Splatoon 3 - it's here!

Had a great Splatzone run yesterday winning the series 4-1! In fact two of the games I won without being splatted:

Hammerhead has a fairly obvious space for me to stand as a backliner. There was no other backliner in the game. This is a really good example of why you cannot afford not to engage with the backliner. I had ZERO pressure on me for the entire game and as such it was a standard peppering of splat-zone and beyond. Completely autopilot.

An earlier Scorch Gorge game we did well but I really struggled to make an impact and felt carried by my team. For this game, I decided to spend a lot of time at ground level and stuck to maintaining a midrange through Killer Wail and Toxic Mist. Again I got away with this because no other elevated backliner putting pressure into middle.

I thought it was really striking how different I played in these two games and is a really good example of the versatility of Tri-Stringer. Replay codes in the images above. Thanks to MonMon (whenever you are) for being an awesome teammate too!

Have to say, I've been pinned down by a good tri-stringer player too often. if I have the range or the opportunity, I'll try to take them out, but they're tough. That ability to arc shots over obstacles into hiding spaces is a pain.

And I totally missed the Splatfest - must be only the second time I missed out.

I have still only 1 King S. kill to my name - although I'm really only dipping into Splatoon these days and rarely play Salmon Run.

Still lots of fun when I do, but I feel bad when I'm clearly the rusty one on the team. Don't think I'll get 5* on my Splattershot Pro…

Only managed one game at lunchtime, but managed to claw victory back against a Japanese team, with a very good sniper in their support.

Patch Notes:

Finally some impact on Crab Tank and improved Triple Inkstrike. Everything is always incremental (which I think is a good way of balancing), and trying to achieve better use of short-range options. As per notes:

Quote

We reduced the amount needed to fill special gauges for some weapons and within that group strengthened some frequently used short-range weapons to increase player options.

We increased the amount needed to fill special gauges for some weapons and within that group curtailed somewhat the tactic of using sub weapons and special weapons to attack from a distance.

In terms of Splatoon 3 playtime - just reached 200 hours - compared to 80 hours on Splatoon 2. Reached A Rank and it is starting to get harder, but do still see some very bad players!

S2 I was at 1700 hours or something ridiculous. I had totally maxed out cash, had all the weapons, all purchasable gear, hundreds of sea snails.

Edit: profile says 1850 hours or more. That's a lotta ink. I still never reached X rank in any ranked mode. I think the rank-rot built into the season transition is going to keep me around A+ unless I make an extra effort. I generally now just play casually at lunch, maybe a half-hour in the evening.

Jeez, just had four straight wins, KOs, in a Clam Blitz Anarchy match. 'On for my best result yet' thinks I 'a clean sweep, maybe.'

Nope. Two of the team drop, and then we're pitched against a Japanese team. Mullered - although not a KO. Their top guy had 23 splats.

Not since the great condiment battle of 2017 has there been a Splatfest with so much at stake. Dark chocolate must win. White chocolate has its moments but they’re few and far between and milk chocolate is just ruined chocolate.

Finally meandered my way to S rank. I only seem to have had a few rank-up battles on the way.

But bloody hell, almost the first Clam Blitz match after that we were slaughtered - completely shut out by the opposing team after they hit their first goal.

Might have left it too late to get through the catalogue this time but let's see if I can knock out three levels a day and it might get me close.

Was scouring the web again last night for buttons for Rainmaker mode—it was in rotation and I'd still no idea what to press to slam dunk the thing. First time I picked up the rainmaker (months ago...) I made it to a goal, didn't know what to do and got duly splatted for my trouble, so since then I forgot about being the Jonah Lomu of the team and stuck to paving the way.

Once again, I didn't turn up any info online so in one match I thought what the hey and picked it up again. The path opened up in front of me and without a single thought of jumping at the goal + pressing Y, A, or anything, instinct took over and I jumped ON it and... yeah. Goal claimed. Simple as that.

At one point, I'd a team that got me two wins in seconds (in a rank up series) only to sadly be separated and go on to lose three on the trot. :( I think Splatzones is generally my best with Tower Control and Rainmaker joint second and Clam Blitz a distant last. Need a lot more time with that one.

Tbh I'd be tempted to pay to win with the catalog. Just give me the stuff and I'll see you next quarter. LOL.

Three tower wins in a row and that's me certified B- now. One of those was a dying seconds knockout from them being down to just 6 points—I was basically putting the controller down if it wasn't for them being right up in the spawning area where I was touching down. It's funny how often (seen it in splatzones too) you can get them to wilt if your team just stays on it.

Does B- mean I'll get paired with even more skilled players who'll speed me through the catalog... er I mean, up the ranks? 🙏

Although I don't think I have ever understood how the zone countdown timers work in Splat Zones.

It's good when the bad guys have to tick it down before it gets to their points, not so good when it's your lot.

Milk chocolate ftw!

The best balance between the bitterness of dark chocolate and the often too sugary gooeyness of white chocolate.

Pretty "sweet" how they completely incorporated these arguments into their Splatfest discussion.

I didn't see the talk of antioxidants coming though.

Ranked A- now. Not that that's in any way an accurate reflection because I'm still garbage. It's taking me hours and hours to level the catalog via losing (up to lvl 44 now!). Probably because I'm just kicked back listening to other stuff while playing... I'm just not amped up and tuned in enough for these matches.

Went with the bubble-lobbing bidet thing for a while this past week and had some brief joy with it. Now switched to dual-wielding. Hate going to Sheldon to sit through all his waffling. I put it on fast and was still able to go online on my phone for a few mins, no exaggeration.

Think Clam Blitz is now my preferred mode*. :D But I need to swap to a weapon that doesn't drop your clams when you unleash your special...

* depending on the team mates.

Yeah, I think it was S2 where I didn't bother visiting Sheldon for ages as I stuck to a couple of weapons, even when levelling up.

Then I went in and it took him a bloody age to get through all the spiel that had been building up. I didn't make that mistake this time around.

Same here. But I don't get the deal with Side Order. Didn't Chaos win the final Splatfest of Splatoon 2 ?

Play on words innit. Pretty cool concept I'd say.

The Octo-Expansion was highly enjoyable to me - really challenging and varied. Anything similar to that will be great.

It's totally bizarre, but I actually think Wave 1 is just a lobby!

Its really unpleasant what Nintendo have done here - I think they know that there are enough folk who don't really want single player content but would pay for this nostalgia for their multiplayer. I think the actual expansion *is* at least a year away. So you are basically buying the actual content completely blind.

This lobby should absolutely 100% be a free, or extremely cheap (£2.99), separate download.

Feels exploitative.

I wonder if it's aimed at the Japanese market, the people who got into the Squid Sisters as a vocaloid act; there were 'live' concerts and the like. Even their amiibo added extra tracks - they've also made a return in each sequel's solo campaign.

So watching them at a Splatfest is the draw; the new lobby the way to deliver it in the game world.
