PSVR2 - out now!

I wonder if they might go back on the decision, seems plenty of people are upset. I feel like a lot of games would work just fine with the new controllers, even though they are very different, because many VR titles offer quite simple levels of interactivity. I don't see how the change in tracking tech would be a dealbreaker either, surely games were abstracted enough away from the detail of how it worked that a shim could be put in place? Maybe some games literally wouldn't be playable without creating a version specifically for the new hardware. But that doesn't stop them from whitelisting all the other games. There aren't that many to go through and test.

It is a shitty way to go about it. Even if the tracking tech is too different (debatable) they could still let you run the old games if you kept the camera

The PSVR headset has lights on the front for tracking. PSVR 2 doesn’t, so keeping the camera wouldn’t be much use.

Tracking tech too different 🤣

Must be a nightmare for every VR dev having to code sensor level tracking for each platform out there.

Surely almost everything is using an API to give them positional information and there's no reason for this not to provide a compatibility layer for that. Warning that some games might suffer a few issues would be fine but this is just such a slap in the face for their fans.

Of course I'm sure offering support would cost Sony money but it's so "them". See an opportunity to make a joke or your own "for the players" tag line and take it.

I'm a big PSVR1 evangelist and I don't care at all that PSVR2 isn't backward compatible. It's pretty obvious even from what we've seen so far that it's a massive leap forward on all fronts (it's a much bigger jump than pancake PS4 > PS5), and they're going to be pushing it harder from the outset.

Everything that stands up in the PSVR1 library (which isn't much if we're being honest) will get ported quickly (and I expect Sony will be incentivising devs to do this).

As long as we get a 4K version of Paper Beast I'm happy.

If we finally get a space combat sim that doesn't look like a Thunderbirds episode running on a PS1 so much the better.

I'd love Skyrim with the new controllers but I suspect that ship has sailed now.

Lol, this is Bethesda we're talking about. If they think they can get money from it, they will. I'd be tempted to do go through it all again despite having it in VR on PC.

Ordinarily yes, but maybe not now that Microsoft owns them? Money on the table, though.

It's such a shame that Star Wars Squadrons died on its arse as a PS5/PSVR2 upgrade or sequel would seriously tempt me.

An even greater shame is Frontier not wanting to develop the VR aspect of Elite Dangerous. :(

Yeah - be nice if they could sort it out and do a Skyrim enhanced (something I think we'll see a lot of early doors). If Sony coughed up for it getting done, it's cash for them and they're not competing in the space anyway.

I'd be pretty surprised if there wasn't at least one Star Wars game over the life of the system.

The 'source' of that rumour seems like a whole lot of nothing. It's especially dubious given it's framed as Sony buying the publishing rights, which doesn't make any sense.

That said, I do think Alyx will come to PSVR2 as it's a sensible move for all involved. The only reason I wouldn't consider it a sure thing is because it's Valve, who will leave money on the table if they feel like it.
