I've never played a Splatoon game, but has a Nintendo game voucher burning a hole in my online account so decided to grab it, my 2 boys will probably like it too.

I presume the best way to ease myself in is to do the campaign before I try any online stuff?

I'd do a mixture of both - the campaign gives you a good primer in the weapons and specials, against some easy targets. Also do try and stick to motion controls through the learning curve - I didn't play Splatoon 2 with them, and it has transformed the game for me. Splatoon doesn't have any auto aim so can be quite difficult to aim without using it!

Thanks for the tips. I'll try motion controls from the off then

This was the video that finally convinced me to switch to motion. Do have a play around with sensitivity of the sticks and motion and find what works best for you - I have sticks on low sensitivity compared to motion on high sensitivity. I still use right stick to look around (like in a 3D platformer) and instinctively now use motion for the fine aim

I was able to play just enough to get to 2400p on the reward scale, with a best of 92 eggs. It's the top 5% for a reason but I didn't see myself getting close to those numbers without something like a Tornado stage.

Wahoo World was a great Salmon Run stage though, would Egg Throw again.

Another method I don't see being mentioned anywhere (at all) is to use the movement stick to point the player character and then centralise view with the Y button, in essence quick-turning to face any chosen direction within one or two frames without having to touch the right-stick at all. I have a video example from the lobby area I must upload at some point.

If you value your sanity, then I suggest avoiding Salmon Run right now, it’s an absolute clown show. Down from +3 to part-timer.

I don’t understand why people play it like it’s a solo mode. Fly fish firing tenta missiles? Well they not locked onto me so, whatever. Glow flies? What do you mean don’t stand in the open and try to solo them? Teammates down? Not my problem!

Yeah, saw a lot of that in the past week. Lot of newbie-like behaviour, ignoring clear threats, leaving team-mates hanging.

Not that I'm the greatest team player out there, but I strike a pretty good balance - and if I have the long range weapon, I'm the backup.

I wonder if the Wahoo World Big Run boosted people up a few levels - I know I went from +1 to +3 and had a 111 high score from just a few half-hour stints in the game. I just don't play often enough to keep my levels up otherwise, so tend to bounce between +1 and +2.

Level rot in ranked will hit me, for sure.

I had an absolute griefer in Clam Blitz the other evening. Sniper who just stayed right back at spawn and swimming around aimlessly, despite repeated calls to go 'this way'. I double checked the tape (in case it was just a player perhaps handing it over their game to a kid) and saw very deliberately aiming single clams at our own basket and watching them bounce off. First time felt angry enough to report.

Looking forward to the next Splatfest, please be sweet:

Oh man the Grizzco Slosher in the current mystery weapon salmon run is an absolute git to use effectively.  It can mince a boss in no time but is so, so slow and ink thirsty that it is a total liability against smaller stuff, in a tight spot or on terrain that is not well inked.  Got to hope that if you get it then its in round one!

Really not a suprise. New category of points for the Tri-Colour matches as the way those work have changed. Team Sour 15% was the lowest number of players on a team so far. As Team Sweet this was really obvious in the Tri-Colour as nearly all matches were Sweet Vs Sweet Vs Sweet. Sour couldn't get the player numbers and I bet as a result they hardly ever had any defending matches.

I played a load of Tricolor yesterday as Team Sour (Big Man for life!) and it was about 50:50 attack and defend. Never played any regular matches that were Sour vs Sour and almost all were against Team Sweet.

Won a 100x battle against Team Sweet, and it was nice to see the option of posing for pics with my team on the same float as the Idols.
