It takes the last 30 seconds doesn't it?

Oh well in that case I better have a look around on it. I didn't realise it did that too.

Fair enough, although personally I do like an action replay in game still.

The XC course over 9 holes at Ridgerock in Adventure Mode might be the least enjoyable thing I’ve ever played in a Nintendo game.

I didn't mind the 9, it was multiple failures on the 6 that drove me crazy. I genuinely think XC could be pretty great for multiplayer, it just felt so needless at the time in single-player. But seeing the paths people take, and learning the smartest shortcuts, would almost be a game in itself.

But, then, there are no replays! It's an astonishing oversight, as I can't think of any golf game where I couldn't watch shots again. It wouldn't even require a fully-functioning editing suite, just something simple so we can share our best shots.

I'm left feeling that we have an actually great golf game that won't reach the heights it could do because there are so many little annoyances wrapped around it. Why do I have to go back to Toad all the time? Just let me play whatever the current mode is once I've registered. Decisions like that are truly baffling.

Who wants to play in an inaugural forum tourney? Whilst we're still going through Adventure mode (or not, judging by responses) I would recommend the following rules: 18 holes of regular golf on Bonny Greens, no Miis, special shots allowed. Hopefully this should be as close to a 'normal' Mario Golf bit of golfing for the time being. Winner is the person with the lowest score out of everyone at the end! Depending on how many people want to play, results from this tournament may affect seedings of future tournaments. Quote me if you're in and say when you're available to play. :)

Me! As this format can be handled asynchronously, times don't matter so much as with a more traditional head-to-head knockout structure, and the beauty of the Switch is that I can be available for all of most evenings. I've recently been involved in a Facebook group for Golf Clash where players have kept things running over a whole year, guys all 50+ using Messenger chats and Challenge. It's quite the community!

I think just Solo Challenges are where this is at for me. Quite happy to just try and better my own scores (NOT TIMES!) on the courses because that bit is actual, proper fun. It's all the weird bullshit they've smothered it in elsewhere that's the problem.

You can't seem to change to the harder tees from the solo challenge option which is a shame though. I'm now doing that through the play golf menu.

I'd be up for a forum challenge however it might work though @tnman :) would it be post screen shot of best round within a time period or something? Count me in, however it's done.

Just played a leisurely round of normal golf against Wario, and thrashed him.

Why?  Because his putting was game-breakingly shite.  With putts of between four to ten feet, more often than not he'd aim at about forty-five degrees to the hole.

Really ruined the fun.

I am enjoying rush mode very much.

Usually this forum costs me money by people raving about games that haven’t been on my radar. But sometimes, just sometimes they do enough to stop me wasting money on less worthwhile games.

This is one of those occasions.

Thank you rllmuk

I don't know what people are sad about missing out on?

You can level up individual Mario world characters to unlock their different club sets (I haven't done this yet so don't know if they're unique or actually matter) which gives you a reason to play normal 18-hole rounds. The structure of the adventure mode is undeniably off but I've looked on the tasks as batshit challenges which fits the theming and have been happy enough plodding through them. Yes, this game is probably a 7/10, but it is a good 7/10! This is golf, at the end of the day...

I prefer that the courses themselves don't have the unusual elements. I remember one of the 3DS Mario Tennis courts had a gravity-altering or teleporting effect and it ruined the game for me because I simply couldn't wrap my head around 'doing a tennis' at the same time as figuring out new gravity rules every shot.

The desert golf course has Pokeys as danger elements. That's fun and fine by me. Surely in these kinds of sports games it's better to have set dressing than aforementioned bullshit?

Toadstool Tour had birdie badges and to this day I don't know why they didn't become a series mainstay. That's the only thing I miss.

I also don't want the novelty stuff in general, or I want it switchable but my gripe was more that if you are going to put in novelty Mario stuff then the things they do have are generally pretty dull.

The bowsers Castle last 18 is pretty good for a 'Mario location' that also works as a good golf course. The courses are generally pretty good to be fair, in regards to different ways to play them, which often isn't the case with golf courses.

For me it's almost entirely down to the fact I can't play a very simple season of golf where everyone has scores which carry over in a big tournament.

And that I can't pick what weather to play on all of the courses, or a time of day, or AI level for instance.

The unlocks are just slightly better stats (in general, some things go up and others go down as you'd expect but they're better than your standard clubs). Although even if it's pointless, why can't I spend coins on stupid clothes for the characters, or even the novelty clubs that you do get on the adventure golf, you can only use with your mii (and can't seem to unlock or buy or anything with the other characters).

It's still a good game of golf but unless the dlc ends up being quite considerable (I sincerely doubt it but you live in hope) I'm currently pretty disappointed I used one of the online vouchers for this.

Also (and I'm aware that it doesn't really matter in regards to how the game of golf itself plays etc) why is there no FIR or GIR? I have a funny feeling it wasn't in the other ones either but it seems such an obvious staple of golf. It does also mean that you don't ever have to actually care about landing on the fairway aside from hitting off whatever you land on which slightly diminishes the "beat your P.B. " side of things as you aren't docked points or stats for not doing FIR etc.

Sorry, I'll shut up until I've unlocked everything else. I just find it very interesting why it's so strange.

I have definitely seen these stats recorded, possibly just for the round I had played at the time. I can't recall where right now, but they're in it somewhere!

Ah right, I think it might be in the general stats then. Trickier to know how you're doing as you play the courses though. This is probably the tiniest quirk about it if anything and I can understand why you'd not have it in a, I dunno, more "casual" golf game.

But there are so many better golf games. It's not like every golf game is the same, that much is evident from this thread.

Some are amazing and of give 10. Touch Golf NDS, Everybody's Golf 2 PSX, New 3D Golf Simulation MD, Links 2005 Xbox, Mario Golf GBA, Microprose Golf ST, Golf Story NSW.

Some are average, such as many early golf games. These would get a 7.

Some are bad and I'd only award less than 5 out of 10. This game falls into this bracket for me. So do the recent Golf Club and PGA games.

Just because a game is new isn't enough. It needs to be good. That's why I gave up on this and am back to playing my favourite golf games.

To be fair this is probably the only golf game i have spent a while playing so i have nothing really to compare it with (last golf game was leaderboard golf on the amiga really).

I'm enjoying it, seems a bit bare bones. Gonna try some multiplayer with friends though, see how it holds up.

I like this a lot so far.

Played a round online last night with a couple of friends - two of us in different towns in England, one in Germany. We were communicating via a video call on our PCs at the same time.

The netcode doesn't seem to be brilliant - we all saw stutters and freezes simultaneously - but it does seem to prioritise the player who is currently playing, so it doesn't mess up your shot.

We played normal match play, so no running after your ball. Essentially just a nice traditional game of golf (although we left special shots on, which the others regretted when I used King Bob-Omb's special to blow their balls off the green).

One major snag was that we got disconnected on hole 17 of 18, and that was that. No way for us to return to the game. It's the only match I've tried online so I can't say whether it was a one-off (apparently my friend in Germany has a very slow/flaky wi-fi connection, although the video call was rock solid throughout) or if it's going to be a real issue for future games.

That really annoys me. It shouldn't even need that much netcode for a golf game. It's a slow game so easy to predict even with the powers, largely deterministic, or at least not too difficult to mask moving stuff to the right spot, it's pretty restrictive in what it lets you see, and it's not like they need to get it working over multiple platforms. Even in something like the speed golf, the only thing it really needs to worry about it who putts first.

The best netcode is little or no netcode, IMO. I still chuckle about some good reviews about the netcode in a game I once did, because it barely had any.

I quite like this, it feels pretty similar to gamecube version... very solid and nice visuals. Local mp is good fun... I especially like the simultaneous split screen, and speed golf is a hit with me and the boy!
