and clam blitz I haven't the foggiest what's going on.

Glad you're enjoying one of the best games out there, still!

Persevere with Clam Blitz - it is absolutely the most complex mode, with so many different ways to be successful. It's the ranked mode I play most, because the others seem a bit tame in comparison.

  1. Collect small clams by running or swimming into them.
  2. Get 8 and they turn into a large football. Which makes you an obvious target.
  3. Your team needs to get this to the enemy goal (large sphere) and throw the clam to hit their goal.
  4. This opens their goal for a short while - throw clams or footballs in while it is open to score more points.
  5. You can keep their goal open by constantly throwing clams into it. Good luck with that.
  6. 'A' throws clams and balls. You can throw clams and balls to other players. Clams and balls disappear shortly after they are thrown if not picked up.

So you're constantly having to adjust tactics and switch between attack and defence as the game shifts rapidly.

Played two rounds on it yesterday evening to continue a series I had going. Won the first 80-100 then lost the second 100-80. It didn't seem like anyone had any clue what to do, tbh. 😂 Or maybe it was just a defensive masterclass in both.

This is great to know! I hadn't clocked that there's any connection between the two. I will be able to figure out how to contribute better knowing that is the gameplan.

I tried to bulldoze through with the reefslider but it seemed to make me drop my clams? :(

Is it my imagination, or in the tower mode, does it not always start in the middle of the board? It felt like there was one where it was starting close to my spawning area and had no distance to come for a knockout defeat.

It always starts in the middle, but on some maps the end point of the Tower can be quite a distance from base. One small tip on Tower Control is that there is a line on the ground that it follows - this changes colour depending on team that is controlling the tower.

Also more than one player on the tower doesn't make it move any faster but it does speed up the checkpoints.

Yeah - keep an eye out and you'll notice both long clam tails on your team-mates, and little numbers by their names when they are hidden in ink. If one has, say, 7, you can throw them one of your clams to make 8 so they can attack the goal with your backup. If you have 7 and want to set up an attack, hide near the target, hit the 'this way' emote and hope your team-mates are wise to that tactic.

Or, hide near a known clam spawn point on the level, close to the target, and wait for a set of 3 to spawn; that's one reason I normally don't leave enemy ink near my home turf.

Or splat a defender with clams, take theirs that they drop and score. A favourite tactic of paintbrush wielders.

Reefslider? Yeah, it's such a good weapon for taking out defenders, I'm not surprised; the old Splashdown that it replaces did the same. Not all specials drop your clams - Crab Tank and the big hammer trail the clam/ball and can be used to take the ball in close (the Tank is a bit slow to be really effective at this, but I've seen it done a fair bit using the hammer, and scored using both methods). I think the super-jump/elastic thingy might also carry the ball in close, but have not seen it used much in attack.

Saving your specials for an all-out attack is a primo strategy, natch.

Those changes to the Ranking system and Splat-fests are very welcome! Should always have let everyone try both attack and defend.

Yeah, totally agree on the splat fest bit, am looking forward to finally having a go as a defender in a tri-colour match!

Not looking forward to it costing me 170 rather than 150 to join a ranked series though (at S rank)

In playing too much Salmon Run news I got the 100x Fly Fish boss splats badge during lunch today.  That was the final one of the 100 regular boss splat badges I needed for the full set.  Not sure if there are badges for the rare ones, Griller, Mudmouth & Goldie; those will still be miles off if they exist.  King Salmonid badge is at 10 and have been stuck on 8 for a while now so hopefully I'll have that soon.  Getting really close to 100k total Grizzco points too, less than 5k to go now.

The old Jr with Torpedo was a great weapon; I got many splats with it in Splatfests. That plus the new special is going to leave nowhere to hide.

And they've reinstated my favourite weapon, Forge Splattershot Pro, with Sticky and Booyah Bomb for sub and special.

I played a bit of rainmaker on Flounder Heights - ambush city. I'm liking it so far, but it's a short-range, fast-mover kind of stage. Lots of places to pop up close for a splat.

I liked the Snipewriter, but not sure it's for me. Charge to get five rapid-fire, long-range shots off - in the right hands, it'll be killer.

Rank decay has been known for a while but I don’t think the game itself ever bothered to explain it.

I’m not a fan of it. You lose a rank but the opposition is still as strong. The first few weeks of a new season are going to be rough and demotivating.

And some Clam Blitz. I like it - more complex than the original, while more compact. Lots of vantage points for ranged weapons and defence, but a lot of hiding places, angles, and opportunities to pop-up and ambush. Going to be a lot of ink spilled.

A lot of verticality in it.

Opposition will be lower rank too. Pretty sure everyone is going down 2 ranks evenly across the board.

It's a good change so if you don't play the game for 6 month's you still won't be S rank in a game with new balance and out of practice!

Yes, despite my absolutely horrific first impression of it, it might actually be quite powerful if you dare to master it. Being able to splat a Drizzler while it’s shielded is a handy time saver.

The downside of that tweet is the cooperating with your co-workers to get close to bosses when you’ve got no weapons with range.
