Just stopped myself hitting the buy button for the cheap Argentinian version of Elden Ring - I'm sure it will be great and feature in GotY lists but I bounced fast off the dark souls games before and didn't even manage to finish the 5 min trailer they put out the other day for this on YouTube.

The same base game that if it launched a year ago on PS4 would have cost you no more than 40 pounds. So if people are happy to buy these games for 70 quid, what's to stop the next COD game being released at £100 now? Nothing at all. They have proven that people will buy returnal for 70 quid so why not keep going up and up. 5 years ago £70 would get you a copy of a game, a tin box, some dlc pass and a statue. Now your happy to pay that for basically a disc that sets off a download for a patch.

 

How much do other things cost to make and sell? Do you think a £30,000 golf R car costs that much to make or is it because people have accepted that is what it is worth? Same with your new iPhone 12 xr super duper XXL cheeseburger edition. How much does that actually cost to make and how much have the public accepted to pay for it? Last I saw it was £1200? So in 2021 we deem an iphone to be of the same value as a top spec gaming pc a few year ago or a PS4 pro with a beast TV 3 years ago?

 

Gaming is in a very very fragile time at this moment and is running the risk of isolating a huge proportion of the people who buy their games.

 

As I say, it's your seventy quid to spend on whatever you want, but I will never ever spend 70 quid on a bog standard edition of any game, no matter what console it is on.

Its a difficult one. I call it the "Stella effect" of something being reassuringly expensive!

 

However do the price of games really reflect the effort put into making them? I mean are in a race to the bottom on de-valuing the whole gaming market by getting things for "free" so people's expectations are that games should be cheap or free? To some degree GamePass and things like Epic store giving games away has devalued gaming making them seem almost worthless in terms of monetary value.

 

Its a changing world out there for sure. I think Sony's legacy model will ultimately die out and everything will be on services so the point of how much games cost will move to become how much time do I have and where do I spend that time as in the end that is something you can never earn or get back.

 

So I guess the question here should be. At what point do you write a game off rather than giving it a fair try? 

 

Anyway. As much as I have enjoyed elements of the demo of CyberPunk 2077 I won't be picking it up. Even at £20. I think the main issue with it is that I don't enjoy GTA games and this feels like a GTA game set in a future city. It also seems to have a lot of complexity in it which makes it feel to much like work and not play. I guess I'm old school really in that I enjoy a good story and some gaming elements added to make it engaging and interactive. But this it makes me feel miserable after playing it!  No other way of describing it. I see a world depicted of what things may become at some point. And I don't like it. I don't find it fun moving through city just killing for money / greed / personal gain. Rather be in a happy fantasy place myself. Which is why I guess I *did* enjoy say Ghosts Of Tsushima - there was a reason behind the aggression and violence. Defending things. Anyway waffling...

I did this with the PS3 and the PS4, and also the XB1.

 

I borrowed a PS4 to platinum Bloodborne with (and to also attempt to play and like TLoU:Remastered), although other than that I don't feel like I've missed out on much.

If you couldn't even make it through a trailer, it's hard to see that you would get value from buying it. 

 

Of course, this forum's love affair with all things From Software means there will be about 20 threads talking about the game on release day, so that's going to test your resolve. But perhaps just read any spoiler thread that crops up, that way you don't feel like you are missing out so much

Nope, are you fuck. Oooh it’s Demons Souls with a slightly wider map. It’s still gonna have all the shit you didn’t enjoy about every other Souls game.

I don’t know; depending on what they disliked I’d recommend Sekiro or even Bloodborne to someone who didn’t like Souls. Also I’m the guy who noped out of DS1 but didn’t mind any of the games that followed.

 

I think Elden Ring could win some new fans but it depends on whether or not the new elements are enough to change the experience. Bloodborne was transformative for me just by having a better dodge and a more intuitive counter and a non-medieval setting.

I bought a £40 Ps5 rugby game the other day despite all evidence of history clearly setting out that rugby will never be any good as a computer game (even you Jonah Lomu). This will be the one, this will be the one that can transform, Madden-style, a complex sport with every single rule, tactic, play, position and player accurately represented and fun to play. Spoiler, it wasn’t any good.

I think I’ve ridden through the desire to get the new Pokemon Arceus. It’s everything I hate, or go overboard with until I hate it. Collecting, crafting, wandering about without a clear goal. But maybe this would be the one! Nah. 

 

Same with Elden Ring. I sucked at the Souls games and didn’t have the patience for it. I’m sure I could learn to love it but I don’t have that kind of time. Now with this new open world one it sounds like I’ll be shit at it and lost. But maybe this would be the one…

It does sometimes work though! Breath of the Wild is my major example of that. Which makes a degree of sense given a fair few Zelda fans dislike it; if you don't enjoy a series, but a new entry does things that old fans dislike, there's likely something different about it and so it may appeal more to you!

I hate my PS5, I don't like driving sims any more, I think £60-70 for a title is taking the piss.

I'm about 50 hours into Cyberpunk on the PC. I have a monster PC playing it with all the bells and whistles on. I love it, but I'm never going to play it again. I also don't like playing FPS'es on a pad. 

 

I managed about a week of it being on sale on the PS5 before I bought it.

No, it's why I created this thread, just the act of typing out the daftness of me hitting buy on these games is stopping me from repeating past mistakes.

 

This isn't old man shouting at clouds, aren't games rubbish nowadays, Geoff Crammonds Grand Prix looked better than GT 7 etc, it's me coming to terms with how my gaming tastes have changed.

 

I'm still pretty immune to this logic on Nintendo games though.

This thread is good timing for me, with Elden Ring getting such acclaim.

 

The only other game in the same ilk that I have played in Bloodborne.  Every time I put it on, I rage quit soon afterwards.  Never made much progress, and didn't like the aesthetic at all.

 

Certainly Elden Ring looks much nicer, but I am sure that I won't enjoy the gameplay.  However, I do want to see what all the fuss is about.

 

I'll wait for a price drop at the very least.

I crumbled on elden ring .

I knew it wasn't for me but it looked so lush .

 

Played for about an hour and got Microsoft to refund thankfully 

 

I can accept the difficulty aspect but choppy frame rates and the pop up on series X was off-putting
