Mario Golf Super Rush

I quite like this a nice solid Golf game with some extra Mario stuff on top, but not too much.  When I looked around the starting area & greens of the RPG section I noted that there were no Mario elements (hills with eyes, blocks, etc) aside from the characters but wasn't too put out by it.  It's just a nice 3D golf game which as i don't have any other examples of is fine by me.

I am saying this as someone who never played any other Mario Golf game though, so while it's possible some or all of those blow this one out of the water i'm happy with what i've got.

Here's a great review from Amazon Japan where the game sits steady at 3/5.

I'm so disappointed and sad.

The opposite of a real golf game in every way.

If you want to play a stoic golf game, don't buy it.

Anyway, it is annoying to be forced to play speed golf everywhere.

Even in adventure mode, you're forced to drive around the track in vain.

Do you need that to grow?

Let me develop purely on skill and score.

It's an interesting new element, but Speedgolf is a bonus, and it's too much of a push for something that should be a stand-alone game mode (at least that's what I thought it was in the PV and commercials).

Did Nintendo think this would be popular with people who wanted a golf game?

What people want when they buy a golf game is to be able to see the wind, the undulations in the ground and the grass, and to use a number of different clubs to get a high score on a real challenging course with precise timing and control.

If you want to play something like Speedgolf, why don't you record it for Mario Party and have it played there?

The course is designed to be played at speed, which means that the more clubs you use, the slower you go. What do you really want to do?

Also, all the characters' voices are annoying.

It's deafening, so just use subtitles.

Adventure mode also has a lot to complain about.

Getting around is annoying because the map is shit and confusing and NPCs get stuck.

I'm not saying it's fast travel, but couldn't they have done something about it?

And above all, the characters you can develop.

Where there are only Mii.

Why can't you develop Mario, a character in a way?

Let me play against Mario characters that I have developed to my liking.

The most critical thing about playing on the course is that it is difficult to see where you are going to fall.

The hole number display at the start of the course is right over the landing area and the semi-circular display to show carry and run makes it difficult to see the landing area at all.

Before that, you can't see where you're going to fall because you're rushed and you have to go fast.

You just have to decide on the power and press the button, and then the computer randomly decides on the blur, so a good shot is left to luck and not very pleasant at all.

The camera sucks too.

When you chip in or make a long putt, the camera doesn't follow the ball, so you don't zoom in, just hear a click in the distance and see the effect.

Of course, there is no replay function, so you can't watch your superplay again, or even once in the first place.

The ultimate moment was when I made a hole-in-one.

I didn't even know if I'd got in.

What? Did you just make a hole-in-one? That's what happened.

Are the developers real idiots for cutting out the good points of so many existing golf games?

Anyway, it's a golf game that is at the bottom of every aspect of perfection and is too stressful.

If you're frustrated because your reading or technique is not good enough, you're not.

I have to say that it's a crap game to be so frustrated by the game system and UI related issues.

Rating: 1 star out of 5

Why did they think Speed Golf was a good idea in Adventure mode? It's so bloody tedious. I'm generally slower to take shots than the AI so most of the time they race off ahead of me and I'm just slowly running to the ball after every shot. Yet time doesn't seem to factor into the score at all. What on earth is the point of this?

That, to me, is a huge WTF moment. If I take longer but finish in fewer shots, I win? Kinda takes the "speed" out of it. Just play Par golf and you'll be fine, if you hurry it and end up in Bowser course bunkers you're done.

I really quite enjoy the golf. I really quite dislike most of the stuff that I have to do to get to the golf.

It is definitely not "awful" but for a Nintendo exclusive it lacks polish and attention to detail which is disappointing. Most of the modes needed a lot more time in the oven. They should have been brave and focussed on the core golf game and the courses and maybe released the adventure mode as a later expansion once they had a clearer idea of what it should be.

I've played stuff like Paper Mario the Origami King and Captain Toad Treasure Tracker recently and this really suffers in comparison - no love or care for the property at all, very rushed, not what you expect from a first party game.

This is actually fun in multiplayer but I agree with @ChewMagma above me that it lacks polish. If Mario Tennis is anything to go buy we might be lucky and get a couple of content patches that brings the game closer to what we were expecting, that’d be great!

I have to wonder about the Donk city coming still and whether covid really buggered them up but they just released what they'd done so far.

I only noticed recently the whole intro is all about battle golf and that's even less of a part of the game than the speed golf.

There's something definitely not right about it as the "reward" for finishing the adventure golf is to be able to use your mii in battle golf. But there's no tournament or career or anything to the battle golf, despite the huge opening cinematic.

I've now totally finished it too, all characters with super clubs and at least -10 on all courses on championship tees. I still like the golf part of it though.

that would be the time to buy this, not now, imho.

Until then, I've reinstalled World Tour on my N3DS and I'm enjoying that so much more. Night and day.

The whole adding backspin, topspin is really poorly thought out. They have four face buttons.

Why not charge swing with A, then hit with A for normal swing, hit with B for backspin, x for forwardspin etc.

Instead it’s this weird combo system of a, double tap b, then a again to backspin a shot and it doesn’t really work very well. Also, curving shots is similarly obtuse.

Maybe they’ll patch in better controls like the did with Tennis Aces which did something similarly mental that somehow got through play testing.

A to start, set power with B (for backspin) then tap again for super backspin. A then AA for top.

In the older Mario Golfs it was A to start, B to set power then BB or BA for backspin/super backspin or AA or AB for top/super top. That was in addition to the analogue stick for setting the point where you'd strike the ball and all that.

Had a couple of rounds on New Donk Course. It's the same map/layout as it is in Odyssey from what I can tell and some holes are played between rooftops (and there are springboards to boost you and your ball up, too). Also got my first hole in 1 😎

They've also added a ranked mode and some improved descriptions of modes you'll see on boot up. Apparently more DLC planned, but I don't think they've said what it will be yet.

I’ve come to the conclusion that the adventure more is a bit naff - so much padding - and the standard mode where you actually get to use Mario and co is a lot more fun.

Still not sure what the parameters for upgrading clubs in this mode is, though.

I actually quite like that New Donk standard is all par 3s! Yet to try it online, but speed golf could be really fun. The inclusion of ranked is what brought me back, because there was nothing to do but grind for grinding's sake before now.

The monthly reward for picking yoshi colours was a bit weak but I still got myself to A- just for the hell of it.

And yeah new Donk city is crazy easy unless you play on the harder tees. First time playing it, using toadette for the first time,  -16.

I'm still amazed I can't play a season of golf against my favourite Mario characters. I really hope they keep adding to it but I'm sceptical that they'll bother.

So have the updates for this made it any better? Tempted whilst it’s £30 on Amazon. Probably never even unwrap it

Definitely. I've been happy enough with buying it at voucher price, but it's certainly got £30 worth in there. Especially if you ever get any local play sessions in.
