A bit of a hard sell this, it did poorly, and then BotW's pitch was literally "do the opposite of Skyward Sword", and it went onto be one of the biggest critical and commercial successes ever.

Except this is nonsense, and there is a straight through line to BOTW. Stamina gauge, collecting bugs and things to upgrade weapons and pulling puzzles out of the dungeons (discussed in interviews) at the time all hint the way towards BOTW.

What they can’t show is how they have improved motion controls which could be the single biggest thing they have done, they’ve just said “smoother motion controls” or something along those lines.

A lot of people seem to think it’s just some waggle fest but it really isn’t. I can imagine loads of people thinking they’ll go buttons only but falling back on motion controls when they realise how much better they are :D

I only had 2 issues with the game. Fi's constant interruptions & having to do the Imprisoned Fight over & over. Bosses that run away from you have never been my favourite.  If they can tone both of them down the rest of the game will have a chance to shine.

The "many problems" the game had were basically: telling you about items you collect on every new session, and some repetition towards the back half of the game (not that far removed from the padding at the end of Wind Waker). And Fi.

Skyward Sword is the most restrictive 3D Zelda ever made, Breath of the Wild is the most open. Skyward Sword focussed so much on puzzles it had no sense of place, in Breath of the Wild the sense of place arguably came at the expense of some puzzle, and especially dungeon, focus.

A few isolated elements being in both games does not a throughline make when the games are so completely opposite in approach. 'Collecting things to upgrade equipment' is so broad you could apply it to practically every action adventure or RPG ever made, including most Zeldas. I forgot Skyward Sword even had a glider, so limited was its usage compared to BOTW. I'll give you the stamina meter but even the pulling puzzles out of the dungeons bit is contestable. In Skyward Sword, the puzzles were the world. In Breath of the Wild the puzzles were a very small part of the world. Again, completely opposite approaches to world design.

This whole 'Skyward Sword was Breath of the Wild 0.5' type argument doesn't really work for me and feels like more of a way for them to try to flog this remaster to people who jumped into the franchise after BOTW.

Skyward Sword was, mechanically, the most tired Zelda game.  It slavishly followed the formula the series had been following since 1998 and felt quite boring as a result - very much 'seen this, done that'.

I had to push myself to finish it, which I only did because I wanted to finish it and SMG 2 before retiring my Wii.  I've no desire to go back to it, ever.

Skyloft is the best 'hub' of any of the Zelda games... the music makes me feel happy.  I loved the timestones and how it gave a peek into a distant past.  Skipper's Retreat made me sad.

to add - I'll agree with the slow opening and the re-use of The Imprisoned.  It's the most lore and story heavy of the Zelda's.  I'm hoping that it's getting the attention mainly because Demise is coming back as the big bad, although that would require him to escape from the Master Sword....

Yeah mechanically it remains the most advanced in terms of controls, there’s some wonderful stuff in there, the flying bug for example.

I get what people mean about the backtracking or feeling constrained in the over world, but there’s a lot to do and it’s on the whole really enjoyable, coupled with some of the greatest dungeon design in the whole series.

I’d have loved better integration of the sky & over-world, clearly held back by the hardware at the time, but it’s a great ride.

I wouldn't call having enemies that need bisecting at specific points using the new unique control system as "mechanically tired".

Many of the puzzles in Skyward Sword felt the freshest they'd been in ages.

yeap - I honestly don't understand why folks hate SS so much.  It streamlined the interface massively, you were constantly moving.  It introduced some great new items.  Stamina was a great introduction.  The puzzles were fantastic (and I'll maintain that the final dungeon is an art).  The finale was genuinely EPIC.

In my mind the perfect Zelda game features the overwolrd of BOTW but with floating islands I can freely fly to... but with some 'traditional' dungeons somewhere.

And loads of underwater stuff - indeed that would be the ultimate Zelda, imagine skydiving through the clouds seamlessly and landing anywhere :o

You can see in the comparisons that it's the same models with no touching up. In some ways it looks worse as you can pick out the polys more in the HD version.

I guess most of it is the HD textures, but odds are they already had a higher source for them anyway. Press export, bish-bash-bosh, Skyward Sword HD.

Okay, it'll be more than that. Looks like they did some stuff to Link's nose there. But 99% of it is that.

I reckon the source and data will be mostly untouched straight from the Wii game but built onto switch. Same as they did with Mario Galaxy. I'll be curious if they've made any effort to mask it's a Wii game as they didn't at all with Mario.

I did really enjoy SS and I'll be getting this day one but I agree it's got its faults. It's very tutorial heavy and takes ages to get going. It felt very derivative of the Ocarina and TP formula by that point. I didn't really enjoy the flying very much. I missed the overworld 'map' and sense of exploration on Epona. The repeated fights with a pretty frustrating boss are a series low. Too many collectathons. Fi is a pest.

Despite all that, many of the dungeons and areas and creative flourishes are wonderful. I'm really looking forward to it, to be honest. I do still have a Wii technically ready to go but I'm happy to wait for the remaster. It's good to have one game to look forward to.
