However I am still looking at examples of how to properly use my character and trying to do some of that stuff, pointless though it may be, and something has puzzled me.

Pai has a couple of ‘while standing’ moves, a simple kick that we talked about before, and a two hit punch (P+K,P). I’ve seen a bunch of people include the punch in a combo immediately after her 6K+G (the spinning jump kick thing) without actually crouching, which suggests they are buffering both the crouch and rise during the spin.

I cannot figure this out. When I try it I just get the normal standing P+K every time. If I wait for the crouch to visibly appear then I get the move I want, but that’s not what the decent players are doing. Any tips?

Not sure. I had a look, but couldn't see a way to buffer that in without a 2+P to force the crouch before the P+K, P. I can hit them with the WSP+K, P, but the counter turns green to show that it can be tech rolled.

Did have a look on youtube for videos where it might be in and that exact combo is missing. Roughly a minute in.

I'd really like to play this, but waiting five minutes for a red connection is soul destroying. I don't give a shit if they're much higher or lower rank than me, just hook me up with someone to fight dammit!

There’s a technique to get a ‘recognised’ crouch, which is double tapping df, df (or db, db)

So to do this combo you want to do df+k+g, f+k+g, df,df, neutral, p+k, p

I just tried it and it worked. Let me know how you get on.

It took me a few goes but yeah, it works this way so thanks! Pretty finicky timing on it. I’ll spend an hour or so drilling it along with the other combos I like to practice, then jump into an online session and no doubt fall back into using the usual standard moves that get me beaten instead.
