Modern Retro Handheld Game Players thread

The Anbernic is already pushing it in terms of being too small for my liking, so the Miyoos aren't really something I'd consider. I thought the original Mini was cute but ended up giving it to someone ages ago as I couldn't play it for more than a few minutes.

None of these companies have come close to making a device I'm completely happy with. Maybe one day.

Not a fan of them circle pads. I guess there wasnt really any other option though.

You could have recessed thumbsticks like on the GPD Win Max 2. As it stands, looks like it would be a good device mainly for 2D games. There's a bit of a worrying trend where handheld manufacturers are putting thumbsticks on that are mostly a box ticking, vestigal exercise. I guess this isn't quite as bad as the examples of vertical handhelds with sticks right at the bottom, but all the same I doubt I would use them.

That's how they get you hooked, affordable enough to buy but have enough issues that you're always looking for the next one.

Don’t get me started on Anbernic.

351P - screen designed for GBA but it’s a bit pap compared to a 640*480 screen

351MP - I think the metal is a detriment (too heavy), would much prefer a plastic model

353P - Jelos is okay but no real good custom firmware until AmberElec gets a release out (Jelos boot time is ridiculous).  I suppose I should try ArkOS again but I like having most settings already sorted.

If the Miyoo Mini+ was readily available I would have already ordered one.  353XX is tempting but the overall package (especially battery) seems better on the Miyoo - even if I think I would prefer a larger machine.

The fact I have the above three plus an Odin Lite and a Steam Deck says it all.  Nothing is perfect, but the next one might be.  Repeat until wallet empty.

R351p is the plastic version of rg350m with no WiFi though?.

Miyoo is my favourite except for those shoulder buttons. Plus onion os should be the defacto standard than the garbage they put out for stock.

Saving that can't wait for the future when Xbox 360 and PS3 would be possible

I think it’s impossible to make a device that ticks every box for every format.

The Miyoo is wonderful for putting in your coat pocket and taking out with you, more so than any other handheld, but the screen is tiny and the shoulder buttons are next to useless, so it suits handheld and Mega Drive games better, I find.

Features that make them more suited to one use case or format makes them less good at something else. 4:3 screens suit 16-bit stuff really well, but makes them rubbish for PSP and game streaming.

This is why we should all own at least seven of them.

Oh my.

That ticks an awful lot of boxes for me.

Sidenote, it's sorta crazy that we're seeing hall effect sticks and in some cases triggers from smaller companies like Retroid and Retro Fighters while the console manufacturers refuse to embrace the technology.

Because it involves new tooling and ordering in advance. On the flip side its also because they're more than happy for controllers to fail as it makes them more $$$ from people buying new ones. Nintendo must be making a mint from selling new joy cons.

Not really. Send them back to Nintendo and they'll fix them without charge

Not common knowledge, and also doesn't apply to joy cons out of warranty. Most parents I have several joy cons because of this.

On the Joy-cons specifically I don't know how much more expensive it would be for Nintendo to go with hall effect sticks.

I installed a hall effect stick in my left Joycon a few weeks ago and the replacement part was, naturally enough, the same size as the one I replaced. It didn't involved any sort of soldering on my part so the joy con assembly process would be unchanged for Nintendo.

It really does seem like they've done the math and have concluded it's worth more to them to continue using the inferior sticks as they'll sell more joy cons that way.

Yeah it has to do with number and ordering, but yeah it wasn't that much different from installing it myself. had no issues at all since.

Colours and a size comparison. They've got the widths listed wrong but to me it looks like the screen will be the same size as the RP3+. from lining up mine with my 3dsXL

Yes they do. They've never quibbled on multiple of mine which were well out of warranty.

I will concede that the joycons and indeed all current gen console joysticks are shit, however.

Wow this is new to me. We have several joy cons that need to be sent then. Thanks for letting me know, always appreciated being corrected.

I tried to used the built-in updater AmberELEC on my RG351P via a wi-fi adapter to 20230203, the update ran through but when I rebooted it literally took 10 minutes to get to the menus the first time and subsequent times it just got stuck on the logo. In the end had to completely wipe the card and start a new. Not sure what triggered it, but might be worth leaving updates until a new one arrives.

You got a link to the hall effect stick? I would rather just replace mine than send them back again!

More on topic…. I have the Super NT and I love it, restricting me to original carts has meant ive actually played games on it and im thinking about an Analogue Pocket for the same reason but have read some people dont rate the GBA on it due to the screen choice, are these people being overly picky or genuine drawback?

Those are the sticks I got.

Relatively expensive for a pair of sticks but they are easy enough to fit provided you follow iFixits guide carefully.

And ordered an SD card with 35000 games on as I'm tired of faffing about downloading and setting up. Completely drained the battery near enough on first use.

Why did I never buy this before lol

If you don’t mind me asking/ out of interest, where did you buy the SD card from?

Anyone have a recommended Android or Retroarch emu/core for Amiga and Spectrum? I tend to use a standalone ones on Mac and have always found Fuse impossible to set up in Retroarch.

In case anyone was interested the Retroid Pocket Flip goes on sale tomorrow morning.

https://www.goretroid.com/en-gb/collections/frontpage/products/retroid-pocket-flip

Unfortunately for people in the UK it will be available from 2AM, and the Sport Red is limited to 1500 units. So unless you are willing to stay up late you might struggle to get one of those. I assume there'll be more of the other colours.
