Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge

I was all set for buying it on Switch… and it appears on Gamepass! Amazing! Played the first 5 levels with my 12yo daughter this evening, loving every second. We’re both huge fans of Scott Pilgrim and this plays just as well, if not better.

I love the intro, and the theme sung by Mike Paton. The in game music suits the game well and the graphics are stunning. The zoo level is glorious, all the background detail etc!

I’ll still buy the Switch version eventually, when it hits the sales.

So when is the Cowabunga Collection out?!

It's as shallow as a puddle that's almost all but dried up. Even my kid got bored before I did, and TMNT is one of his top 3 IPs behind Star Wars and Ninjago (it rotates...). I only carried on because of the music.

It's one of those games that you walk away from in the arcade before your credit is up.

I had similar problems with Scott Pilgrim and Mercenary Kings- pretty to look at but deathly dull to play. Going to be interesting to see if people feel Turtles has staying power after the launch hype.

People are saying it’s boring in their first post after playing it on launch day. I think it’s dead Jim.

I was hyped, as a non-fan of the genre I was looking forward to getting into it as a good pallette cleanser after Elden Ring. Now I’m getting shades of the monkey ball disappointment from this thread.

edit - not trying to disparage anyone’s opinions but is there a possibility this is a side effect of people getting it for free with game pass? Folk just trying it because they can and not being very invested in getting the most out of it? Or is that wishful thinking on my part.

It's a perfectly servicable side-scrolling beat-em-up for Turtles fans, whether you're an aging nerd or a younger fan of the more modern TV shows that most of us here have probably never bothered watching.

Like I said previously, it's fine - if you're not a fan of the genre, maybe check it out at some point. It's definitely a step up from the original arcade games and clearly a nice nostalgia hit for some.

I've enjoyed my first playthrough but hadn't somehow convinced myself it was going to have any depth, so haven't been disappointed on that basis. It's zippy knockabout fun with some Tee Lopes tunes and cute pixel-graphics. It not like we were promised God Hand or something.

If you actually used amalgamated opinion in rllmuk threads as a general barometer for a games quality, you’d end up thinking literally every single one of them was bad.

If you have Gamepass why not play it? Or buy it and play it and have fun.

I've done the story mode now and maxed out Splinter and about to start powering up CJ.

I'm really enjoying it, plays well and yes it is repetitive in places but not enough to put me off playing it!

I mean as far as the enemies go isn't that the point? You're learning their patterns and attacks etc?

I've been moping up some of the challanges but can never see me finishing a level without being hit.

I'm hoping we can get some forum multiplayer going as I think a six player game would be great fun.

As it stands I'm more then happy with the £20 I paid for it.

I love everything about this and it’s so much more fun to play than Streets of Rage 4. Technicalities be damned. This is simple joy.

Take that game's name out of your goddamned mouth.

It's great. If you like side scrolling beat em ups then it's one of the best ever (SoR 4 is the best ever)

As a major fan of the genre it's really hitting all the right notes.

These games are repetitive by design but I love them. Usually play 3 levels at a time.

I think this won't convert anyone that isn't a fan of the genre, but for me it's brilliant. It has clearly been made by people that loved the TMNT games from the peak of "Turtle Power" and the game is just oozing with the same atmosphere, audio themes and visual style as the two main coin ops. So many moves from TMNT Tournament Fighters seem to have made it into the game as well and even the map screen is reminiscent of the non arcade TMNT overhead between levels parts.

I can see there being a fair bit of replayability (as long as you like the genre) with unlockables, different fighting styles and challenges.

I haven't been near the multiplayer yet but as long as the net code is decent then I can see it being a lot of fun.

If you’re able to play TMNT IV for two hours or longer without getting bored you’ll be fine here.

Side-scrolling beat ‘em ups are my favourite genre overall. Final Fight made me a gamer. AvP gave me my first ever nerd-gasm. I see Bayonetta as an extreme transcendence. The one-two punch of CPS-1 and CPS-2 on MiSTer and SoR4 helped me fall back in love after years away… This? Well, I’ve never liked any of the beat ‘em up Turtles games. Super-repetitive with mundane enemies and absolutely nothing to their movements or traps. All that is non-existent. I thought this was going to break the cycle after the videos looked so promising.

I’m all over everything else that’s TMNT, even the average stuff like the Michael Bay films.

I think it's smart that this isn't trying to be SoR4. What would be the point? It's an alternative, and it's knockabout silly fun, with a greater onus on multi-player.

Even having played through the story solo, I think it could have done with a couple fewer levels, but I had a great time with it. SoR4 is the one for the purists, no doubt. SR is its drunken cousin.

I think most negativity will be down to what it's actually trying to be on purpose - and it's achieved exactly what it sets out to do.

I was never a massive fan of Turtles in Time, but it's obvious for fans of that game that it ticks all the buttons.

The real question being what it isn’t.

It’s an open source FPGA all-in-one. Arcades and consoles. Outputs like a RetroTink if you don’t have a CRT. It’s basically the best thing ever. Surprised you’ve not heard of it.

Being able to finally have literal arcade perfection in the home, at that scale, is such a boon.

This is so so good. I've never really clicked with the side scrolling brawler genre, even Streets of Rage 4 left me a bit nonplussed. But this just feels great to play, the soundtrack's fantastic and I'm loving it. I should try SoR4 again shouldn't I?

What's an FPGA, and what is RetroTink?

I’m holding off for the new model… it moans at you when you don’t give it enough attention, yet when you do it has a sore head. It’s called the MISSus.

I’ll see myself out.

It's a multi-format hardware emulation system you have to put together yourself.

FPGA stands for Field Programmable Gate Array, a reconfigurable computer chip that for emulation purposes can be programmed to replicate as closely as possible old computer, console or arcade hardware architecture.

RetroTink is a display adapter for playing old hardware on modern displays (I had to google what this one was though).

It's very cool but relatively obscure hobbyist stuff.

I sadly bounced off this hard, alas. Playing single-player definitely doesn't benefit it, and in not a huge fan of the special move bar system, but oddly the one thing that really spoils it for me is that it does something I hate in best-em-ups: has lots of objects you can clearly jump over/onto... But can't. It just feels super-wrong, and completely messes with my flow. I want to be bouncing around the stage like, well, a ninja turtle, not arbitrarily hitting invisible walls in the air every few seconds!

A silly little thing, but it really grates on me and takes me out of the zone when I'm playing, which is enough to spoil the game for me. Which is doubly a shame as it looks and sounds brilliant :(

I've just played another couple of stages and it's not the same buzz I had yesterday. In much the same way SoR4 just wasn't SoR2, this just isn't the SNES or MD Turtles games for me. I know the newer releases are much bigger and fuller, but I still prefer the original games.

The original TMNT Arcade is one of my favourite arcade games of all time. This is “just” more of the same, with modern QoL improvements and secrets and stuff to extend longevity. I couldn’t ask for more.

Was this a deliberate reference to the song Turtle Power by Partners in Kryme?

I remember not being blow away by my first run through of SoR4 (mainly due to the armoured enemies) and then went on to clock up 130 hours on it.

I'd like to play this but the physical version is 6 weeks out and i'm not rewarding this double dipping date fuckery
