I wonder if I should try and cancel and order that horizon pack as well... I wasn't really that fussed but if the price difference is that big it seems daft not to. Just for another showcase on launch day.

Then again, no man's sky, gt7 and resi might keep me quiet.

I am excite.

Maybe people should row back their expectations, it’s an early launch game

plus that Bloomberg story about them halving production was just fake canoes.

I've ordered one and controller chargers (and bought a Playseat and  wheel for GT 7!). But I do wonder what the logic is in not supporting PSVR 1 games? It can't be that hard to write an API that coverts the tracking for developers??

Far enough every little indy VR game might not work - but there is absolutely NO EXCUSE for Astrobot VR not to work at launch. A £70 PS5 upgraded version (later in the year) is likely the reason - but still pretty shitty of them.

I'm not into sim racers. Not at all really. I like the over the top thrills of arcade racers throwing all sorts of shit at me..

To actually properly simulate being in the car though, to the level they look like they've done in GT7, that has me interested. To put you there on the track in a real race something different. It does look a bit wow fucking hell.  Making a sim even more sim might get me in is what I'm saying. I think I'm going to have to buy GT7.

astrobot is one I understand.
It’s all outside in tracking of the (large) controller light bar from the external camera; not looking down to catch a glimpse of the controller from inside out tracking, when that controller might be held any which angle.

You really think it's THAT hard to convert one set of tracking data into another? A bit of rewriting the code maybe.. but come on this is a first party VR title.

IF the games only use some specific parts of the accessible API. What if the game has access to the actual camera image? How do you tell that a game doesn't use it because any game that does could be very broken. Previously they knew all PSVRs had a camera. Now they don't. This isn't just responding to the game asking "where is the left hand"?

And of course there is a money aspect to all of this. No one will argue that Sony couldn't have at least ported their first party stuff for free. It's just dumb to try to argue it's so easy they didn't need to do anything. Unless you have those APIs or are actually working with this stuff yourself.

I'm tempted to cancel my vanilla set and re-order the Horizon pack but the date on the listing stating February 22nd-28th is putting me off as the lure of new hardware is strong and I want to play it on launch day.

I'm not suggesting that every small Indy VR game would be back compatible, but that Sony haven't bothered (with all their resources) to make their own first party stuff work is pretty stupid imo.

No word from the Superhot VR people?

It would be awesome to be able to play with something a little more forgiving than the Moves. (Not if it means doing the 10 minute challenge again though, I’m not getting any younger).

I though it was always only a guaranteed launch week delivery and not launch day?

The Dualsense Edge was “guaranteed launch day delivery” yet most people got them the day after. Hopefully they get the VR shipment out in time.

Assuming some simple Sony VR API existed, little indie games be the ones most likely to use it, and they’d be really easy to translate. The program asks for the position and orientation of the head and controllers in 3D space and then the OS just reports that. Easy!

But if the system lets serious developers access the raw sensor data - which is basically just a colour video feed and 2 six-axis motion sensors - then any game which uses that data directly is essentially impossible to translate across cleanly.* And I expect that’s how the fancier, more expensive VR games actually worked, perhaps even the only way it worked.

*Take the PSVR2 controller and headset sensor data, map that in to positions of those objects in 3D space, then translate that in to a faked video feed of an imaginary PSVR setup being used in an idealised room, including a fake user body and limbs to properly display sensor occlusion.

Edit - On the gripping hand Sony can just rewrite their own games to fit PSVR2. Which I’m sure they are doing for some.

Makes sense, think I'll cancel and re-order then. You'll probably find me moaning about my order not being shipped come the 22nd and it will all be my own bloody fault.

How are the new motion controllers tracked in 3D? Do they have inside-out tracking cameras on each one too?

no, but I bet that they’ve more than one point to be recognised by the cameras, and it’s not a giant glowing rectangle to be imaged in a direct line between the user and a camera above or below the tv from about three metres away.

I’m sticking with the standalone pack after feeing tempted to change it myself to the Horizon one, but tbh I’ll have GT7, Resi 8 and No Mans Sky. GT7 now looking like the killer app imo.

I really don’t understand why the marketing went with Horizon when GT7 is proper next level stuff.

because one immerses you in a make believe world and allows you to experience proper hand presence, the other is “sitting in cars” and therefore great if you’re really into that.

also: horizon is a brand that the other VR headsets don’t have. Everyone has a racing game, and VR is transformative in all of them.

They’ve done GT pack ins in the past, and I’d argue it’s still one of the premier racing experiences, and if anyone was going to splash out on fancy new hardware it’s the VR petrol heads.

I just think it’s odd they left it relatively late to reveal it properly because the impressions have been overwhelmingly positive.

Even if they didn’t lead with it they should have made more of a noise about it during the the initial pricing/pre-order announcement.

I am fully on board for launch, I have got Call of the Mountain and already have GT7, RE village and No Mans Sky.   I quite like the look of the Kayak VR game has anyone played it on PC or Quest? Also any other hidden gems in the launch line up?

I believe Rez is available for PSVR2. Do. Not. Skip. That.

Quick Q - the on sale (£43) version of GT7 will get the VR update won’t it? Don’t need some special version? Thanks!

That’s correct, just don’t opt for the cheaper £34 version which is PS4 only, because, Sony
