Rob Zombie's 'The Munsters'

ROFLS at people thinking the footage is 'poor quality', like he couldn't afford an iphone and just had an old camera in the attic hanging around. Then accidently uploaded it at 320x240p etc. I'm not a fan of zombie and this looks as awful as ever but the footage is clearly attempting to capture that era, somewhat successfully I would say.

Yeah, the 1960s were well known for their HD-but-pixellated TV shows.

It looks absolutely nothing like The Munsters. I'm not sure how someone could look at this and go, "yes, this is what The Munsters looked like".

It doesn't even look like The Munsters Today, which I'd sort of give a pass to on account of it being temporally adjacent to the sort of 80s grindhouse Zombie sometimes draws on, but no, it looks like an early 2000s film-scool-cum-straight-to-video horror movie.

Yeah I'm talking out my arse really, I was never a big fan of the original so I don't recall all the nuances of the style. It's more the little zooms, over acting and adjusting the speed that felt authentic rather than the camera quality. I can't imagine Zombie is trying to perfectly capture the original show (as I remember it at least) because if that was the goal you would surely just make the full thing black/white?

edit : but then briefly looking it up, there were color versions of this show too. I'm going to shut up now, I'm sure Rob Zombie knows more about the munsters than me.

The Munsters and The Munsters Today were really pretty bog standard multi camera sitcoms, from what I remember from when I watched them. It feels a bit like Zombie liked The Munsters as a concept but given he's never done anything approximating a comedy before I can see why this feels kinda naive and amateurish.

You could take that exact same footage and make it look more appropriately period quite easily, but it’s atrociously graded. Too sharp, too clean, too oversaturated. It looks like it’s straight out of the camera.

The black and white teaser on the previous page was poorly done, too. Too crushed, extremely digital looking.

Is it just me, or is the video really poor quality too? As in, low bitrate and pixellated even at HD?

I wish I could take credit for this burn but I saw this comment on Facebook.

Remember those old Sega CD live action games? This looks like that.

I can’t get over the 2005 internet fan-film energy of that trailer. I think this must have the same cinematographer as that Matrix one with the contact juggler.

He’s definitely captured the energy of an era.

The look is so weird. It looks like a Channel 4 sitcom from around 2004, or a reboot of the Crystal Maze from the same period. That's strange in itself, because the look of that era is actually quite hard to capture - I would struggle to describe the aesthetic of a mid-noughties film or TV programme, whereas it's relatively easy to pastiche eighties or nineties stuff. This is one of the few things I've seen that captures the vibe of that period - by accident I assume, as why the hell would you create a Munsters reboot in that style?

Beyond that, that trailer has to be one of the most ineptly made things I've ever seen. It's two and a half minutes long, and I still don't really understand what it is.

The reason for the insane colour grading is because Zombie wanted to make it look like a cartoon.

Quote

"I knew that if I went in and demanded 'This movie's going to be in black and white or forget it!' we would not be talking about the Munsters right now, because it would have never happened. I guaran-f---ing-tee it."

"But what I did do is I made the colors sort of hyper-real. I noticed when the actors were in their makeup and they were just walking around, getting lunch or whatever, they looked like cartoon characters come to life. They were just so insanely colorful. I was like, I have to light the movie in the same fashion. It really seemed at all times like a live action cartoon, which was really exciting."

Zombie reminds me of something someone said about Zack Snyder being all surface.  Something like "He sees it working, but he doesn't understand how."  Bit like a cargo cult.  He's copied 70's grindhouse and exploitation but worse, he's remade Halloween but worse, and musically he's basically been copying White Zombie and Marilyn Manson but worse.

Yeah, I feel like I should be watching it on a friends CD-R via QuickTime.

Just had to send an email recommending this film for a client. Best I could muster (munster?) was, 'Rob Zombie's affectionate remake of the cult 60s sitcom'.

It looks atrociously bad, so stilted, like watching a bad sitcom without a canned laughter track.

Bizarrely it's now been confirmed that there's going to be a physical and VOD release at the end of September too. I don't know if that means the Netflix release is going to come a bit later (reports are now saying Fall), or they're hedging their bets and releasing it everywhere at the same time.

There's another trailer with a mix of stuff from the other one and a few other scenes, none of which help make it look any better.

Going straight to Netflix this September.

Ah yes, I bet the million recently cancelled subscribers will be rushing back now. Another masterstroke bit of business from Netflix.

Not even sure why I even bothered but I took the latest trailer made it black and white added some grain and noise etc  to make it less clean looking … just to see if you could polish a turd…

below is the results while still looking more like an amateur fan movie  it does at least look more roughly like the original series (still looks pants though)
