VR is a niche hobbyist pursuit for people with lots of disposable income & spare room,

Not sure I agree on the spare room bit, it doesn’t really need much space, but it’s certainly niche, and hence priced accordingly.

You’re probably right, but with PC as long as it’s “VR ready” i.e. powerful enough, you could pair it with a Quest 2 and have the entire PC VR library available to you, and it probably wouldn’t cost much more, and there’s no cables.

But the Quest 2 is old tech now, the visual fidelty in the PSVR 2 is going to be a massive leap over the Quest 2. Also, you still need a high end PC, like £1500 on top to get the best quality.

The price of PSVR 2 is about right if you ask me.

Psvr was £399 at launch in 2016 . Without move controllers . Factor that in and PSVR2 is actually cheaper in real terms; £399 + £70 = £479.99, which is £589 adjusted for inflation.

Handy info for those of us trying to justify paying this stupid amount of money for a toy that you will play with for 3 months , most of which will be spent showing it to friends,  and then decide it’s too much of a faff .

EDIT: mind bending  justification was based on incorrect launch price, thanks @Clipper. Updated, slightly less convincing justification posted below

A lot of people had to buy a PS Camera at launch, too. Myself included.

This is now a bargain! Sort of. Not really. Where’s my email, Sony!

Was well up for this but will probably leave it for now. As well as the price will also have a 1 month old baby by then, probably not the ideal time to dive into VR.

Perfect time mate , all they do at that stage is shit,  eat and sleep . Boring as arseholes.

Given the specs I think that's an extremely reasonable price for the tech you're getting. Especially if you compare to higher end vr helmets on pc. Still a buttload of money of course, but realistically was anyone expecting Sony to sell these at a heavy loss?

Not without proper software support. Seriously, the lack of BC is the dealbreaker here. That line-up is not good enough.

Yup. I've really enjoyed PSVR and was all up for this. I'll certainly get it eventually but the lack of BC has totally frozen my interest and it's about 150 more than I was expecting. A new Astrobot game will inevitably push me over the line but having to keep my old headset and my failing Move controllers active to play my large library of old PSVR games is massively disappointing and as you say, the lineup they've announced just isn't good enough to justify that level of outlay day one.

On the flip side, the tech does look great but if they're blocking me from my original library, then I'll be jumping on board later, so the library has chance to mature.

I think the price is reasonable, if you consider a valve index alone is £1k then you need a gaming PC on top then it’s about right, and should be a better experience as well. Sure it’s out of reach of a lot of people, but the price will only come down.

I hope it will do PC VR as well, I’ve wanted a new headset for ages which doesn’t need external tracking lighthouses. If it can work then the OLED screens and eye tracking will be awesome!

Surely surely we will see older games patched to be PSVR2 compatible. I don’t know how much work that involves but it seems like madness all round to not offer that ready made library to potentially brand new customers who didn’t own the first one. No Man’s Sky is getting a release so I’m sure others will follow.

My experience of PSVR1 was that it was pretty good but I didn’t like how cut off I felt from the rest of the world while using it. Felt weird being in my living room and having absolutely no idea what was going on around me, so could only handle it in small doses. I don’t think l’ll be rushing to spend £550 on this.

It was always going to be about 500 quid, with the recent Sony console price change, £530 seems to be around what I’d expect. It’s a bit rich for me though, appreciating the tech is great and it’ll be great, no killer apps that appeal, I think I’m out.

*Unless they announce full game compatibility with GT7, then I’m day 1

It’s too steep for me to just get it day one for FOMO / new toy reasons, it’s hit the need for a killer app - GT7 running on it or Astrobot sequel would do it.

Like most I was hoping for £400 but thought it could end up at £599 so it’s not as bad as I feared but not the ‘bargain’ I dared to hope for, with the pads included I guess it stacks up against the original price….

Already on the justification train!

I was 100% all in on this, and looking forward to it sooooo much - but holy crap when I saw this (this is in Aussie dollars btw)...

"The PSVR 2 Call of the Mountain Bundle will run you (deep breath) $959.95, and includes everything found in the standard bundle plus a copy of Horizon: Call of the Mountain."

... I'm really starting to rethink. That's a lot more than the cost of the PS5 itself, which is quite honestly, batshit crazy to me. 🤔

I got PSVR at release and am definitely at the higher end of the "interest in vr games" scale, but I'm out at that price. Not totally Sony's fault, to be honest, I'm out on basically any product that has an RRP that was set after the yen went to shit compared to the dollar. 60,000 yen for a PS5 and then 75,000 yen for the headset...

Not getting PSVR2 basically ensures I'll be staying PC only this gen as it was the main reason I would have considered a ps5.

I'll stick with my PC and Quest.

I'm sure the psvr2 will be better but to what extent? Slightly higher perceived resolution? Who cares? The problem with vr is lack of worthwhile content. That list of psvr2 launch games isn't exactly enticing when you've already played Alyx and various PC vr mods.

The early vr hype is pretty much gone now. I wouldn't be surprised if this thing flops, especially now that I've seen the price/announced games.

This is what I was saying earlier about PC. I think anyone invested enough in VR and willing to spend this amount of money would be willing to go the extra mile and go down the PC route because it’s way more flexible and has a bigger library, and has wireless solutions and so on.

For people on the fence who aren’t sure about which to go for, and they’re on a budget, well Quest is just way cheaper and standalone, and wire free.

I can understand them wanting to offer a more high end experience with fully formed games, and they clearly had a market for it with the first PSVR, so why oh why would you alienate all those customers who are already invested by not offering backwards compatibility? It should have been up there as one of if not the most important selling point.

Can you imagine now if the PS5 wasn’t backwards compatible with PS4? Madness.

PS5 is a fucking rip off across the board. £200 for the cheapest arcade stick, £210 for this fuckin thing, £45 for two lumps of plastic side plates, £70 games, £85 online service, what planet are they on. Can't wait for the PSVR2 pricing, probably have to sign up for some medical trial to afford that one
