The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword HD

I first played Twilight Princess after completing Skyward, both on Wii, and I found the combat honestly a downgrade from the motion controls in the later game, simplistic and button-mashy. The motion controls take a long time to get used to in SS, but when they click they make for some really satisfying swordplay - absolutely not just 'waggle', you need to be precise and accurate with your slashes against some cool enemies and bosses that have been designed around this accuracy and positioning.

The game takes a long old time to get going and I hope they address that in the port (they won't) but once it does it offers some of the best dungeons and puzzles in the series. Sick orchestral theme too!

Couple of hours or so IIRC. Think this also got an Edge 10 at the time too.... Controls have always been a bit marmite on this. Flying found them a bit vague but then you were controlling a flying bird so perhaps that was a bit intentional :)

A bit of a hard sell this, it did poorly, and then BotW's pitch was literally "do the opposite of Skyward Sword", and it went onto be one of the biggest critical and commercial successes ever.

I expect people will buy it, because remasters and re-releases seem to be the easiest fucking money around at the moment, but I expect the linearity and endless tutorialising and handholding will see this have a worse ratio of started to completed than all those people who struggled to get through all Twilight Princess HD's padding a second time.

£50 does seem a bit much, which is why I used the Nintendo Switch Game Voucher offer on the eShop which makes it a slightly more palatable £42, & then the Gold Point discount on top of that which made it £40, which it probably should have been in the first place.

I'm torn on this one. On the one hand it's got the amazing temple & boss combo of the Ancient Cistern, and some really clever stuff with the time stones... but on the other it was one of the more irritating Zeldas with its weirdly paced Imprisoned rematches and the constant Fi interruptions.  If they could at least iron out the Fi stuff it would be a nice QOL improvement

Also being left-handed made the sword controls a bit too fiddly. The stick controls might help with that at least.

Why? I don't know, my hands don't find waggle controls comfortable. Why do you find it comfortable?

My hands ache. It's annoying. The joycons are small so they add the new sensation of balling your fist into the mix. The pro controller is the only way forward.

I find them comfortable because your can sit how ever you like with your hands apart, they’re just easy to hold and use that way.

I absolutely hate motion controls, so I’m happy they’ve decided to put standard controls in there, but…

Are they serious with £50? From looking at the trailer it doesn’t seem like they’ve done anything at all with the graphics. Have they done anything else, such as QoL improvements - better frame rate, faster loading between areas, skippable text, etc?

If not, it makes this a really difficult sell, especially after reading how MS have started to roll out their new thing that can up the frame rate of BC titles to 120fps at NO COST.

It’s 60fps, no idea beyond that.

@Majora You could well be right but it came out at the arse end of the coffin dodging Wii and you needed an extra peripheral to play it.

It will sell because the Switch is looking pretty barren in terms of genuine big name stuff.

Link's Awakening Remake has sold 4.5m.

I would bet £500 that this sells 5m.

Yeah it will do 5m without breaking a sweat, I’d say in the region 8-10m is a good estimate based on how popular Zelda is right now, a barren release schedule otherwise, and the fact that the Switch is still selling like hot cakes.

No more waggle is a win, but I can't help but feel that changing it to the right joystick will make it just as divisive. It probably won't be a Kid Icarus hand killer, but trying to nudge the camera and instead fluffing an attack will take some getting used to.

Having to use the weeny joycons to play waggle sword would be a nightmare for me for longer sessions. My hands would cramp.

Skyward Sword didn't have camera controls back in the day - so either they stick with that, which will feel weird on a twin stick console - or they do something like the sword only swipes when you z-target.

A lot of what makes the controls great is being able to move, attack, switch weapons, aim etc. all without sacrificing mobility, I guess some sort of z-targeting or toggle could work for camera controls but it might compromise the game which really is built all around it.

I finally finished this last year and found it a great Zelda game, but hated the waggle all the time, so the news of this release are music to my ears.

As for the price backlash, well, I don't see the difference with people buying Wii U conversions for the Switch at full price.

I guess it's just that nobody bought a Wii-U, but everybody with a Switch has played Skyward Sword before.

It’s a ten year old game. Most people with a Switch where probably still in nappies when it came out.

Indeed! This will sell to a whole new audience. Is it worth £50? Absolutely if you have never played it before. However if you have unless there are some significant upgrades/ additional content probably not so much however depends on how much of a Zelda fan you are. I personally wouldn't want to play through this again.

Well the first and most obvious difference is Wii U games are already of a much higher fidelity anyway, generally they’re still pretty modern looking and they often add extra features with these ports.

Button controls aside it appears they’ve done nothing else with this port, no extra content, no QoL improvements, and if anything the HD up-res only makes the game look worse. On the plus side it is 60fps.

The main problem I have is the inconsistency with these re-releases, £50 for three Marios, £50 for this solo :hmm:
