This has been me with Pokémon threads in general through the last couple of years, sadly. But PLA's reception has been very positive even from the same critical voices. Would have been interesting to hear if some commenters here had the same experience.

Sorry, that acronym's already taken.

My Curry's order is still AWOL after a week, so I've ordered a second copy now, this time through Argos.  They're doing it for £39.99, for which I got a tenner off thanks to a gift card I was given at Christmas.

If the gods are kind I'll be playing it tomorrow.

As with other Pokémon games, the standard Shiny rate in Pokémon Legends: Arceus is 1/4096, according to Serebii.net. However, mass outbreaks increase the Shiny chance to a whopping 1/158.2 chance, making it one of the best ways to find Shiny Pokémon.

If the Pokémon you’re hunting has a completed Pokédex entry (level 10), then the chance to find them Shiny increases. For general hunting, it doubles to a 1/2048.5 chance. In mass outbreaks, it goes up to a 1/152.9 chance.

If you have a perfect Pokédex entry for that Pokémon, then the general chance to find them Shiny doubles again to a 1/1024.38 chance. For mass outbreaks, it goes up to a 1/141.7 chance.

Once you get the Shiny Charm item, the chances to find Shiny Pokémon increases yet again. Since you need level 10 Pokédex entry for each Pokémon to get the Shiny Charm, this makes the standard rate to find a Shiny 1/819.6. The Shiny rate in mass outbreaks then becomes 1/137.02.

With a perfect Pokédex entry and the Shiny Charm, the standard Shiny rate is 1/585.57 and the mass outbreak rate is 1/128.49.

Plus you're seening a lot more Monsters due to open world traveling about then you did with random battles

Yeah so full odds at the point I'm only a couple of hours in basically, don't think I have completed Wurmple in the dex yet. Never encountered a wild shiny like that before in any Pokemon game (not counting GO obviously). Crazy!

Yeah finished the Endgame main quest just now

Spoiler

Last 3 battles where a bit of slog but Emporeon with Ice Beam wrecked most of his team and then I was planning to use Luxray and Crush (with Emp/Ice Beam back up) did Grigante. Duediceye (or however it's spelled) tanked and spanked him down while I was ressing the others

210 Seen
194 Captured
137 Complete

Done all main quests/requests that lead to Pokemon (other than the Sea Legend one which I haven't a clue over).

I can't see me capturing or completing them all, but can see me pushing to see them all - which sounds like the trigger for the final end.

It's uneven and flawed - I can see the 7/8s being on target, not so much anything higher - but it's the most exciting Pokemon has been in years. If they build off this and learn it could be something really special.

Nintendo announced Legends Arceus has sold through more then 6,5 million copies since it’s launch a week ago.

It’s the biggest reported launch* of the Switch era, beating the 6 million reported for Pokémon Sword/Shield and Pokémon Brilliant Daimond/Shining Pearl.

*AC:NH launch week figures were never reported. It likely had a bigger launch then Legends Arceus.

Haven't had much time to play this recently, but what I have played has been fantastic.  IMO It's just the reinvention of the formula that the series needed.

I played all the way through Blue & Silver on the Gameboy but when I was doing the same on Sapphire I kinda lost interest in the whole thing halfway through.  It was just the same game, the same thing I'd done twice over already but with minor tweaks.  I decided to leave it a while & skipped all the subsequent games until Sun & Moon where I tried it again but despite the all the upgrades to visuals & moves it was still pretty much the same formula I had tired of.  I got Let's Go Eevee & enjoyed it a fair bit, but it was mostly nostalgia & the inability to play with a standard controller was a pain & I drifted off of that sometime before getting to Cinnabar Island.  Along comes the Pokémon Direct where Legends Arceus was announced & every other announcement bored me but Arceus made me sit up & take notice.  It looked rough, but it also looked like it was actually moving the game play forward.

And upon playing it... it has.  It has rough edges sure, but it's finally a more interesting & varied way to play Pokémon that I'd been wanting for so long.

I had thought the Unown side-quest was something I’d have to get further into the game to properly start, but then I remembered that once you learn how the Unown script isn’t that hard to read & you can decipher the messages in the Pokédex.

Spoiler

They appear to be location hints. If you can figure out where they refer to & can find/reach that place, there’s something there?

I’ve put in 2 and a half hours today, finally, and here are my first impressions:

I like the art style and general vibrancy

The poke balls have a nice pop-snap sound effect when used

The pop-in and texture quality are appalling

The ‘mon then’ pose that Buizel strikes when going into battle makes me giggle every time

The research tasks appeared quite grindy at first, but are not, fortunately

Ponyta!!!

Definitely enjoying it. It’s very moreish, and I like that they’ve leaned into the Go/Let’s Go style of capturing. Not knowing right away whether the ‘mon will run away or charge you keeps things interesting and the tasks encourage you to vary things.

241/240/144

Anyone got a SpiritTomb they'd trade - I'd trade straight back. Just cbato look up 50 more wisps :D

Got bored this evening so did Spirit Tomb.

That's 242/242/156. Some serious bullshit in the last boss fight.

Really enjoyed that - glad it's done though. (Can't see myself pushing to 10* by increasing the 156, still 15k to go). If they learn from this the next thing will be amazing.

To fill the Dex entry for Magikarp, you need to see it use Splash.

100 TIMES!

Yup, that's me sending a Magikarp out against a Magikarp for a 40 round Splash-off, then. On top of that, you also need to catch loads. I think I may have gotten lucky and stumbled on an unreported outbreak, which included a level 55 Alpha, which I dutifully caught. It only knows Splash!

So question. The coverage has meant I’ve picked this up. I’ve never really played a Pokémon game before though have watched my kids play them.

Do I jump straight into Legends or do I play my kids copy of Pokémon Sword first? I gather they’re quite different but wasn’t sure if the new style of game would spoil the old style of game if I chose to come back to that later?

Not at all. Whilst there’s quite some overlap in mechanics here and there, Arceus puts everything in a context that makes it a very different experience. Plus, storywise its set far in the past, disconnected from the overall story of the mainline series(although it builds on top of earlier established lore).

Jump straight into Arceus. If you like that, try the other Switch RPG’s.

As much as I'm loving this game it does appear to require the same kind of grinding as I experienced in Lets Go Eevee.  My Star Rank is now 6 so I can command up to Level 80 Pokémon, but even with sticking with a core team, going back into previous areas repeatedly & fighting loads of Mon's my Starter has only just cracked Level 50 with the rest trailing behind.

I've tried the Space-Time Distortions but even though I can win, a single battle tends to wipe out most of my team.  It's a good thing I like exploring this world, completing the Pokedex/side-quests & fighting Mon's as I think I'm going to be doing a lot of that before reaching the end of the main plot.

You "need" to be 70 for the endgame and post endgame and final endgame stuff.

It's very easy to overlevel star level so I wouldn't use that as indicator.

You have loads of xp candy so don't be afraid to use those - and Grit/EV makes a huge difference.

Initially I was using Grit to buff up my Mon's Defense/Special Defense stats so they could take a hit (even from Super Effective attacks) & still be in the fight, but buffing up Speed & Attack/Special Attack stats are important too as then you can move first & hit hard so your Mon's Weaknesses never even come in play, & that not even factoring in move choices or using the stronger or faster version of a move...

I do like how moves can never be permanently forgotten anymore.  You can swap in a weaker version of a move for multiple uses in a certain environment (Thundershock/Bolt rather than Thunder while out at sea, for instance) while always having the option to restore any of the moves the Pokémon has learned.

Did some more yesterday, I've opened up a new area with lots more things to chase me down and kill me.

Imagine my surprise to find that almost all of my Pokémon in my party are actually ready to evolve, but the game hasn't told me how to do that yet, so I had to sit with YouTube to find out why they didn't evolve on their own like all the other Pokémon games I've played.

It did tell you, very early on. And you, like me, skimmed it or just didn't register it properly at the time. Also like my son, who sent me a WhatsApp asking how to evolve Pokémon, when I hadn't worked it out yet

Thankfully, I watched a friend of mine start their stream and saw the bit we'd ignored. From that, I was then also able to find out why my Luxio didn't have Ice Fang despite me buying it from the tutor!
