I missed most of it but nipped in at the end for some games with @Down by Law and @Faded. Was 2:15am or later by the time we wrapped up (because Faded's PS4 crashed) but worth it. I didn't want to miss another get together, even though it was way past my bedtime.

Had a quick training session with Jacky earlier after watching someone doing cool shit with him in the menu video stream. 3+P+K, P+G on hit just looks rad - shame I never landed it once! 😛

I endured something like 10-15 matches against an 8th kyu Akira who was spamming the same moves over and over, and yes… he beat me in nearly all of them - so I am clearly still not learning the lessons I should be. I was using Pai so not as familiar with her moves as with Lei. I did try to evade many times, but got consistently punched out of it - resorted to jumping back to get clear, which kept me alive most of the time (occasionally cost me a chunk of health in the process). However once I was out of range, whatever move I tried to go on offense with would still lose to his spam.

I always host 3 person rooms, so I got to watch a higher ranked Aoi and how they dealt with him - that player did a lot better than I did, as the moves they picked seemed to have the priority whereas everything I picked would still lose. They also managed to do a ton of ground/bounce damage when he wasn’t in a position to counter with spam. Yet they also lost more often than not by just getting chipped down.

It’d be nice to get some pointers here, again I don’t expect anyone to watch them all so an analysis of the difference between the 3rd or 4th fights (where I was completely broken) and the 5th (where I finally got the victory) would be awesome.

First fight - felt pretty sore at losing this one. I was trying to apply the tips I got last time about dealing with spammers.

2nd fight - knew exactly what he was going to do, tried to counter it and still lost:

3rd fight - oh FFS. Probably the worst of the ones I picked out.

4th fight. To quote that guy with the frizzy hair from Ghostbusters, “I’M GETTING A LITTLE TIRED OF THIS!”

5th fight. Finally a win, but he beat me with no damage as well. What was it that made the difference this time?

Edit -  link to this one won’t embed, I’ll put it in a follow up post

@DarwockI've watched most of your videos now, and I've never really seen you use any launchers or moves that lead into guaranteed damage through crumples, etc.

While I'm unfortunately not familiar with any of the characters you choose, there's a numbers game here - if he's having to hit you loads of times to win with these body checks, etc, and you're launching him for 40% damage every time you hit him, you need to land less initial hits than he does to win.

This Akira clearly doesn't exactly have a huge repertoire, but he does at least know how to use the block button. In the 3rd fight you're clearly tilted and eating obvious damage, probably trying to mash something out you hope has priority.

While it's impossible to replicate how another player fights, I've made a quick little video of an Akira recording where I just spam 3+K+P and low punches to show how I'd deal with it. I'm not a Pai player, but I noticed several instances in video 5 where you hit with 6K+G and didn't do any follow up. Against this player, landing that one move could have become an easy combo that would have dealt a good chunk of damage since I can guarantee he never tech rolls. (4K+G, PP4+PKK > Jumping Stomp)

Don't think you should never get hit by spam, either. Occasional moves are almost always going to come through if someones randomly spamming those moves unless you're a defensive God, since one hits low and the others hit mid. It's more about ensuring that your hits ultimately lead to way more damage than his do. I'll post again when my vid finally uploads.

My 2p

The guy was looping a low hitting attack into a mid attack into a low etc. The mid is low profiling him.

You started far too many sequences with a high attack, which most of the time sailed over his head as he was maintaining his low position. He broke so many of your sequences by mashing LP, you should have been using mids constantly to cover his low profile.

Both of the moves he was doing are easily side stepped. Couple of times you side stepped but all you got was P,P,P.....As @Kayin Amoh mentioned you've leaving far too much damage on the table. In a game with latency and spamming you need to be taking the guy for as much damage as you can get, some of your punishes were barely 30 points. Side stepping the shoulder into launcher could have netted you 70-80 damage each time he did it and you would have had him dead in 3 combos.

I don’t know Pai but again, like @Kayin Amoh says, Pai will have this stuff, so you need to know what it is.

Thanks chaps, guess I need to know my characters better in the first instance. I probably have a bit of a mashing problem too, as after the successful evades the high punches just came out - I didn’t want them. Many other times (I didn’t upload every fight) my successful evade would be followed by another sidestep that wasn’t intended and I lost the advantage, because I did too many inputs with no confidence that it would work.

Any PC owners who want to try VF5 eSports should head to the Teknoparrot discussion in the Retro folder…

Feels good playing as Lion again after all these years. I know he’s annoying as fuck, but I’ve always liked his move set.

Lei Fei, Pai and Shun giving me massive problems at the moment, especially Shun. Looks like an old man but fights with the energy of a four year old at a wedding. Guy spends mores time sliding on his knees, on his back or upside down than on two feet. Lei Fei and Pai are just so bloody fast with constant high low high combos, crazy tricky to determine the block game. Sidesteps don't really help as the combos track. Just an all around bloody nightmare. Fought a 33 Shun last night and got triple perfected. Just couldn't get anything to land before he did. Proper demoralizing . Then fought a conveyor belt of four Jacky's in a row and got gazumped by the output damage of the fucking flip kick. Went down a rank to 27.  🥴

The 'fast but weak' staple that has been applied to fighting games since forever does not apply to VF. A wrong read again Lei Fei and you might as well put the kettle on

BACK ON IT TONIGHT ! 😅

Ggs to kayin just now. A very close ft10 followed by a bit of character select rambling.

Going to sit down and learn myself a sub character at some point soon. Goh or Lau. Probably Lau as he seems so underrepresented for an OG.

Yep, fun times! Definitely got aspects of my game to work on, but Vanessa's coming along decently.

I wouldn't mind learning a sub character, but I'm not quite where I want to be with Van yet even though she's improving, so something for the future.

Got the new patch installed, and so far every ranked match it has found for me has been listed as a red connection. Before today, every single match was a green connection. So either they fixed the displayed icon to be more accurate, or the connection quality matchmaking has been broken.

I don’t know how bad the actual connections are as I haven’t accepted any of them.

edit - by the end of the session, I had found and played 2 green bar matches, 1 orange bar, and 1 red that I accepted by mistake. The red bar match was actually awful. I rejected something like 15-20 other red bar matches. It’s never been like this before.

How’s it been for everyone else? I was hoping there would be enough feedback for Sega to quickly fix the (presumed) error, but when I looked on vf.com for comments there’s just a few people saying it’s much better now 😕

Wow, what have they done to this version!?

Room Match has a soft lock in it where if you and a player ‘ok’ up and a 3rd player leaves at the same time, the match doesn’t start and you’re stuck. Only way out is to reset the game.

Does a win-streak carry on if you change character?

Can answer this now, it does.

The inevitable had happened and I was caring too much about stats to feel comfortable playing, so I started again with my alt account in a bid to have a ‘no pressure’ game that I could just enjoy (and get some training with). I used Pai up to 1st kyu with a 14-win streak against other kyu levels, then switched to Lei and tried to do the same before he got auto-bumped up to a higher rank. The win-streak was reset, but I lost my second match anyway. I struggled more with Lei than I did with Pai, which was an eye-opener.

Anyway I just went back to Pai and carried on, first win said it was a 15-win streak so it does save it per character.

Obviously now I have this ridiculous 92%-ish win ratio, that I’ve stupidly started getting protective of that as well. There is really no escape. Maybe my original account can revert to being the no pressure one, since I already lost loads with that.

It’s still taking ages to get a green-bar match, but there were quite a few reds coming. I guess this is not much different than before except previously everything looked green so I didn’t reject any - thus it seemed like there were more games available.

I have no idea what my stats are, as I have them switched off. You should too if it affects you.

It’s hard to get too caught in in stats when I literally have regular unplayable games due to lag. Sooner just turn them off and get on with playing.

I’d personally consider Pai more straight forward to use than Lei.

While I’m no expert with either character I think Lei looks super setup/situational heavy, which requires a lot of understanding to make effective. His stances, what you can do with them and how you move through them are fairly essential requirements I’d say. I think Lei looks super cool but I don’t feel I have the time to get into him.
