I was contacted by EA to complete a BF2042 survey. Took forever to do and as I appear to be the only person alive that enjoys the game I’m probably not the ideal candidate to provide them with information.

I’m on PS5 with cross play turned off so perhaps that has some bearing on my enjoyment of the game.

S'alright man, I'm still with you. Still having a riot, whilst fully accepting it's not a great Battlefield game and entirely understanding (for the most part) everyone's complaints. The addition of Rush 2042 is fantastic (they should put San Francisco Rush 2049 in the game as well), although I am largely sticking to Conquest and a smattering of Portal.

To get the maximum enjoyment out of 2042, you definitely have to game the system somewhat. This isn't great, but at the same time I'm 39, have 2 kids and limited time to play. If it means I have to turn crossplay off, avoid Breakthrough and Hazard Zone like the plague, pack Casper and an SMG to give myself an edge in combat, so be it.

2042 is the first Battlefield to not feature a story driven campaign since 2008. It not having a campaign is more of a surprise than EA making more BF games with campaigns at this point.

I'm excited by other studios getting involved, they've just as much chance of delivering something good at this point. DICE have spent 3 games getting this wrong now (4, if we count the debacle that was BF4's launch and the subsequent fracturing of the community through over aggressive expansion plans).

I feel the problem is all the campaigns have been terrible with the exception of BC1 and 2. I would be concerned if the single player element is left to DICE although Zampella being in charge gives me hope - I've always enjoyed CoD's single player campaigns whilst hating the multiplayer (it's just not my kind of game).

I would hope we see a Forza Horizon/Motorsport type deal. Everyone knows Horizon is the single player experience and Motorsport is the multiplayer component and never the twain shall meet. An actual annual Battlefield game really would put the franchise beyond redemption.

Jumped on this last night as I still have 2 hours left on trial.

Played the portal 2042 rush mode.

32 players. It was a fucking joy. Portal is the only saving grace. I'm actually tempted to just buy it now.

Does the digital Xbox One give you access to the Xbox Series games?

I originally bought the £63 series version but I read somewhere that supposedly the Xbox one version gives you an upgrade. It's all very confusing. Why even have the more expensive version?

There are two versions, one for just one X and one with the upgrade to series. The upgrade is about a tenner more expensive.

This was from before release, so there'll be similar icons on the store. Or should be anyway.

There are two versions. The Xbox One version which gives you smaller sections of the large maps and 64 players max. The Series S | X version is the large maps and 128 players. There is no smart delivery option, so if you play the Xbox One version on next gen, it will be in effect playing an Xbox One game.

Aye, but I'm reading that the Xbox one version gives you a free upgrade anyway. But never heard of.anyone doing it.

If so then why are they selling a £63 series X version?

Edit - reading more articles EA did confirm the last gen digital versions DID have a free upgrade.

But IGN said they are not now.

I swear to God that guy has DICE write the gamecode directly onto his brain. I’ve watched a few of his videos over the years and I simply can’t figure out how he’s that insanely accurate and is able to seemingly spot players instantly. It just doesn’t seem possible. It’s very impressive but also kind of makes me feel ill at the same time.

Such an inconsistent game this. Just had two really good and fun games of 128 Conquest, and one of them on one of my least favorite maps, the snow one.

Managed to sidestep an charging small tank, whatever the name is, the level 50 unlock. Turned 180 and blew three people to pieces. Only to seconds later snipe a guy in a jeep trying to run me over with a rocket and then having the empty jeep fly by me with inches to spare.

Also had some really good infantry fights around the middle points and on the oil rig.

But I swear next time I will be killed by PC snipers and totally silent vehicles over and over again.

We’ve started playing the XB1 version because you can’t turn off cross play on the Series version.

The time we tried blocking it at a system level it was just dumping us into games that were 99% bots.

Does the physical Series version, which is the one I have, give access to the Xbox One version?

I think it will work if you put it in an XB1, but putting it in a series x will give you the series version

I'm all for crossplay as a thing but why on Earth developers think its a good idea to implement in an FPS is beyond me.

You get good full server numbers on PlayStation and it's just a single switch in the options. If it's buried that deeply on Series that's a shame and surely limits the game's ongoing appeal on those systems.

What a shame :(

Where is this option anyway please?

No fucking wonder turning off cross play breaks the game for Xbox. It's buried 6 levels deep in the system settings. Most fuckers won't even know it's there.

Also fun fact. Halo totally ignores it. You still get matched to PC players even with that turned off.

The Series cross play is all Microsoft and their idiot design. It ruined Warzone. I uninstalled my trial for space, but I saw a video yesterday that said they're doing a limited time 64 player mode on PC and current gen? Sounds like back tracking without saying they fucked up.

Way back when in Battlefield 2 you had the option off the bat to select 32 player servers rather than 64. A feature that has been dropped over time and never restored for some reason.

For me the historical sweet spot has always been 32 on the smaller 360/PS3 generation maps (although I know those games were 24 players, I still think you could up it to 32 and get good games going regardless)

Ah yeah.

I did have to enable it to make roblox (🤮) work and fortnite I think.

Thanks

I don't think it is. I've seen some devs say it's Microsoft policy, but if that is the case, why can you turn off cross play in Modern Warfare, Black Ops, Apex Legends, Vanguard, PUBG and probably others.

Something weird going on with it, but regardless it's fucking shit. When SONY bring out their competitor to gamepass, if it's semi decent I might end up swapping. I don't want to play against PC players and their rampant cheating (I know it's not everyone, but considering in Warzone you see them daily and in Halo you're starting to see them now too).

Even if there isn't cheating, a decent PC player is going to have the edge on a pad player of the same skill. It's just the nature of the control system.

If you're playing a multiplayer game the difference maker should be down to skill, not an unlevel playing field.

The 128 player conquest maps have been clearly labelled in game as 'Large Conquest' from the start. Presumably 'Conquest' always was going to arrive at some stage.
