What skills are essential to grind for?

I think the slide kick is a good one to have, weapon proficiency (that basically gives you a couple more hits with whatever you’re using as you can use it busted - note different to the shrine perks), and catching weapons midair is very cool.

I think you just need to practice a bit more. It really is a case that the more you play the better you get, it may not seems like it but it really does start to click eventually.

Skills I use the most are:

The strong sweep, which is a focus move that guarantees a knock down.
The environmental mastery, which gives you access to a load of items lying round the place

The snap kick, which has good forward movement to allow you to close range quickly with a decent damaging attack

Rob is right though, none are ‘essential’ and mainly just give you a bit of a helping hand.

I'm actually starting to draft a guide for this game! I want more people to get over the hump that is figuring out dodges and parries, I'm fairly consistent with them now.

@MikeF for Sean's second phase, the trick is to alway just block the first attacks of his strings. That way you can avoid the lottery as blocking works high and low by default.  After that first hit, then go into your dodging.

I do recommend replaying Club until you leave in your twenties. Once I'd done that I had the skills to just walk through the rest of the game without hitting a huge barrier like that again.

Of course, if you're getting bored and have years to spare, having a wander round the museum is great fun! It's probably my favourite stage of the game.

As for the 3 disciples beforehand.. I'd practice either on the lone male one (non shortcut route) or the woman in the first challenge room after you've cleared the other enemies.  I've been studying them..  If you just stand still and block, they only ever do the three punch high combo. Block the string and listen to the sound effects to hear the timing.

They seem to only deviate to the low combo or alternative high combo when you're mid animation or as retaliation to your own attacks.

Just breathe and take it easy, they don't have that many attacks, only the last hit of their combos does big posture damage, so you're pretty safe to block most of it, and concentrate on evading the last hits. The big spin gives you a good half a second to react!

That's my problem with him.

First phase is pretty easy, if only he used the same moveset on the second phase all the time

I have a save at his door, so can try to beat him at a lower age before trying to do the level without any deaths

Finally beat Sean at the ripe old age of 77, needless to say I didn't get very far in the Museum

Still at least I know I can beat him now, his second phase is a bit of a lottery with regards to which moves he will do though

Honestly, I think most of us were the same. The more you play the more you’ll used to him.

In his later phases he can start with a low and he has the potential to do a low after his shoulder charge. For this reason you should ALWAYS block his first attack and you should always block the next move after his shoulder charge, it’s safer than trying to deal with a potential low. This sounds tricky but you do get used to it. All his other attacks can be dodged with the standard dodge and the right timing.

In his last phase he will attack and back off relentlessly. Just focus on dodging what you can and keeping an eye on your posture bar so it doesn’t get too high, if it does, back right off. You’re looking for him to finish a combo in order to counter (which is rare) or you’re looking to build focus from dodging. This can be made faster by buying the upgrade at the dragon shrines.

As soon as you get enough focus - use it and get some damage. You’ll probably need to build focus around 3-4 times to finish him off.

Finished this last night.

Regarding difficulty. Sure it’s tough but the game isn’t long so it wants you to ‘git gud’ in order to get to the end. They literally want you (the player) to become a Sifu; to become proficient and skilled.

For all its difficulty, people are still finishing the game within a week. Again, if it was easier you’d finish it in a day or 2 and then probably complain that it wasn’t worth the money without really understanding what has been made here. The devs have created an excellent piece of tech that they really want you to get into.

This really is by far the closest thing to a kung fu action movie that I’ve played. The more you play the more you see subtleties that the devs have included because of this vision. Where else can you bounce a weapon off an enemies face, catch it again and start beating him with it!

If they were smart who ever has the Matrix licence needs to lease this engine. It would be a winning combination IMO!

Ah man, having an amazing session tonight. Dusted last boss after a few tries, have got a save file at 24yo going into last level, and have now just the last boss again to get true ending..

Spoiler

Omg I can't believe the third phase!

So awesome. Intense as fuck.

I love the fight with Yang, it's really reminiscent of the back and forth in Sekiro and I kinda wish there'd been more of that in the later stages!

Its a great game but I do feel that one I learned how to beat the disciples the rest of the game was a bit too straightforward (until I met Yang).

I'm loving it though, I'm now way more capable with parries and ffs why didn't anyone tell me there was a taunt before!?

(it's right on the dpad BTW)

Edit: deleted my stupid post, went for a walk and downloaded it again. As an initiate must. I will return to the path.

The timing windows are pretty tight. Make sure your TV is in ‘game mode’ or it’s equivalent. Might seem obvious but I struggled massively with Sekiro until I realised I had it on the wrong mode and cut latency down by about 60 m/s

I don't mean to be too 'git gud' about this, but that difficult spike literally consists of being able to tell the difference between two attacks.  It's clearly hard for a lot of people, but I'm really not sure what exactly they could have done to make it more obvious.

(I'm going to make a guide for it this week though :D)

I’ve managed to do level 1 with no deaths and get through level 2 aged 28 I think.

Level 3 boss’ first phase is still a dick with the low high thing which I keep fucking up.

Always block the first attack.

If it's low, it's going to be Low > High > Low > High with an optional High at the end.

For everything else, keep avoiding high, if she does a spinny legs thing the fifth hit will be low.

That's it! It's just a matter of practice and watching her animations.

If you can, bring a staff as it makes blocking a bit safer/do less posture damage.

I don’t even engage with the first form while she’s swinging as I find the timing tough.

She will nearly always finishes her combos regardless of where you are, so sit just slightly out of range of her swipes and when you see the combo finishing dash in and start attacking.

For anyone who wants to make Boss 3 better (beat her off your own back first ofcourse) :

Spoiler

Make sure you have two pips in weapon strength, and one in durability, take a knife in and press forward forward square.

Just keep repeating and you can obliterate both phases.

You will need the lower light attack unlocked too.

This helped me power through her multiple times and made going for the sub 25 run less time consuming.

The game has a few issues with it’s camera and a few rage inducing bits but I’m most impressed with how lean and focussed the game is. The detective board stuff is fun, as is unlocking things but the core loop really comes across as an uncompromising, singular vision.

Which is rather pretentious now I read it out loud but still.

There are no staffs in level 3 that I’ve seen though I can take a baseball bat in. Thing is if you drop it you can’t see it in the snow and have to spam circle over the general area where it might be

There's two on the third floor - one near a janitor trolley (broom handle) and another held by a Disciple woman.
