I can’t do 30fps any more.

I told my mate who knows nothing about anything to try Spidey at 60fps and he said “hmmmm yeah it’s slightly smoother I guess but it doesn’t look as good”

He went back to 4k 30fps

Some people are just a bit strange

I remember going round my friends house and he goes "should we play some left 4 dead?" and he started it up and you could tell he'd just been playing all these years at the default resolution. It was really blurry.

I was like "woah, hang on I'll change that for you"

and he was like "aw, no man, I don't like fannying about, I just wanna play"

I told him "it'll literally take seconds", changed it to his monitors native resolution "Look, can you see how much sharper that is?"
Turned off vsync for him, "here, now try. Try looking around, you see how much snappier that is?"

He just shrugged, couldn't see or feel the difference at all. Some people are just like that.
They genuinely can't tell the difference.

He did say that he was hitting more shots than normal, but he honestly couldn't see the difference with the resolution change.

When I built my current PC I was aiming for performance over resolution and opted to go 1440p. Playing games like The Division at 60fps was just so nice compared to 30fps on the PS4. But I guess if all you have been playing this last decade has been PS3/PS4 or 360/XB1 then 30fps just feels normal.

Me and a mate had the same Samsung pebble or whatever it was. 720p

was on 360 and years after owning it we found We hadn’t had it on screen fit so the picture was slightly zoomed and a bit blurray.

Really HDMI should fix all this shit one day. We already have hdmi changing game mode now.

I reckon there’s millions of gamers out there playing with motion smoothing on and up to 100ms input latency.

I think the thing that’s hit a lot of people in this thread is just how fast the turn around has been. I was fine with 30fps. Now just a few months on...I hate it. It’s quite stunning to see so many people say the exact same thing at the same time.

I'm actually amazed I didn't realise PGR3 was 30fps. I didn't cotton onto fps at all until Call of Duty 4, despite spending ages as a PC gamer in the late 90s trying to get games run at an acceptable 25fps (I was doing well if I managed that, I thought back then).

A few people saying that 60fps was quite common on the PS2. My memory of the first couple of generations of 3D games were that they were quite juddery. I still remember the Gamecube Rogue Squadron review in Edge lamenting that the new consoles hadn't brought smoother gameplay.

Was stuff like Virtua Racing and Daytona 60 in the arcades?

Even if games where you can switch between 30 and 60? You still can't see how much smoother it is?

I only got a PS5 the other days I might not have had “the awakening” yet.

Battlefield 1 does feel better, as does Wipeout but I don’t think you can switch those back to 30 so I can’t check.

It’s weird, I’m not some luddite that will leave on motion flow or use the scart lead with the 360. I’ll annoy my other half fiddling with the tv settings for days after we bought a new TV and I’d call out my dad for watching F1 in standard definition even though he paid for the HD package. and yet...I had to google if Death Stranding had a patch or not.

They have both been 60fps since they came out on PS4 I believe.

I rest my case!

It certinally aimed for 60 and on a base PS4 sometimes hit it, pro had plenty of frame drops - it was never a 30fps game and I’m not sure if it’s because I’ve jumped form PS4 to Seriex X (maybe one x version was always better) but BF1 and BF5 look better and run better now!

I fired up battlefield 1 last night.

OH MY GOD WHAT IS WRONG WITH THE LOADING TIMES!

I deleted it.

it’s second only to GTA V

You bet - that’s why it was so disappointing when Daytona on the Saturn was only capable of running at 20 frames, or whatever it was - especially with that horrible pop-in. No one expected arcade quality, but Ridge on the PlayStation was running at 60 (I had to look that up), it was hugely embarrassing.

DF Retro did a great video about it.

No, it wasn't, it ran at 30 fps. Years later, they included a 60 fps version with Ridge Racer Type 4

Thank you for the correction, I knew that didn’t sound right!

Ridge Racer on PlayStation - arcade comes home; Daytona USA on Saturn - slide show. Goes to show what a difference 10 frames can make.

I agree, at low fps count, a 10 frames difference is a world. However, I find the "30fps is now unplayable" stance in this thread way overstated.

Of course, I prefer 60 fps when available, but I don't think twice about a game being 30fps, I just play it without problems.

I remember being disappointed with Sega Rally on the Dreamcast.  The framerate was all over the place.  I vaguely remember an unlock framerate code you had to enter on the title screen to get 60fps but the framerate was still shit

I've been going back and forth my kids playing Grounded, one on the XSX and the other on the XB1. Holy crap. When it's not the same content, I agree it's very much easier to simply accept 30.

50hz only in PAL-land too, what a let down

Forced me to spend lots on import consoles over the years, that's for sure. Playing Final Fantasy VII in 60hz was almost like a new game compared to the slog the UK release was.

PS2 had quite a few 60fps titles it is true. Japanese devs and Sony first party did a lot of them. The greatest home console exclusive racing game ever created being one of them (even if the PS2 original suffers from some slowdown compared to the later other console ports).

60fps was actually a selling point back in the 1990s:

Virtua Racing/Virtua Fighter were only 30fps, they needed Model 2 hardware to push to 60fps.

Daytona was 60fps, but Virtua Racing was 30fps in the arcade.  Similar titles from the era (Namco's Winning Run for example) was 15fps so Virtua Racing looked amazing in comparison.

I’m normally ok with 30fps for slower paced games and retro stuff, but newer racing games have to be 60fps. The difference between the “high detail” and “frame rate” options in Dirt5 are huge on my OneX and daughters’ Series X.
Mind you, I’d rather have a constant 30fps than an inconsistent 60fps, which is what the “high detail” mode seems to be. It’s horrible!

  • 3 weeks later...

With Prey, Dishonored 1 and Wreckfest aboard the 60fps train, the likelihood of me ever going back to 30fps games is diminishing rapidly. There's actually only a small handful of last-gen games that I'm waiting on now - Dishonored 2, Arkham Knight, Red Dead 2 are the obvious ones, with TLOU2 and HZD on the Sony exclusive side. I'm starting to wish I'd not bought Watch Dogs Legion now - I like the game but it's the only new release I can think of is locked at 30. That, to me, already feels last gen despite being able to see my reflection in the shop windows of London.

I know the smart money seems to be on this "why not both?" golden period of performance vs picture quality coming to an end as the generation beds in, but I for one would think long and hard about buying a game that didn't have a 60fps option. The more I get used to 60, the less likely I am to go back. I think we're now in the land previously occupied by PC players where anything less than 60 is considered a major compromise.

I'm not fully round to the premise of this thread but have moved a long way towards getting there with the arrival of my X. The PS5 gave me a taster but no game hooked me yet, but playing a few gamepass games in last few days has sold me on the premise, especially Horizon 4 which looks stunning and feels so silky smooth.

So much so that after playing it for an hour or so last night when I went back to tv I had to check that old fashioned HD ch4 wasn't actually an SD channel as it looked so blurry to my eyes.

4k 60fps or GTFO.

Dont try FH3 as while I’m fine with the visuals it’s just horrible to play at 30 and I only have it still installed with the hood it will get boost mode updated!

FH3 was the one that saw me give up on the series as the resolution and frame rate meant I couldn't always see where the courses were actually going, it was an official turning point where I became my dad.

Not had that problem at FH4 at all its all so crisp.

The SX has definitely made 30fps harder to stomach for me, depending on the game - doesn't matter for strategy games or slow paced stuff like snowrunner.

I've noticed I'm far, far less sensitive to frame rates on my switch lite. It must be the small screen, stuff like Hyrule Warriors Age of Calamity rarely even hits 30 but it just doesn't bother me where it would really spoil it for me on a TV.

I've been, for a long time on the side of "30 fps is totally fine unless it's super fast action"... but I too have been spoiled recently.

This was especially true after playing through the PS5 version of Control and enjoying it about a thousand times more than my PS4 play through. It's so much better at 60 fps.

I basically want 60 fps for everything now :/

VRR on the series X is also amazing. Games that would drop frames now basically look like a perfect 60 fps.
