Insightful thread:

He's the head of the localisation team that's been killing it since Zero. Best localisation team in the business imho. Here he explains why the lip syncing is what it is in Lost Judgeyment

I read that as not having enough time. Trade off between a global launch and delaying the Western release.

Did you read the entire thread? Basically, yes the choice was between delaying the western version or leaving it as is while launching simultaneously everywhere for the first time ever in the Yakuza series. The positive news is that Scott says that this is a learning process - this is the first time for RGG studios and his team doing it like this. And that also on the Japanese side they're willing to make it work so that next time they can take lip syncing into account while launching simultaneously.  :)

Which is excellent news for us. Remember when Sega and RGG was convinced that Yakuza was just too Japanese and not worth bothering with bringing it here? We would never be able to play something so Japanese, let alone 80s Japan which might as well be a different planet for us? How far we've come :D

I did but didn't understand the term "sim ship". I now realise that's short for simultaneous shipment and not some form of lip-syncing technique.

Tbh, it took me a few seconds too. It sounds like some pervert online otaku scene or something. But no, it simultaneous shipping.

I couldn't imagine playing one of these games with an English dub. The Japanese voiceover is an absolutely integral part of the experience.

I wouldn't even try to play with english voiceovers.

The Yakuza games have the best voice-acting in pretty much any game ever as far as I'm concerned, and - as you say - integral to the thing!

To be clear, I'm also a subtitles kinda guy :) I'm Dutch, it's part of our identity. Everything in its original language and we read the subs. But I don't look down on anyone for preferring dubs or anything, that's just a personal preference. And yes, the acting and voice acting in Yakuza is the easily the best in videogames.

3 days early access

Bastards! Absolute utter bastards  I always buy the normal edition of everything. Zero interest in DLC, to me it's superfluous by definition as a game has to be playable without it. And besides, fuck spending extra for an extra costume or whatever. But three days early access??? To the latest entry in my most favourite game series ever????

Damn them!

RGG actually have a habit of releasing DLC that makes their games worse   Item packs that unbalance the game, that kind of thing. The fact that the Deluxe edition includes things called "Quick Start Support Pack" and "Detective Essentials Pack" makes me think they've done it again.

The Ultimate Edition does appear to include some sort of story expansion but if that turns out to be any good it's probably worth just buying it separately and avoiding all the other game-breaking tat.

Well if it allows you to skip the tailing suspects or searching for clues sections, then money well spent - because they really weren't very good in the original.

I didn't mind them at all  Maybe they're better in Japanese?

For me, they'd only be improved if they were completely absent. Loved Judgment to bits, but the tailing sections were a bore.

Chase sequences are just fine, though.

Judgment's tailing missions were particularly egregious given the small Kamurocho map. One of the final ones was infuriatingly tedious due to the labyrinthine, poorly optimised route the suspect took, making it about five times longer than it should ever have taken. Some atrocious padding which started to creep into later Yakuza's and then kicked into a higher gear here.
