I can’t do 30fps any more.

No need, I have an Xbox so most of them will have a boost anyway :) I've replayed a bunch of games lately boosted on Xbox and it was :chefskiss:

Yeah, I'll be very happy when I finally upgrade, especially if there's more games they go the extra mile to get running at 60 like they did with Dark Souls 3.

The WiiU and early Switch generation was bolstered around 60fps being the standard for their first-party output. It's a shame that changed.

Mario Kart 8 is still one of the best looking games ever, and like stuff such as LttP I doubt it'll age at all.

The first party stuff on Switch has still been mostly decent though. BOTW was built for the Wii U originally and massively ambitious for both systems so I gave that a pass. The only real stinkers are Link Between Worlds (what happened!?) and the various Warriors games - but those have strong EDF style energy to them anyway so it doesn't bother me (I actually played FE:Warriors on 3DS).

I really really hope so. They barely started the boost initiative so you'd think there's plenty more to come. Dishonored 2 is the most notable absentee as a first party title, but it would be great if they started boosting games like RDR2 also since R* ain't gonna patch shit. But there's a very real possibility that R* will cockblock all boosts with the idea of releasing barebone ports at full price on the new generation.

The Ratchet and Clank 40 fps on a 120 hz display is the absolutely fucking business I might add.

It's enough to get away from the choppy look of 30 fps while delivering a much more responsive feeling game.

Ooh, I didn't even know about this. Barely touched the game but it looks and runs great this way, this is may actually be the best option. I would love something similar with Miles Morales.

Is a console 60FPS update for Red Dead 2 unlikely to happen, then? I've been waiting for one before I go back to it. Might have to pick it up on PC instead.

Honestly, nobody knows. Maybe. There could be technical reasons preventing it. R* could be blocking it because R* gonna R*. Or maybe it will come at some point.

I think the best way to ensure it happens is for you to just start playing it now, you shall see it will get boosted when you're halfway through :)

I prefer it to the 60 fps of Performance RT, as you make far fewer visual compromises and the game looks and feels great, and far better than 30 fps.

I'm glad you have that option if you like it, but you're mad. It's a shade better than 30, but still feels like dragging a camera through gravel.

Cool, I think you're mad for picking the 60 fps RT mode over the 40 one for the hit on image quality and reflections when the 40 fps mode feels totally excellent.

I even played 2/3rds of the game in Perf RT and I'd take the 40 fps version any-day. But I'm glad you and I and everyone have all these options if you like them.

I never used to be that big a framerate person provided it was 30fps - but I have noticed now that I quite often play games on a 120" screen that I can get tired eyes if it's a fast moving 30fps game (slow moving games it's fine).

I was playing Doom Eternal at 60fps on it for ages yesterday and it was amazing.

I can manage 30fps in certain game types if it is very consistent, after a bit the eyes adjust and it looks smooth. A 3rd person eurojank rpg ,totally fine if not ideal.

Anything first person, or racing or side scrolling though I am totally spoilt and can't stand it.

Fwiw I eventually settled on normal performance. I found the higher resolution at 60 looked better to me than lower resolution at 60 but with some fancy lighting. At least in Ratchet specifically.

As you say, it's good that there are options.

Normal being… 30 fps?

A little off topic and more retro-focused, but do you know what I can't do? Fucking software emulated VC games on an LCD screen with Bluetooth controllers. The only way you're muddying that chain further is by heavily intoxicating yourself.

Compared to FPGA/real, wired, hardware on a CRT the difference in response is absolutely fucking staggering. It's a way bigger gulf than 30fps vs 60fps. Old games were never designed with input latency in mind, and that's before we get to pin sharp displays and the associated upscaling.

It saddens me somewhat when I hear about people playing Super Mario World, or similar, for the first time ever via. the aforementioned.

Just like 60fps it's sometimes easy to forget how these nice things were all standard, once upon a time.

Right now on SGDQ there are people doing close to world record times using the VC version of games played using a wireless Wiimote. Rondo for example.

while I love OG hardware on a CRT, a small amount of lag, you can totally get used to after a short period of time and it becomes along nothing, much like playing a 30 fps game.

Absolutely. You could adapt in order to offset your inputs slightly, or not adapt in the slightest if that's all you're used to. That would actually be easier to do if you're following regimented patterns and set plays repeatedly. Let's also not forget that save-states are a speedrunner's best friend - if you want to repeat a five second section over several months until you've perfected it you can only do that with the aid of software emulation. MiSTer's NES core does save-states now but that's a very recent development.

Try flitting between the two... It's massively jarring. Super Mario Kart being the worst example I've found. The original is so tight that moving over to the VC version downstairs makes me feel drunk/sick as I swerve all over the place. With Super Mario World I'm either falling down holes by pressing jump far too late, or jumping into Goomba faces and dying that way.

Whenever I try VC downstairs for convenience I usually turn it off after five minutes and come upstairs instead. Back before I had this setup I'd just turn it off and do something else entirely. :(

Wasn’t the BOTW2 trailer 60fps?

I realise I might not be the best judge, I’m currently playing Firewatch…on the switch.

The original game just about manages 30fps, unless Nintendo have performed the impossible, then the sequel will also be '30fps'

Input latency is roughly halfway between the 60 and 30Hz modes so it's a decent bump to gamefeel. Moving to 120Hz refresh would have helped with that. Some measurements at 6min20s into this video:

Speaking of GDQ, I love when they specifically move the camera to avoid slowdown on N64 games like Blast Corps and Starfox.

Also the opposite in Breath of the Wild when they look towards the towns when flying across the map to increase their speed.

Thought I’d try Omno but it seems to be in 30fps. Sorry lads, not in 2021. Too much other stuff to put up with that shit.

It's not 30fps. I think the first opening vista really tanks the frame rate. There's a setting to turn off v-sync. I turned off the setting and for the most part on the series X the frame rate holds up. I would stay with it as it's a really beautiful game.
