Nice work Vems!

I'm putting together some boss guides.  Bosses 1-4 are no worries, but fuck me I find the last boss so hard to.. describe in a meaningful way.  I haven't really 'learned' the fight enough to articulate how to do it, despite having done it a bunch of times now!!  It feels very instinctual and just completely seat-of-the-pants and amazing.

I think I've got the last boss down. I basically know when to parry, when to block and when to dodge. Doesn't mean he doesn't get any hits in, because it's easy to make a mistake. But man, due to all that parrying my writs are tired as fuck. It's an intense fight for sure. :)

Spoiler

I have now spared all the bosses. Only thing left is a complete the game age 25 or less run.

But what a game. Best thing I've played since Returnal came out almost a year ago. Really felt like I was choreographing a Gareth Evans' film at times.

Easy Allies review is spot-on.

Man. I probably shouldn't have stayed up til 4am making this, but here we are!

Its a bit rougher than my usual stuff but hey ho. Got to that point where it was good enough if not as perfect as I'd like.

The question is, can I finish the series before Elden Ring? Lol

Had a fantastic time with this game, really grabbed me and I haven't put it down until I hit the platinum:

Spoiler

And final boss spoilers:

Spoiler

I went through each boss with avoid/building focus until I got to Yang and he forces parry. I'm now really interested in starting again with a parry/structure build but I think I'll wait for the respec patch rather than starting an entirely fresh save.

Oh go on then, one more.

I'm not going to have time to research Yang enough to be able to make a guide before friday. But this has been fun!  Might stream some Sifu tonight if anyone wants to come along and chat shit with me.   Gonna do a permadeath, no upgrades, no hud challenge run! :)

Got the Platinum. One of only 2.7% apparently. I normally don't care for trophies so it says something about the quality of this game and Returnal before it that I went for it.

Just in time for Elden Ring and curious where SloClap goes next. :)

Adding myself to the platinum club too 🙂 I also don't normally care about trophies but got utterly obsessed with chasing the under age 25 one in particular - eventually managed to get to the credits aged 22 with no deaths on the final level, which I was pretty chuffed with.

NIce to see Returnal mentioned so often in this thread, there's definitely an itch that they both scratch.

they both involve timing, overwhelming odds, and constant violence

yo I just beat the first boss age 21, almost had him at the end but I decided to see if I could spare him, mission failed

oh shit I just beat Sean without meaning to. I decided there was no hope I would beat the club so I would just take it easy and learn it

36

sean is fairly easy to dodge but hard to parry, it seems

Almost made the true ending on one life again!  Died one hit away from sparing Yang.  The bastard.

I can only hope to achieve your level of mastery

almost defeated jafar with no shortcuts and no dying. Done at 21 again. He got me caught in a chain of punishment out of nowhere right at the beginning

boss 3 is straight up impossible. I think I hit her once. Went in at 40, died of old age. Non-stop suffering. Oh well!

Still loving this game. Now on the final boss, but in my 50's, so may need to have another run through The Tower first. I'm determined to make it through to the end before checking out any guides too! I do have a few questions though- a few of the specials talk about a follow up move on a push, though when I push someone they always end up quite far away. What am I doing wrong? Should I be pushing them into a wall? Also, when you do end up pushing them far way, whats the best way to capitalize on that? I've had some success with the slide tackle, but it feels inconsistent. Thanks!

Push is a state you can put the enemy into using moves like back forward light attack, or combos like light > light > heavy.

For the 'during push' moves to work, you have to do them within milliseconds of the push being triggered, i.e. you need to be confident your push is going to land, then hit the button for the follow up as if it was a combo, basically.  If you're too late you just punch the air.  :D

You can also unlock something called “chasing strikes” or something similar, I have it permanently unlocked even though I don’t get people into pushable states all that often. My jam is the spinning hook kick, snap kick, charged back fist. I should really spend several runs practicing my parries

@robdood in what situations are light attacks preferable to heavy?

@Floshenbarnicalthe most obvious use case is for interrupting enemy combos, Eg when you get a powered up regular chump, jab can be useful to throw in between attacks to stop their annoying kick strings.

The back turned light attack from the claw move (XY quickly, then X) is awesome too

Otherwise it's just an animation preference thing, really. I love when you get a boss low on hp and manage to land 2x light attack x4 combos on them.

Did you know, you can also start combos that usually start with heavy attack (according to the move list) with light attack? So Eg YYXY can also be input XYXY, YYYY can be done using XYYY. Etc. You just get benefit of a fast first attack.

There's a lot of moves like that, that are only really useful in non-outnumbered scenarios.  e.g. the move where you hold Y after a parry - looks amazing, but puts you into a long animation, takes ages to actually Do the Thing, in the meantime some chump will punch you in the back of the head.

Bloody hell, just realised the stream I did last night, I forgot to actually press the GO LIVE button, so I sat there, OBS told me it was uploading and I had a green connection, etc.  But it meant nothing because I didn't press the button.

I literally sat on my own, talking to myself, for 90 mins while I completed the game, for no good reason.

Lol.

Struggling with this a bit, some probably obvious questions please:

Any tips for parrying in this? It’s immensely difficult to time right.

I get that the fiery attacks are unblockables, but sometimes the baddies have a glowing, semi-fire outline. What does this mean?

Permanant upgrades - are these the ones unlocked at the shrines?

Not so obvious, so don't worry about it!

To answer them though-

1. Parrying is difficult. Once you have a feel for the game, it's worth going back to the Slums and practicing on those guys as they are much slower. It's better, imo, to get the timing for your avoids down. Which is holding the block button and pushing up or down to avoid high or low attacks. Keeps you in close range for counter attacks.

2. So the glowing baddies are elites. They sometimes start this way, but standard enemies can sometimes become elites when you try a takedown on them. They are a lot tougher than your standard baddies, but if you beat one it reduces your death counter by 1.

3. Permanent upgrades only happen once you have bought the upgrade the required number of times in a run. So you buy it once to unlock it for that run, then if you buy it 5 more times within that run it's then permanently unlocked for future runs. If you aren't able to buy it these 6 times in a single run, you can still chip away at it over several. So if for example, you bought the unlock for that run, then bought the permanent for the same skill 3 more times you would only have to buy the run unlock and then the permanent 2 more times in a future run. Clear as mud, right? 😂

I hope that helps!
