How are the nreal airs in terms of comfort and resolution etc?

I have the old Sony HMZ t3 but it's only 720p and not very comfortable.

Like wearing a slightly heavier pair of Ray Ban Wayfarer, so, light and comfortable. 1080P 60FPS Oled screens.

I like them a lot, great for Steam Deck, and plenty of other things too of course.

It’s the only one to go for imho.

As someone who has had a PSVR and a Quest, it’s all the upgrades, the resolution, the haptics, triggers etc, that’s going to feel like a next gen event for me. The fact it releases the week of my birthday means I get to feel like a kid at Kristmas once again too :D

I’m having more of a dilemma about this than most gaming hardware I buy ;)

I have psvr and a quest/gaming pc setup. I want this because the hardware seems like a major upgrade but I think there’s a real chance it’s going to flop at this price and end up with a very lackluster library, and that puts me off preordering. Without big games that take advantage of the upgraded visuals etc, what’s the point of all that fancy hardware?

If it worked with PC at least there’d still be that option if if flops and the bigger PlayStation vr games dry up/ it just ends up as a quest 2 port player.

At least there are modders keeping PCVR on life support regardless of the non-existent VR support from big companies . If this thing isn’t a commercial success it will be a paperweight in a couple of years or at best an overspecced headset for playing low budget indie/rhythm games.

I got my ps5 adapter for psvr 1 in the post yesterday and tried a couple of games. Some games look extremely good in the original headset with the resolution bump the ps5 provides (a couple of dreams experiences have extremely impressive/sharp visuals on ps5 whereas dreams on ps4 was a blurry mess). I think Sony might have made the wrong decision for this point in time by so heavily prioritizing specs over affordability.

I wonder if the Resi 8 upgrade will be free? I already own NMS and I think that one is (free). They’ll be the two I go for at launch anyway and possibly that Star Wars game, because, Star Wars.

Also do we know yet if any games will come as boxed versions?

Sony are going to have to pull out all the stops next year when it comes to showing new titles or adding patches to existing games. So I would expect a new Astro Bot, GT support, and surely a Last Of Us game or support for the existing games would be a good fit.

Like other are saying the hardware looks absolutely stunning, but of the 40+ games we know of that are in development, only a handful really show it off and most are ports.

No chance. LoU are games played purely from the third person perspective, with gameplay and systems designed around that perspective. That simply will not translate to VR, the same with the likes of Uncharted. I have to ask, have you experienced anything in VR yet, like on the Quest or PSVR1?

There’s also stuff like Hellblade VR on steam.

I’d love to see some of Sony’s AAA library get similar VR headset support even if it just involved playing with the dualsense. Unfortunately I’m sure Sony are aware by now that there is a large contingent of VR enthusiasts and games journalists who would lose their shit about that because “not a true vr experience” and others who’d write long negative articles about how it made them feel nauseous, so it will almost certainly never happen.

Why are they?
The situation is no different as with psvr. If you are expecting a regular stream of triple A titles you are going to be disappointed. There will be lots of games , with the very occasional block buster. Sony first party support will be sporadic. We’ll get a blood and truth sequel , an Astro or sequel , and a few other things.

tlou as it stands would not work in VR. You would need a ground up game as per horizon.

for VR to really work is has to be designed as a vr game , unless it’s a game presented in the first person,  in which case it’s an easier fit. ( no man’s sky etc)

So do a 3rd-person game in VR? It's worked before.

Astrobot, which is absolutely in my top 5 VR games, was designed specifically for VR.  Games like The Last of Us and Uncharted can't simply be converted/updated for VR.

Only a bit and a long time ago, on Gear VR (Samsung) but whilst I get what you are saying, the same could be said of Horizon, so I don’t think it’s unlikely we won’t see at least something LOU related in VR at some point. Would tie in nicely with the TV series too :)

Edit. I get what you guys are saying though, that it’s not as easy to implement VR for a third person and would require a lot of reworking.

Can anyone who has played that Star Wars game comment on their opinion of it? I’m not expecting it to be amazing but for someone like me who hasn’t really played anything in VR it looks like a good introduction.

Your edit shows you do at least understand the issue. :) The Horizon VR game is made for VR, it's completely separate from Aloy's adventures in ZD and FW (though I think Aloy does feature as an NPC). A VR Last of Us game would actually be amazing*, but there's absolutely no chance of LoU 1&2 being released/remade on VR any time soon unless there's serious appetite for it from Naughty Dog.

*Imagine having to cover your mouth so that a nearby clicker won't hear you breathing. Half Life Alyx does exactly this with a particular monster in that game.

I feel like TLOU could work, I dunno. Probably wouldn't scale particularly well on higher difficulties though, due to the AI behaviour and the pace of things when shits flying off (HL Alyx made the combine fairly passive as it's harder to take enemies like that on in VR).

I'm disappointed with Sony's showing for this though. The quality of the hardware is not in doubt, despite the disappointment that there's no wireless option. I actually think the way forward for VR is to embrace the niche status and go with smaller scale titles like Walking dead (speaking in terms of budget, not in terms of the complexity of WD which is a lot compared to most VR) and/or lots of hybrid VR games like the Resident Evil ones. They won't be as good as pure VR games but RE4 was still a ton of fun on quest

That's kind of my point though - not a conversion or update, but creating a new 3rd-person game in the LoU universe that's as tailored for VR as Astro was.

I would *love* even just a small VR episode along the lines of Left Behind.

I can’t wait for Resi 8 now. I always felt like I wasn’t playing the game to its full potential with Resi 7 knowing that it was available in VR.

I just want more stuff that's designed from the ground up for VR like Fisherman's Tale - which, while short, totally understands what's special about VR and the opportunities it offers to do something that makes you grin from ear to ear.

Walking Dead: Saints and Sinners is one of the top rated ones. Sorta an immersive sim with timed questlines, lots of crafting elements, but also stealth and very violent physics for sticking knives in the zombos heads.

found it a bit intense for VR tbh tho, in terms of how difficult it was. PSVR2 is getting the sequel at launch so hopefully they have better options for accessibility, cause replaying sections over and over in VR is way more annoying than on TV.

Eurogamer timestamp for the new Walking Dead

What were/are the best VR games? On any platform I mean.

Half Life Alyx is the absolute best. Its not even a contest.

Skyrim is surprisingly fantastic in VR, but we likely won't see that on PSVR2 (would fucking love to be proved wrong).

Beat Saber is still an amazng and fun experience while also providing some cardio exercise.

Elite Dangerous on PC is still fantastic in VR and it's criminal that we'll never see it on PSVR.

Many driving games too, but I'll highlight Assetto Corsa Competizione, and Project Cars 2.

Let’s hope it was already agreed before the Microsoft buyout as I’ve never played it but always thought it looked decent.

I’ve bought Skyrim 3 different times (360, Switch, PC) a 4th in VR would be my last time surely?

A Fisherman's Tale is simply fantastic - lasts about two hours but it's so brilliantly done.

I'd kill for Skyrim with the new controllers.

And what were the best PSVR games? I only really heard about Astro Bot but never really got in on the whole PSVR conversation, not being an owner.

I have revised my list for launch games I’d like now anyway after watching those videos.

NMS

RE8

The Walking Dead (this looks amazing)

Star Wars

I’m hoping the RE8 update is free, or pretty cheap.

Oof, I knew I'd forgotten something! Astro-bot is right up there. NMS is awesome too.
