Congrats! I can’t pluck up the courage to play more than 3 or 4 ranked matches in a session, I spent most of the time getting my arse kicked in rooms over and over (my thought process being, if I can’t learn to beat the same person with many chances to do so I stand no chance in a one off).

This is a bit premature as I don’t have the video ready, but I came up against one of those spammy Kage players last night that I would like to get some opinions on. Even with a solid connection and the time I spent practicing against just that type of thing, I barely scraped through. I’ll add a video link later.

Also there was a Goh that beat me 10 rounds straight, who I simply could not block any of his hits. It was fairly ridiculous how I would just eat string after string (and then get thrown for good measure). I reckon I was trying to do the lazy tech thing obsessively because I was very paranoid about his throws, and messing it up somehow. If I push the punch button too soon in a lazy tech will it actually fail to block at all? That’s all I can think of.

Here’s the Kage match. It’s obvious what he was doing, and I clocked it right away, and yet I still continued to take massive damage from his cheap tactics to the point where I only survived by the skin of my teeth. All those hits I took were when I was trying to counter, or trying to dodge, and failing. He mixed it up just enough that I couldn’t simply wait for a clear opportunity (or at least, I didn’t feel like I could). I don’t believe lag was a factor, as my controls felt responsive. I just got lucky basically.

Can anyone suggest what I should have done differently to not let him get away with as much as he did?

Personally I would do what you did in the 3rd round - back dash to make space, then keep them at distance with push kicks leading into combos.

A player like that doesn't know the block button exists, and once you were in you landed all your strings no problems.

Once you knocked him down with a bit of health left at 1:29 before the final exchange a jumping attack would've finished him off as he didn't attempt any quick rises

Regarding counters just make sure you're throwing out the right one. Back at launch I ate so many mid kicks from @Kayin Amoh's Vanessa ,because I was trying to high counter her combo that ends in a thrusting side kick because I was trying to counter high and it's actually a mid.

Things like that you only learn by losing. Or training mode dummies hehe

I was playing a chap named Shensun from the Shenmue Dojo forums last night who is a 27 warrior Akira, who plays the character in a completely different way that I do with a very strong throw game and I lost 8 in a row before I managed to figure out their style and hold my own against them. He made a bit of a mockery out of my Brad and it was only the long swaying strings that managed to get him repeatedly .

It's one thing I really love about VF is you can have two players use the same character with wildly different playstyles and approaches to the game

For the case of this player you probably should have used 2P to break his elbow mash and instantly followed up with with a combo starting mid.

Getting a counter hit 2P will put you at about +5 (I think) and like @Down by Law says the guy has no idea about block so your combo is gonna land. Once you’re on the offensive you can just keep hitting him.

I don’t know Lei’s moveset but I think you needed to do more mids too. There were a few times where you went to a high attack and the guy was mashing 2P and you lost so had to go on the defensive. If you’d used a mid, you would have covered both high and low mashing. TBH if I play someone like this I only use mid starting attacks.

I do love me some repeated elbow spam.  😍
Honestly though there’s nothing cheap there, if anything he’s doing himself a disservice. if he’d done elbow > 33p you’d have been dead a few times over.

I wouldn’t bother with any fanciness. If your opponent is gonna spam the same move over and over just block and smash the next one with whatever move the connection/your reactions will allow.  If he’s not gonna block I’d just do elbow spam myself for the lols

Always remember hearing comments the VF didn’t have the ‘exciting flashy moves’ of other games but as Desk points out, there’s nothing that looks more like an actual martial arts movie then this game!

Ok I checked before bed and I was 40th in Europe. Again I think it’s meaningless.

HOWEVER I am #2 Kage in Europe and you bet your sweet arse I am gonna try and hit number 1 just so I can screen shot that shit.*

*it’s still meaningless. Ryan Hart’s existence makes the very idea of me claiming that as a real thing laughable.

I don't know if they stealth improved the netcode, I was playing a chap from the Shenmue forums last night from Canada and apart from a few hitches where it hangs for a second or so it was mostly solid.

I am about 30 matches off the 1200 matches trophy already which i thought would take months. It's really addictive. I mean I played Final Showdown a lot vs the CPU but online is a whole other level. It does help there's no 15 second long super moves you have to watch for the 500th time.

That’s exactly what I was thinking after the spectacle of round 2 of this mirror match.

(maybe a Jackie Chan movie?)

edit - I’m trying to build up my Pai experience, hoping that using a character I don’t know very well will help strengthen my defensive game. I set up a room with 3 players and loser stays on, thinking I’d get lots of experience as everyone would kick my ass. It didn’t work out that way, as there were two consecutive players who took an absolute heroic level of punishment and didn’t throw in the towel for 15+ matches each despite losing every one. I can only hope they were training themselves up and didn’t get too frustrated by the experience - I wish I could be that neutral about it. It was a little frustrating just to watch as one of them was a Taka who didn’t do any down attacks, and the other a Shun who didn’t drink.

I’m generally very accommodating of n00bs by working on my defence and practicing techniques for situational scenarios. It also helps you learn to spot habits, which will give you a potential opening you need.

I remember why I stopped playing this game last time now though. If the lag is sufficient the match is a write off and it becomes a bit of a crapshoot who’s going to win.

I played a level 23 Akira and lost 3 rounds straight because I couldn’t side step for shit or punish anything when he was negative.

Conversely I played a level 27 Lei who pretty much killed himself constantly attempting his charging punch. In this fight lag was okay so I was able to side step it pretty much every time and punish him. I kept thinking ‘why does he keep doing this?’ I now suspect it’s because he gets so much success from it due to latency.

First thing I’ve started doing at the beginning of a round now is back right off and press block to see how long it takes my character to do it. In the heat of battle it can be hard to notice but just sitting doing nothing, pressing the button and watching can be a real indicator. Sometimes the delay can be scary, like how am I supposed to play when it takes over half a second to block. It’s really highlighted to me the importance of roll back net code.

Is that something to do with the tile on the main menu that just says ‘preparing’?

Dunno, could be - it did seem like they just managed to squeak this game out the door in time for the anniversary deadline, so there could be stuff still to come. Or maybe it's for watching/storing official online tournaments that they're holding.

1 hour and 23 minutes into the following video shows the 'season 0' thing, which seems to be an online tournament, and a few minutes after that they show off a snazzy Tshirt that I kinda want. (1:26:40)

I played some of this on launch and really enjoyed it.

Now I'm treated to crouching punch spam and lag.

Wtf has happened to the game, I can see my time being spent learning to counter or block punch spamming.

Which to me is not going to be the fun the game was intended to be.

When people don’t know what they’re doing, they resort to the lowest common denominator, which in this game is low punch spam.

It’s not the threat people think it is though. Any decent speed mid will beat it out when you have the timing down.

Jean Kujo is the first character I’ve been disappointed with for just being generic in every way. Every character I’ve found some interest in for various reasons but him, there’s just literally nothing I find interesting.

Unfortunately I’m not really getting the time to play this and end up theory fighting as opposed to actual fighting (looking at frame data / moves and planning move sequences) It’s always the case too that my theories go straight out of the window as soon as I do get a chance online and I resort to the same old mash.

The game really needs a black list. I had a couple of super laggy matches yesterday. One person it matched against 5 times! I started quitting as soon as I saw the name but I was still getting penalised for ‘quitting’ the match even though it hadn’t even started. All I was thinking was ‘Give me the option to play the guy or not!’ It’s stupid that this isn’t an option.

You know when it says 'opponent found' and you get the green signal icon indicating a good connection? I've never had it appear as anything other than green but I can tell you , especially in the daytime, that 90% of those matches will be fucking horendous.

9-10pm on the other hand? Terrific
