Stay Strong, Don't Buy It, You Won't Enjoy It

Whilst I do sometimes buy games on day one, I am somewhat strict about sticking to what I know I’ll like. The only “new” things I bought last year were FFVIIR, P5 Royal, Yakuza: LaD and the last bunch of Destiny 2 content. That doesn’t mean I won’t try brand new original games, but they’re still (broadly) things that I’m confident I’ll enjoy, such as Katana Zero or Celeste. I will move out of my comfort zone on occasion, but it’s usually when something’s on sale and/or it’s way after the fact.

(Also, this forum helps a lot - a number of members have interests that kind of overlap with my own, and so buying into selective hype can sometimes work ;) )

Game Pass has made me reluctant to buy anything I'm even slightly uncertain about, because I've already got a massive virtual backlog of stuff I can try out if I fancy something a bit different.

So the stuff I do buy tends to be stuff I'm 100% certain I'm going to enjoy, and want to play immediately. I've bought Yakuza Like A Dragon, Hitman 3 and Monster Hunter Rise on release without hesitation. I wouldn't have done that though without prior experience of those game series.

No doubt that Game Pass has significantly changed my game-buying habits. I'm sitting here looking at all the PS5 owners queueing up to pay seventy quid for Returnal and thinking, you're having a fucking laugh.

The main problem with Returnal is it's the next "next gen" PS5 title. And despite knowing that

1. I hate rogue-like

2. I hate horror games

3. I hate games with massive times between save points

4. Am I heck paying £70 for a game.

There's still that underlying "ooh, shiny new game to play on new console". Glad I'm busy this weekend or I'd have probably folded.

It's a lot of money for sure, but by all accounts it's a lovely game and people want to play on their new shiny consoles. I remember early 360 owners rushing out and buying The Outfit - now they were having a laugh.

I've always been tempted by the Souls games but I just know I'll be terrible at them.

Three other one is probably Football Manager. I used to play it a lot in the CM days but I just know I won't have time for it. I actually bought it last year on Stadia and guess what? Hardly played it.

I find this so strange. Like, I don't buy football games because I'm not into football, for example.

Also, if - in the case of Returnal - if you've decided you "hate" the broad categories that the game is related already, it's not really giving the game a chance to stand on it's own merits... but not just Returnal, any game.

To reflect, I can love a good narrative walking simulator, but I absolutely hate the complete nonsense that is the "golden child" of the genre, which is What Remains of Edith Finch. In my opinion it's a janky mess dictating the stupidest tale imaginable with little emotional resonance... but I had to make sure of this opinion and played through it to completion three times as I felt I was missing out. It was on Gamepass, takes only 90 mins to finish to that was play through no. 3. Still total crap. See also - Life is Strange.

Having gamepass has changed my buying habits for games.

There's franchises I will buy day one without hesitation (Resident Evil, GTA, Battlefield for starters) and I can get these games with a heavy discount via eneba or even get them for free using MS rewards. These are all third party games that I will always buy on series x.

I refuse to pay £70 for any Sony first party exclusive. This pricing has soured me on them. And because I have so much to play via gamepass (and a ton of first party MS games to come) then it's frankly stupid for me to fall for Sonys bullshit. They can get fucked. I will buy their exclusives second hand or when they get to £50 or lower.

This is the main reason I'm less than thrilled with my PS5. Buyers remorse because I only play GT Sport on it and I need to justify having that racing sim rig that my other half hates.

Lend it me so I can play Returnal. I'm sure the postage won't be much...

Mass effect trilogy is £60 and out in 2 weeks.

Imagine…. Your 19 hours into the first game determined to finish a proper play through with side quests but the gameplay really feels like it’s from another time in history, the animation looks way worse than you remember it. That cool bit inst so cool anymore and wow you didn’t realise that bit was so bad. You still love Mass Effect, look you spent £60 to prove it. Best just take a break and buy something new and then….never go back to it.

If you simply sold it, you can then be rid of it and no longer have to post about how much you hate it at every opportunity.

It's a fucking topic talking about buying trends and I stated what I'm doing.

I don't hate the thing, it has a lot of issues that I'm not fond of though, I hate Sonys pricing of games. If you read these other threads where I hate on it so much I have stated it will come good. But I'm not willing to pay £70. Its another reason I'm not exactly thrilled with the console.

I won't mention the gaming box again. :)

I follow a very simple rule; if I have to think about whether I want something or not then I don't want it. If I want something enough I'll have preordered it or bought it as soon as I could. You just have to be honest with yourself. Getting caught up in hype is very real, as is FOMO, but if you take a sec to think about it you'll save yourself more in the end.

Sound advice.  In my case more applicable to Boardgames, particularly on KS, since I've more or less stopped buying video games.  It's basically equivalent to putting a KS project on watch, and then backing it later (you get a reminder 48 hours to go) -  if you really want it, go for it and don't waste any time on watching people making paid promos & suchlike, just buy / pre-order / back.

Please don't criticise his company too much. It hurts him.

See, playing through a game three times - a narrative-led game that has no changes throughout, no less - I find exceptionally odd. What a complete waste of your time (however short it was). Just play something else, if you don't get what people like about it, so what? Just move on.

I agree that Life is Strange was rubbish though.

Yeah, the point I was making is that I have done this sort of thing before. Felt I was missing out a little by not "getting" a game.

I might add that time had passed since playing it on PS4 and then on series X. I also had hoped that the series X would clear up the jank and make it play a little better therefore make me "get it" more, but unfortunately millions of flops of power can not tame Unity.

There was a post on Resetera the other day that has stuck with me regarding Balan Wonderworld where the guy said he sounded awful but he was going to buy a couple of copies anyway.

I mean...why? The amount of spare cash washing around the people on that forum must be out of this world.

You fucking weak-ass motherfuckers. Just don't buy it. You see, I had the sense to not buy Returnal.

Yes, I have the strength of mind not to.

It's absolutely nothing to do with the fact that my faulty PS5 was just this morning packaged up and posted back to Sony.

I got GamePass relatively recently. Problem is the majority of the games on there I'm interested in I've already played on PC.

I've installed Outriders and it's all right, I'll probably play it for a few hours. But if I'd paid £70 for it I wouldn't be happy... it feels generic.

Returnal wasn't something I was even vaguely considering but now lots of folk are saying things about it and tempting me greatly but I know I just won't play it so I'm holding off. Made the same mistake of falling for the hype with Red Dead Redemption 2 even though I knew it wasn't my thing; barely played more than a couple of hours of it. The price of buying a game Day One is pretty offputting but it's hard not to get wrapped up in the excitement of a new game's thread, even when it's not something I'd normally be interested in, like Monster Hunter Rise recently.

Paid over the odds for the PS5 digital version of Guilty Gear Strive but that's different because at least I've convinced myself I'll definitely play that one even though I probably won't actually play it.

I've got a lot of exceptional games still to play anyway. I haven't finished Secret of Mana yet, or started Donkey Kong Country 2.

I actually think in this case its a positive of the new £70 price point for Sony games - I'd probably have splurged £40, maybe even £50 but that price really makes me think twice and I know I can hold out against the temptation of a shiny new toy.

I had no intention of getting a PS5 and a chance appearance on Smyths site as I was there for something else, coupled with the knowledge this was a rare opportunity to get one, meant it turned up a few days later.

Now, I don't regret buying it, mainly because it's a great way of playing PS4 games. But I do already have a PS4 and there aren't really any PS5 games yet, so it's really not something I needed to get. FOMO and a late night and a recent payrise and it just being there to get when many couldn't all conspired against me.
