Matchmaking during the splat fest is pretty bad. It’s generally a steam rolling one way or the other (ie win by a lot or lose by a lot).

Think I'm about finished with Splatfest - ended my last match 7/1 KD which is pretty great! Won all 4 of my x10 matchups too.

 

Not sure what is happening with the Tri-Colour Turf War - not a single game came up for me...

I've not had a single X10/100/333 battle, but have had to defend a couple tricolour battles so far. Still only played about 15 matches though so pretty small sample size.

Played 33 matches today, probably around half were in 'tricolour' mode but have not had a single actual tricolour match.  It tends to give me a couple of normal turf war matches and then a comms error in the lobby or a not enough players message.  Those errors are much, much more common in tricolour as opposed to normal open mode.

Certainly looks like when Nintendo patched it to reduce the frequency of tricolour matches for the defending team they overdid it and its now very hard to get one, certainly as Team Gear in any case. 😢

Lots of theories on reddit etc that there are hardly any team fun players but looking through my match history I have lots of normal 4x4 matches against Fun so the players are available.

I had 5 festival shells (from winning 10x battles) before I got my one and only 100x battle so far and we won! 😂 I got almost 1/4 million clout from that match!!

 

Think i've lost in 1 or 2 10x matches too so in a total of 50 matches this weekend have had:

6 or 7 10x and 1 100x matches

I've just read that apparently it's pulling Tri-Colour players for Team Fun from Open playlist. Not Pro.

 

Given how miserable that playlist is for solo players, I can totally see how it might have less players than the Pro playlist.

Yeah, I'm playing open and 50% of my games were defending tri-colour games today. We even won one convincingly, which I don't recall happening in the demo.

 

And yeah, it's much harder defending - both attackers have a large area of home turf and height advantage when approaching the middle ground.

Will give splatfest a go tonight. Recently I tried out the buckets for the first time, they're amazing!

It's really not. I've had loads of close-run games today, including losing a Tricolour battle (attacking) by just 1%.

Go through the wall of glass doors to the left of the capsule machine/right of the booth you select the game type in.

The more shells you have the more chance to trigger a 100x match.  When one does happen all your shells are removed

I believe the chance of a 10x also increases with the number of shells you have

solo only and you are placed with different players each match so there is no match to match carry over.  Also the festival shells and clout are counted separately to the open matches, you get a bit more clout for a win but none for a loss  and there is no tricolour battle

It is in a locker room area immediately to the left of the shell out machine in the lobby.  It just looks like a black wall/ doors before you approach it.

No. 4 on my team... we won. No. 1 on my team... we lost. 😛 I'll chip in with a few more and hopefully the pros will bring this Splatfest home for us.

All I’m saying is that I don’t think the Splatfest matchmaking is bad. It just seems like standard turf war to me. Sometimes you get steamrolled and sometimes it’s nail-bitingly close.

And I’m saying, in my experience, I’m either steam rolling or getting steam rollered during splatfest. It has (again, for me) been much closer matched outside of the splatfest.

It's more skill based if you play the Pro rather than the Open matches. It uses a score like the old power level in Splatoon 2

Huh. Open Clout doesn't carry over to Pro Clout. And you don't get Clout on Pro if you don't win. Oh well. Still I've enjoyed the ones I've played in Pro. It's odd they called it Pro, mind.

It's called Pro because it calculates a power/skill level after a few matches and matches you with similar players, Nintendo publishes the top 100 Pro players based on power level at the end of the Splatfest so it's something to aim for for the really top players. 

I somehow engaged beast mode tonight and had 12 straight wins for Gear in the open queue, still haven't seen a bloody tricolour match though! We finally lost against those Team Fun bastards in a 10x match of all things.

I like the in-game replay ability - not watched myself take part in a match before.

 

My Splatfest stats aren’t great, with 20 wins to 26 losses, mostly in Open. One tricolour defence failure, one win.

What's the highest number of splats anyone's scored in a match? Mine's this from a few days ago.

 

We then had this ridiculous match where I got 22 but one of the team had 32! We had 88 between us, I'm not really sure how there was even time to kill them that many times.
