Thinking more about the Mona Lisa...if Miles is a bullshitter would it not make more sense that it's not the original he has with him, though his reaction tells us it is, or it tells us he thinks it is. Would the louvre not hand him a replica, they wouldn't give him the original would they? However rich he is, just off the radar in a way with no security. They'd at least have guards watching it 24/7 right?

If he thinks it's real but it's not then...it doesn't matter because the group have all turned on him anyway. ok well forget all the above.

This was nice Christmas morning viewing. It's a while since I watched the original, but this felt more farcical, not that the original was without that either. And I don't mean it in a bad way.

Sad that Benoit has lost 2 of his online friends in a year.

In Knives Out Ana de Armas injected a really nice “warmth” through her blend of strength/vulnerability and her chemistry with Daniel Craig develops in real time.

This was absent here, and it’s a harsher/brasher film as a result.  Janelle Monáe was really good, don't get me wrong, but her vulnerable side came out through flashbacks and her time with Daniel Craig felt a bit rushed.

I liked it but enjoyed watching Knives Out more.

I thought it was OK. Knives Out felt like RJ had something to prove, though. It was lean and sharp and energetic. This felt quite lethargic and self-satisfied by comparison.

Fine, bound to become a non-Christmas-Christmas-staple, but not a patch on the predecessor.

It's a one watch, never watch again.

Enjoyed this tonight. Agree with others that Knives Out was better but I guess they are different enough that they each have their own thing going.

Spoiler

I was quite thrown by Blanc acting like a a star struck fan/ gormless southern twit to begin with and thought they were taking the fish out of water thing too far - like it wasn’t consistent at all with his character. So his dismantling of a Bron’s murder mystery and the flashbacks were very welcome and almost a relief.

I’m guessing they didn’t try to hide that it was Bron who murdered the Joe Rogan character as it they showed how he handed him the glass in the original scene. But there was enough going on that I wondered if there were two different things going on.

I’m not sure I remember other films leaning into Covid  in this way. They made quite a big deal of it for the first 15 minutes.

Spoiler

I was sure it was going to be part of the plot but then it was irrelevant

Been looking forward to this, loved the first, a proper tight, well written, entertaining whodunit.

This is just a mess. Awful performances, hateful characters bar Blanche, plot holes, bombed to the hilt with Easter eggs and whiffing its own farts. Terrible script in places.

No actual sense of mystery or intrigue.

I really enjoyed this, some good "clean" fun. It's not a patch on the first film arguably, but it's just a wonderfully fun farce, with characters you love to hate and Daniel Craig being truly delectable again.

Spoiler

The scene where he smears Jeremy Renner's hot sauce in his eyes got a big, wincing laugh.

Just finished watching this, perfect Christmas afternoon viewing.

Things we loved that are non spoilery

-It's an almost two hour long roast on Elon Musk.

-The video game references (Among Us obviously but also there seemed to be references to puzzle box style games like The Room series)

-The COVID/mask wearing at the start that weirdly enough gave loads of insight into the various characters, from those who wore them correctly, the one who was wearing it under their nose, the one wearing completely useless netting and the ones just not bothering at all.

I'm sure if I pulled it apart it wouldn't hold up to scrutiny but this was perfect holiday viewing. While I'd love to see Rian do more Star Wars stuff if it was a flat out choice between that and more Knives Out style locked room/mansion/island style mysteries I'd far prefer him to do this until retirement. Brilliant stuff.

Likewise, I felt the exact same. A mess, unfortunately.

I was quite surprised about the pandemic stuff. Every other film or TV show I've seen over the last two years that's set in the real world seems to generally just pretend that it never happened. So it's actually quite interesting to see one that not only acknowledges it but

plays into it and does character things like you mention about the masks, but also allows for that fantastic cameo of Hugh Grant holding a lockdown fad sourdough starter

I missed that!

Only thing I was a bit meh on was the inclusion of the apparently totally irrelevant stoner rando who just happened to be chilling there. Unless I missed something I dont think he impacted anything at all, though maybe that was the point, deliberate misdirect.

This was apparently a reference to

Spoiler

The stoner surfer guy who was apparently staying in a guest house during the O.J. Simpson murders, completely oblivious to what was going on.

Personally I also interpreted it as just a deliberate "this is a red herring!" Inclusion as he kept walking past going "oh just ignore me, passing through" as a kind of little joke at people who read too much into things.

Watching this straight after knives out is quite jarring, they are very different tonally. The characters in knives out were awful people but compelling and likeable.  The characters in this were all horrible and all playing games with each other from the beginning. I just didn't buy the premise that these people would ever associate with each other, let alone raise each other up to success.

I didn't look at my phone though and enjoyed the topical nature of the gags,

Honestly, that got a laugh from me and partner every time. I thought it was brilliant, the fact that it goes nowhere made it even more funny.

It was a brilliant running gag, nothing more.

As an all out murder mystery the first film is better, but for pure comedy this may have edged it.

A day after I'm still cracking up thinking about any of the following:

Spoiler

The Philip Glass composed hourly dong

"Jewey"

Banksy Floating Dock

Sweatshop

The passive aggressive no-smoking alarm

iPad

This isn’t a patch on the first, it’s like Rian Johnson spent the pandemic getting overly online and wrote the script entirely off things Twitter complains about. The first always had a few references to the online discourse, the stuff about the kid being alt-right, an allusion to one of them supporting Trump, etc, but they were offhand lines around the edges of an excellent story.

Whereas here, it’s telling that people are only really championing it based on its political message or the strength of the performances rather than its story. It’s a fun couple of hours, but ultimately pretty disposable.
