^ yeah i had a similar experience, really liked the more simple motion controls in twilight princess, in skyward sword they made them more complicated and it just didn't always work properly for me, made the game a bit frustrating. still getting the new version.

For someone who loves BOTW, OOT, WW but didn’t enjoy Twilight Princess or Majora’s Masks, is this a Zelda game for me?

It's the worst one out of all those.

Dunno.

The QoL improvements will remove a lot of the stuff that can get tedious.  It depends what you didn't like about TP or MM.

QoL or not, it’s still one of the weakest 3D Zelda games. It’s the pinnacle of the annoying structure of Twilight Princess, where you need to do a sequence of unlocking things to get to each dungeon.

The game is also super patronising and the helper character sucks HARD.

That said, some of the game mechanics and dungeons are so damn good that it’s hard to not recommend trying the game out.

@Paulando - The story elements (which I'm assuming you can skip from the start now) are worse than the constant reminders.

Like at some point you reach a place, it's obvious what the place is and you decide to go there and Fi says "I predict a 95.65% chance we are at place". It's that sort of thoughtless writing that just make me think about the hour or so I spent finding three things to find the three key bits to get to this point for the Nth time.

That you can skip it now is a besides the point in a way. Until BotW, I was convinced Skyward Sword was the death knell of the series for me.

Definitely this.

I always remember that I found a cog or something in one level that was obviously needed, but at that point in the game I couldn’t interact with it at all and I ended up spending so much time trying to figure out how to activate it. Eventually I moved on and then started the quest where I needed it. I’m sure there were loads of weird design decisions in it like that which put me off at the time.

Saying that there are some excellent dungeons in it and the timeshift stone level was top class.

Still my least favourite Zelda, but I think most of that was down to the motion control nonsense.

I enjoyed it a lot more than Twilight Princess (which I've tried three times bit never finished) and Majora's Mask (which I played for the first time on the 3DS and couldn't see what the fuss was about).

From what I can remember, it's a pretty self-contained Zelda and lacks the open-world elements of BotW and WW (and OOT, I suppose). It does have some excellent dungeons and gimmicks, however, especially towards the end.

Probably not to be honest, even more so if you don’t like motion controls because the game was built from the ground up with them and disabling them will be like playing Mario Kart with all the assists on.

It’s also very long and you have to repeat some bits over and over, and the flying is a bit wonky.

I love it btw!

I can handle the little bullshitty quirks in any Zelda game. I’m sure I’ll be fine with this. I played through Minish Cap recently, and even though it’s fairly low down in the Zelda league table, I was hooked until the end. Got all of the Kinstone pieces too.

One thing that became apparent, after I was looking for something similar to play afterwards, is that no other series has that mix of overworld/colourful graphics/fun combat/dungeons/puzzles like Zelda games do. Even the slightly whiffy ones - for Zelda standards - are gold in my eyes.

Iirc I bought the motion+ things especially for this game because everyone swore up and down that it made a massive difference. They lied.

MotionPlus was required to play SS.

I meant that they said it made a massive difference to the enjoyment of motion controls. It was indeed better, but it didn't make a huge difference. Not to the degree that it would change anyone's mind who didn't like motion controls before.

My 8 year old is currently playing BOTW, so it's going to be interesting to see how regressive SS seems compared with that. But, of course, SS had some great dungeons whereas BOTW had none (the Divine Beasts don't really count), so that's as good a reason as any to replay it. While the Shrines in BOTW were kinda like mini-dungeons, they weren't the same - particularly because the aesthetic never changed. I didn't complete SS (maybe because of the handholding), so it's one to chalk off the list.
