Gotta applaud Capcom for making these games more accessible; Pro Gear seeing an official release is something I never thought I'd see. The bundles are all pretty good too. Great job.

People complaining about lag is just a modern reality though, especially in light of MiSTer users who already have most of these games in literal near perfect form, and are expecting CPS-2 games imminently.

This is a very nicely presented collection, and I'm tempted by it, but I wish they'd lavish the level of extra detail that the SNK collection opted for in terms of giving historical context, development details and extra artwork. Feels like that could be something they used the weird earned in-game currency for; unlockable images etc. instead of just being a weird aggregate leaderboard.

I remember reading Frank Cifaldi's accounts of the sweat and tears and unpaid overtime that went into putting all those extra bits into the SNK Collection. The budgets assigned to these retro compilations are traditionally miniscule, the absolute bare minimum to get product out the door. Anything extra you see is likely because someone worked hard in their own time to put it there.

I also think it's totally fair to point out the about turn some of these games giants have taken with regards to emudevs. They owe them a huge debt of gratitude for preserving their legacy.

What happened with that ripping off the emulator thing in the end? I remember chat about it a while ago and someone had worked out they were using an unlicensed emu, right? Did they get away with it in the end?

Entirely, because who was going to actually do anything?

Absolutely, although at least this time they've licenced MAME (although it's not used for everything on there).

IIRC, like Pac-Land, I think it's one of those arcade games with a refresh rate that's slightly below 60hz.

I haven't noticed any lag playing 1943 in docked mode. I don't like that I can't zoom the display like I could with the 360 version. $66AU is a wee bit expensive but when you break it down per game it's a fair price. Is this coming to any other platforms?

But if it's open source why would they need to license it?

Virtually everything open source has a licence, just because it's open source doesn't mean you can use it commercially, or even distribute it without permission.

I'm slightly surprised someone who worked for an organisation whose entire business was licencing doesn't know this.

For instance, the very popular GPLv3 licence.

Quote

You may convey a work based on the Program, or the modifications to produce it from the Program, in the form of source code under the terms of section 4, provided that you also meet all of these conditions:

a) The work must carry prominent notices stating that you modified it, and giving a relevant date.

b) The work must carry prominent notices stating that it is released under this License and any conditions added under section 7. This requirement modifies the requirement in section 4 to “keep intact all notices”.

c) You must license the entire work, as a whole, under this License to anyone who comes into possession of a copy. This License will therefore apply, along with any applicable section 7 additional terms, to the whole of the work, and all its parts, regardless of how they are packaged. This License gives no permission to license the work in any other way, but it does not invalidate such permission if you have separately received it.

d) If the work has interactive user interfaces, each must display Appropriate Legal Notices; however, if the Program has interactive interfaces that do not display Appropriate Legal Notices, your work need not make them do so.

Unless you have a separate agreement with the original copyright holder, if Capcom used something GPL they'd need to open source the entire collection and include prominent notices of what they modified and how.

Hell, Doom's been open source for over a decade at this point, the WAD files are still copyrighted and banned from distribution.

Gave Progear a whirl just now - can't get over the input lag I'm afraid (docked, scanlines on, playing on LG C9 so good response rate, using wireless pro controller).

I do think that if they're gonna ask for money on these releases, they ought to get the lag sorted.

I thought Capcom got permission from one of the FPBA Devs to use their emulator.  The issue was that it was one individual from a team who didn't have the authority to make the decision or something like that.

Bloody hell, Ghosts and Goblins is ridiculous . Even with rewinds.

Ah, well that's actually where I got the specific piece of knowledge that caused me to ask that question. Because I know there is a version of MAME (0.54 I want to say... Might be wrong) that does allow it to be distributed absolutely freely, for commercial purposes even -

https://opensource.org/licenses/GPL-2.0

So I am thinking that perhaps Capcom used a different version - which is certainly naughty.

I'm a bit confused as to why they would, though, as the OS MAME runs every Capcom game I've ever tried on it, which is probably all of them, just fine, as far as I remember.

GPL-2 has the exact same licence term I quoted above regarding notices and releasing your version.

Yep, so they didn't get permission.

Agreed.  The second stage with the ladders is dreadful for getting on and off them.  Don't remember it being like that in the arcade.

Yes - it’s definitely laggy. That explains the ladder problem. I kept overshooting and missing when I wanted to climb a ladder. I hope they can improve the responsiveness otherwise I’m not shelling out at full price for any of the packs.

I can't buy anything :-) Well 1943 and Ghost's n Goblins for free. But it doesn't show me anything else. Lucky me.

I had the same issue since it launched, but then noticed the extra games were showing as "Available 17/02/21" despite it, well, being long past that. After rebooting to no avail, I figured perhaps something was awry with the date and time so went into settings and turned off the "Automatically set time" (or whatever it is) setting and then turned it back on to encourage a resync or something. It made sense at the time.

Starting the game back up then showed the packs finally! Or there was a problem with the eShop and it coincidentally fixed at the same point, I dunno. It all seemed a bit unlikely (both as a fix or as a coincidence), but I relate it on the off chance it helps.

I'm not experiencing lag at all. Having said that there was lag on the Mega Drive Mini and I didn't notice it on that, either.

Could be my telly. It's a rubbish and old LCD. I'm using "game mode" but it might still be laggy.

I don't notice lag in most games but with something like GnG, any lag makes it much harder.

Possibly, but it could also be that you're got far better reactions than me and you're noticing it. I think we'll mention that people are experiencing lag but it's not something we've noticed. The sound feels odd at times and I've noticed that Strider is really glitchy on the final stage, but I'm not sure if it's there and I've not noticed it as I've never tried to speedrun it before.

Same, I'm playing on a Lite and have played Ghosts n Goblins, Ghouls n Ghosts, Strider, Commando and Progear.

I bought everything and I’ve spent far and away most of my time on... Ghosts ‘n Goblins. You know, the one that comes free with it

Have a great time though. Like with the mini consoles it really makes me explore the limited selection whereas with other emulation options the temptation to download everything and ultimately play nothing unknown is usually irresistible. Yesterday’s chief discoveries were Pirate Ship Higemaru and Mega Twins. The latter is gorgeous. I remember seeing what I take to be the western MD port in Chiki Chiki Boys in the magazines of the day but had never played either before.

Unfortunately, having now tried, I can't do this. I use the mobile app for parental controls etc, and this means that the time has to be set automatically. Ah well, less money thrown at Capcom's direction, I guess ;)

I’ve only played the 2 freebies but I cant get on with the tiny screen sizes. I love my 1x1 pixel aspect but even I would advocate a fit to screen effect somehow.

Perhaps it just comes over badly because of the relative size of the switch itself.  I find I’m holdkng this huge console and staring at a tiny screen.

For comparison sake playing the same titles on my gbzero is glorious.

So I've bought this out of a nostalgia for the games, and a desire to play GIgawing and progears. But where am I spending my time? 1941. As a kid I played 1943, but this is way better. It's small in scope, just 6 stages, not bullet hell, so I can actually survive, and so I might have a chance at 50p'ing it (3 credits).

Great fun!

They have changed something. It works. Where's my wallet?
