PSVR2 - out now!

At the absolute least, they could allow old PSVR games to work on the new headset but using the old Move controllers and camera (with adapter). Slightly better than having to keep the V1 headset and breakout box lying around.

Hopefully, they come up with a better (ie. full BC) solution without the need for game patches, but I hadn't fully considered the tech differences.

Patches will be required whatever the solution. You can't use the PSVR2 with the PS Camera because I believe the PSVR2 has no lights for the camera to track, so a game would then have to be patched to use the camera for the moves only, and the PSVR2 to use the inside-out cameras in the headset for tracking. I can't see any dev doing that or even Sony recommending it. You may as well go all in and patch it all for the PSVR2.

BC is not something simple that Sony can just do for all PSVR games. A fair bit of work will have to go into each. Worth it for the likes of Astrobot, Blood & Truth and No Man's Sky, but NMS is dependent on the devs doing so, which I reckon they might. Notice I haven't mentioned PSVR's best game: Skyrim, with that being in MS's domain now, there's little to no chance of seeing a PSVR2 update or new version entirely. :(

It's making me reconsider buying some of the current VR games I had an eye on. Like what's the point if they're gonna be locked to a defunct headset and might never be patched? Need some clarity, sharpish!

Yeah, hold off.

Presumably all of PSVR's tracking is handled by an API, so I imagine supplying games with motion data for the actual headset wouldn't be much of an issue. It's the controls which would seem to be the sticking point, as the new VR controllers and the Moves are physically quite different even if you manage to map the tracking at the software level, plus I don't know if the DualSense would be able to replicate all the interactions of a camera-tracked DualShock 4; maybe it could provide enough spatial information from its built-in sensors.

My guess is that Sony could implement some form of backwards compatibility but it would end up being a whitelist system, with some stuff not mapping properly. Hard to say how worthwhile a venture that would be when most of the popular games will likely see native ports to PSVR2; even no-frills ports would look a lot better due to the resolution bump. Sony incentivising developers to port their games – and offer free upgrades for existing owners – might be a better approach from a resourcing perspective.

I wonder what the resolution will look like when viewing non VR content. I always liked the idea of using the headset like a giant cinema screen on PSVR1 but the resolution just wasn’t quite there.

My Oculus Rift (not to be confused with Quest) was good enough for that. When playing Elite Dangerous in VR I'd have netflix in a virtual window to watch stuff like Star Trek TNG and whatnot. :)

Good to hear. Is PSVR2’s resolution comparable?

Better pre-order this in the first minute it goes up.

Absolutely.

I doubt it will be the case, but really want to know if this is backwards compatible with PSVR1.
If so, I will immediately be selling my PS4 Pro and OG PSVR.

On the subject of backwards compatibility, each game will have to be re-done to take advantage of the new controllers and inside-out tracking. What's more likely is redone versions re-released on PSVR2.  I'll happily pay for Astrobot again.

I'd wager they're absolutely going to redo the older, more popular titles for it. The controllers wouldn't work with backwards compatibility, and presumably the camera and all the other gumph needs to be taken into account.

Either way I'm all in for this, it looks great. Resident evil 4 is coming to it for Christ's sake!

I wonder if Valve will throw us a few scraps and give us Alyx, (Is this likely?)

I'm very excited, even though the RRP is definitely going to sting the old bottom. I'm guessing at least £399.
