Yeesh. I haven't won a match defending in tricolour Turf War.

Won my first tricolour but have lost the other two.  All matches as an attacker.

The win!

It keeps putting me in regular turf wars though even though I am in the tricolour lobby 😢

Replying to myself but I think what happens is if it cant put you in a tricolour match then you get put in a regular match and from then onwards are in the regular match queue so need to exit and rejoin the tricolour lobby

Having had a few more tricolour matches it does seem that the attackers almost always win, the 2 early losses I had were a bit of a blip.

Dunno about you, but 'Fishy Clock Puncher' seemed an appropriate tag to me.

I do like punching fishy clocks.

In the three-way matches, it seems that the inkage is counted separately - so the two attackers can kind of cancel each other out so neither wins.

Ah, interesting - if you're on the leading team going into the tricolour section, you don't get a choice; it's random each time.

Yep. Which puts the leading team at a disadvantage as you don't know if you'll get 4v4 turf war or more of a defense 4v2v2. Pretty clever balancing technique.

I won a X100 game, so pretty pleased!

TEAM BIG MAN!

Watched my youngest playing this before I buggered off to the airport to fly home, and it looked like Splatoon 2+ (eg fab).

Alas my online gaming days are over, I couldn’t keep track of anything going on on the screen so it’s saved me £50. I’ll spend it on a new airliner for MSFS instead 🤓

After playing up til it ended at 9 I am 99% sure I was wrong and it is just random.  I had a later case where re-entering the tricolour sent me to a regular match and also an example where I stayed where I was and it alternated between match types and back again.  So seems like it is random for all 3 teams.  Bit disappointed that I was getting such a low proportion of tricolour matches though, think I was getting 1 in 3 at the absolute most.

Does deffo seem that tricolour matches favour the attackers which is a bit surprising given that the 2 attacking teams can fight each other as well as the central defending team.  I had a few matches where my attacking twosome had over 40% coverage at the end, for example:

Anyway, most fun/ one sided match was one where I was on a full squad of Aerospray MG players.🤣

Ended the evening on ruler +1 ranking with about 450k clout not that any of that carries over when the game launches.

Very much just more Splatoon 2 with a few tweaks but looking forward to seeing what else has been added in a couple of weeks.  Got to say I really like that you can somewhat direct where you land at start and on respawn, that's a nice little addition.

Won a couple of tricolour matches defending for team Big Man. You have to juggle defending against enemies spawning on both sides and inking their respective turfs to keep them both at a lower percentage than your own. They both have areas the defenders cannot access, so can’t be completely shut-out. It’s tough, but fun, and you still get regular 4v4 matches to even things out.

Killing crab tanks single-handedly is highly enjoyable :)

Does seem like Splatoon 2+ so far. 2 seemed a bigger jump from 1 than this is from 2, although we haven't seen the new Salmon Run, yet, nor all the weapons.

I was hoping for a new Ranked mode; I ended up just playing Clam Blitz when it was up, in the end.

So this seemed as impenetrable as always for newcomers, my 9 year old daughter was keen to try it after the amount of promotion its had on CBBC etc but from 9:01 everyone seemed to have better weapons somehow and we couldn’t last for more than 10 seconds at time against seasoned players.

I get that it’s a fresh start with the match making but it needs to do a better job of welcoming brand new young players rather than appealing to the same obsessive elite players from

previous games

I’ve always like the idea of this game and own both Splatoon 1 and 2 but it’s just impossible for new players to get into

It's not impossible is it? Admittedly I've got 40 years on your daughter, but I don't and have never played multi-player FPS games for more a few minutes, but I gave this a go yesterday and had a great time for a good few hours. I was often coming top of the winning team just by actually doing what the game wants you to do, paint the floor and where possible over the top of the other teams paint. To begin with I was coming off worse in almost all one on one confrontations but before long I was holding my own in that area too. No great kill streaks or whatever they're called but I was 'splatting' others as often as I was getting 'splatted'.

As long as a new player actually plays the game as its meant to be played and doesn't throw the towel in if they're not always winning they'll do fine.

I'll definitely be buying this on release.

Yeah, splatoon is way better than most shooter games in that base Turf War can be won by some players not engaging the enemy at all; ink coverage wins the game. We lost one game yesterday where they did just that, better than us.

One tip is to work near others, so you have backup.

Or embrace your skill level and select respawn time boosts as secondary gear.

Or go for speed boosts or paintbrushes and avoid conflict...

Outside of Splatfests, which force you to wear a special Tee, you can wear shirts with a Ninja Squid primary buff (if that's still in 3) that make you very hard to detect when moving while submerged; excellent for defensive play.

To be fair, you've been playing during what is essentially a time-limited exclusive premiere of the latest entry. Of course all the heads are going to be on.

If you do pick up the game maybe stick to the 1-player mode and give the matchmaking a week to settle?

It wasn't really explained, and it took me a few matches, but you had access to about twenty different weapons from the start. You just needed to change it in the player menu.

Oh, yeah, if you didn't know how to change weapons or gear, you would be at a huge disadvantage. A roller might have been better for a new player.

Results are up, by the way, if you run the free splatfest client once more.
