I know loads of people who don't think any game ever made is worth £70. None of them has ever loved a game. But they do love other things, and they pay silly money for them. Money that I never would. Doesn't mean a thing really, apart from to see what people value in their lives. I'd pay well over seventy quid for a game if it could do to me what Ocarina did to me all those years ago. I mean, nothing ever will do that again, because time. But man, would I pay good money for that feeling again for a few weeks? Would I ever. Would would would.

I bought all the original Soulsborne games in the order they where released originally, even Demons Souls on PS3 American import. 

 

I was shit at all of them, up to and including Bloodborne, and shelved the fucking lot and didn't clearly learn my lesson. Determined to understand what all the fuss was about, I returned to Bloodborne and watched and read up on it, and finally learned how to approach and play them. 

 

Now they are the greatest games ever made and every other action adventure game release just pales into insignificance with its constant handholding, pointless cutscenes and dialogue trees, and maps! (pah!) 

 

When I originally witness Returnal on one of those Playstation reveal video/show thingies, I didn't think it looked anything either interesting or special. 

 

Clearly by the jizzing of pants in the official thread, clearly Sony's reels undersold this somewhat. However at £70 I'm not jumping in yet, if it was £45 or £50 I'd be driving right now to the nearest shop to pick it up for tonight.

I think when you write in the OP about "spending a lot of money" on a game and relate it directly to Returnal you're sort of asking people to talk about the cost of buying Returnal, amongst other things.

Yes, I completely agree with that. Don't just buy shit you don't really want. But the posts I've responded to aren't about that. They're about no game being worth seventy quid. Like Gotters says, the forum is rife with them - and most are 'I have Game Pass, people who buy games for big dollars are suckers!' kind of posts. Like the ones in here. Maybe the OP should have focussed more generally on people buying shit for the sake of having shit, or in order to have shit to do on the other shit they bought regardless of how good that shit is. But it wound up being almost the opposite.

and in the U.K. it’s a holiday weekend. I’d be shit at returnal, but like GOT I’d probably get sucked into the forum launch best game ever hype if I wasn’t careful. At £20, I’d bite now. At £40, I’d buy it tomorrow morning. At £70, I’m hoping it’s enough to stop me (not trusting Sony with card details helps)

From reading about Returnal, I reckon the shininess will wear off quite quickly if the save issue isn't addressed and patched somehow. Its going to start filling up the shelves of CEX quite fast in the next 5 days or so, and then the RRP will tank hard.

I decided there was no point buying Returnal because it’ll be on PS+ soon enough and Resi 8 is out next week, and I’m still ploughing through Ghost of Tsushima which’ll easily take all of next week, even if I don’t play Apex and Titanfall for an hour or so every day. So anyway I bought Returnal, seems alright.

Getting back on topic, an example from today.

 

My first RTS was Command & Conquer and I loved - and completed! - it. Back then they were simple; build an army and rush off. There wasn't really much strategy involved but it was accessible and not too taxing. Fast-forward to now and you have abilities on individual units that need micromanaging, much more tactical maps, a better disguise of the rock:paper:scissors and it's all too much. I've had Dawn of War 2 and both Company of Heroes games for years and still haven't gotten very far (I dip in and out of them very, very rarely).

Yet I absolutely love the setup for Iron Harvest, the pseudo WWI with mechs, but I know I'd never get good and it would be a frustrating experience. If it were a TBS I'd be all over it, but even though I know I just wouldn't really appreciate it, I do still want it. Luckily there is a free weekend on Steam so I've just had a little play and it seems fine and I'll not get it, but yeah, there is a little urge to.

 

Perhaps I'll just watch a playthrough to satisfy my appreciation of the setting

Finally, something on topic but it was basically what I was going to say  

 

There are some games that don’t sit right with me or I enjoy but don’t have the patience for. I love the idea of a strategy game, but I hit a wall and I just can’t be fucked. But... maybe this one will be the one!

 

I have to work hard to not buy into the new release hype when everyone is talking about it. Following the thread in here is part of the experience, and there is a buy or bail point when reading it.

 

I made it through Monster Hunter Rise with 50 quid still in my pocket. I don’t like crafting, or having patience when attacking and I’ve not got on with previous versions or demos. But everyone is having fun and saying it eventually clicks. 
 

Money isn’t so much the issue with me, but giving something a go that you probably may not like? ...it’s daft to pay full whack. On a more positive note, gave Hades a go on sale, and I loved it despite not being my cup of tea.

So Kingdom Hearts 3 was on sale and despite the shitty combat I did enjoy seeing digital versions of various movies back in the day. I had some very fond memories of the Tron levels in 2 for instance.

 

Why did I buy this? I mena the combat is the same mashy thing although the camera is easier to control. And I love the look of the game.

 

But the writing. The writing is the pits. It's bad. Not so bad it's good but just bad. With some actors just phoning it in. Some of the villains come across well but the heros are just the worst. It's been an age since I've ever cringed so hard playing a game.

 

The worst bit is I'm three hours in and I just know I'm going to feel the need to push through to see if it gets better.

Aside from new Destiny content I’m doing fairly well at resisting impulse spends at the moment. Also it helps that there’s a ton of things I’m keen to complete in that Destiny content - old triumphs, new triumphs, seasonal artefact upgrades…

 

The next new release I’m actually interested in is Neo TWEWY, but that’s still months away, and there will be plenty of sales between now and then… 😬

I hate the codies F1 games for their lack of new ideas and very little work on improving the driving model over the past ten years. I should not buy the new one as I buy them and give up quickly when I get bored of the same old tired driving model.

 

But the adaptive triggers on PS5 could make it fun just to play casual on a pad instead of my wheel...
