I can’t do 30fps any more.

Guys, everyone knew PCs did everything faster, and we knew it cost more. This isn't some revelation, just appreciation of the tech being cheap enough to make 60 FPS commonplace.

I thought 50/60fps was the standard until after the 16 bit era?

Yes, you've always been able to brute force performance with better hardware, but Nintendo mostly tried to target 60fps with their games on weaker consoles each gen.

It was a conscious decision made by the developers of each game. Once the arms race for the best looking, prettiest 3d games had been declared, performance was chucked out the window. They decided that 30fps was enough.

Sure. Now there's spare oopmh to do that in 60 FPS. Well, unless you opt for RT or something.

It looks shite, but then I’m not a big open world fan generally. I thought it garnered a reputation for being quite mediocre in that field in any case.

It has a good reputation for its dynamic approach to zombie horde management; a heady blend of combat, stealth and flight.

Unfortunately the characters are absolutely unbearable, particularly Captain Stream of Consciousness the protagonist, and the way they've made your bike guzzle fuel like my dad chugging beers at a wake as a way to enforce tension just renders the biking tedious, plus I find zombie narratives actively uninteresting, so after a little over 10 hours I sacked the whole thing off. If you can get over those aspects, though, it's well regarded (albeit not particularly by the specialist press).

Well if you don't like the type of game then sure it's going to be shit

Just couldn’t quite believe mad @Thorbeing affronted that a critically lauded modern classic such as Persona 5 should be included alongside fare such as Days Gone, as if that were some kind of gold standard, when the reality is Days Gone is far less enticing a prospect than P5 for many players, myself included. This all demonstrates that the inclusion of both in the PS+ collection is for the sake of diversity surely.

Isn’t Days Gone supposed to be utter shite whereas Persona 5 is supposed to be a modern classic?

In the Overall Games of the [2010s] poll, P5 came 36th, and DG didn't make the top 100.

Don't blame me, blame forum consensus. :hat:

Oh totally agree, it would never have been possible to please everybody dude.

I don't like open world games as a rule, nor do I go out of my way to seek out post apocalyptic type anything, have never seen Sons of Anarchy, but Days Gone was brilliant and probably my second favourite Sony exclusive on the PS4 (after Bloodborne obvs). And that was at 30fps - if it weren't such a big game I'd probably have another go through at 60fps.

I have precisely zero interest in Persona 5 though.

Even back in the day I knew the difference between slick liquid golden butter like F-Zero X compared to Perfect Dark, but I didn’t have the lingo down to articulate what the difference was.

Your prose always cracks me up mate, I love it. I haven’t even played or seen F-Zero X and it’s my favorite game now

Oh, is it styled after Sons of Anarchy as well?  Jesus wept, the stench of utter bollocks grows stronger.

Well it has biker gangs.

I mean, on the flip side, I look at Persona 5 and it looks exactly like a million other JRPG's I also have zero interest in. If you wanna play the judgement game...

Similarly, going back even further the same thing's been going on since at least the late 80s, courtesy of the ST and Amiga; routinely the Amiga pushed 50fps while the ST struggled to maintain 30fps. See e.g. Turrican II, with its smooth movement on Amiga vs the more restricted framerate of the ST:

Just a fun thing people would mock your ST for, there; you know, if they weren't slagging off its sound chip or the smaller range of colours.

(The Chaos Engine was one of the more noticeable games with its high demands and multiscrolling playfield, but a quick search didn't bring up a comparison video to use)

Man, that game glides in motion. I just wanted to bring it up in this thread since some posts were hinting that the difference between 30 & 60fps was a modern concern. When you play F-Zero X you understand that it must have always made a difference. But like I say, I was just never able to articulate what the difference was.

My cousins and their in-laws all grew up playing N64 together, and often at family do’s someone will hook up the N64 to revisit some of our old favourites. Everyone gasping to play Goldeneye but I’m sad to say I just can’t face it now. I sit out everything until F-Zero X gets rammed in the slot :eyebrows:

Persona 5 looks incredible and like no other game I can think of. Jet Set Radio maybe comes close, one of the most stylistically legendary games ever made. I’ve not played it, so it may play quite generically in terms of systems, but certainly the main reason I want to play it is because it looks like fucking Cowboy Bebop or something.

Honestly I wouldn’t know FPS if it bit me on the dick, I can happily play something on the PS5 / Series X then fire up a game from yesteryear and I can honestly say it’s one thing that doesn’t bother me at all

You’re probably firing up F-Zero X after playing Control Ultimate Edition at RT/30. You lucky bastard.

It having a solid fucking gold banger of a soundtrack also helps.

Days Gone had bad reviews and everybody was 100% certain it would bomb.

Then people bought it, kept playing it, got others to buy it and... well, it’s a successful game these days. Most of the ‘informed gamers’ seem determined to call it disastrous though.

Haven’t played it myself. I was genuinely surprised to see it take off amongst friends with some of them rating it highly and pretty stoked with the idea of getting to play it in 60fps on PS5.

It has merit.

The only time I've noticed the difference is going to a remastered version of Dark Souls and it feeling off.

Consistency of frame rate and frame pacing bothers me. But even then I lived through the N64 mostly everything is great.

By mid to end gen there'll be a huge amount of 30FPS games again.

The only reason I haven’t started P5 yet is because I’m toying with spending actual cash on the Royal edition, even though I’ve got the vanilla version sat right there, ready to play for free. Whereas with Days Gone, I’d rather watch my dad fall down the stairs, in whatever framerate is available.

Both are great and both are about as apples & oranges as you could get.

Yeah, it's great that on console we're now being given the option to choose performance over pretty if that's our preference, instead of the devs making that decision for us. In this way console gaming is becoming more like pc gaming and it's a great thing.

Part of the reason I struggled moving into he HD era was the frame rates. So many games I played on PS2 were 60fps.

Going from GT4 to PGR3 was horrible on the eyes. It wasn't worth the supposed resolution increase. It looked like a flick book in comparison and racers are vital to be 60.

I don't hate 30 for all games of course. But for some reason it feels so hard on HD games. Maybe it's the TV size. Of the level of detail makes or appeared more jerky, even with motion blur. I mean, games like Ridge Racer 4, as stunning as it is, only has limited detail.

And that's Persona 5 uninstalled. The actual game was intriguing, but the lack of frequent save points is a huge deal breaker. If I want to stop playing, I should able to do so without having to fear replaying entire sections again.

And this is why quick resume is a killer feature.

Days Gone is decent, neither as bad as the initial reviews made out nor as good as the revisionist take suggests. It's very much in the same vein as lots of other Sony games - a house style which I find a little bland.

Persona 5 is one of the best games on the system. Back on topic, the new sequel/action rpg spin off, Persona 5 Strikers, runs at 60fps on base ps4.
