Splatoon 3 - it's here!

Had a couple of Anarchy series tower control matches last night against a player using the zipcaster.  It really impacted the flow of the match and they kept getting in beside and behind us and generally being really awkward and annoying to deal with.  Was a great tactic but not sure its one I'd be good at myself!

Ok the single player is great. This could be the whole game and I’d feel I’d got my monies worth.

Seems pretty big - more like the paid DLC in 2. I'm wondering if the plaza is so big to allow for several future expansions - S2 could have supported a second. Maybe one to launch with the Switch Pro, eh?

I've been on the receiving end of a few zipcaster ambushes - managed to win the close-in fights so far, but if I had been a sniper I'd have been toast.

Confusing at first as you get a flash of some sort - hologram? - before the 'caster player hits the target anchor point. Anything that gives such mobility outside/above ink is going to be tricky to deal with.

The one I encountered was sometimes going for anchor points that were high up on bits of the level, hammerhead bridge iirc, and then dropping down on people.  This was making it harder to spot and target their anchors in the first place

I must try that one out.

Zones you have to hold for a short while before the countdown restarts - based on prior possession. Is that what you mean?

No I mean under your number (the other team can have one as well) is another number in a black box (e.g +34).

If you control the zone this number has to tick down first. before your number does.

Having finally found animage reddit explains it

Those are penalties. When a team looses a zone they get a penalty score. When they take it back they must work through that penalty before their normal score continues counting down. The longer they had possession of the zone for and the smaller their remaining score is, the higher the penalty. However if the match goes to time, the penalty points are not counted to determine the winner. If you have any other questions please don't hesitate to ask :)

Whats that all about? Can't find explained in game anywhere

Do you mean the numbers in the black boxes below the main scores eg +28 and +67 in this screenshot:

Those are a penalty that is applied when you lose control and when you retake control it counts down to 0 before your score will start going up.  The longer your team is in control before losing it, the bigger the penalty is.  I guess its a dynamic way of running the scoring in the match and slowing down a team that dominates a lot and balancing out the match a bit more

Yeah, that's what I meant for Splat Zones. Did the same in 1/2, but may have been presented differently.

Is the Clam Blitz one always -1?

Can't remember what t-shirt I had on before the splatfest so I bought one with four available slots (!) and stuck it on. 😁

Had a turf war match where we got splatted non-stop yet still emerged victorious because the opposition only painted their pathway to our doorstep and not much else. Oh well, a win's a win!

I got my golden banner from the gacha machine. 0.1% chance.

We also beat a full team of S+ players at Tower Control last night. They had a very early lead and took the tower to within just 3pts of victory, but we managed to stall it and generally just make life difficult for them with no real attempts at flipping the game. Once we did start pushing you could sense their panic as they were beginning to rush the tower one or two at a time. We managed to win in overtime. Unfortunately a communication error denied me the points, but I don’t care.

Table Turf Battle is a great Switch game in its own right and the perfect way to get your heart rate back down after a stressful ranked session.

This YouTuber has helped me get better at it.

The most simple thing I learned from her tutorials is that you only ever really need to build three specials and then use them on one of the low cost big cards below that don’t come with special chunks. There’s little point in using anything with a special chunk on your final move. The bigger cards can also be hard to find a space for at the end. I now use cards like Big Man to try and mess up a rival’s area early on and am on my way to earning that all-important Level 30 emote.

A deflating night of Anarchy Battles last night. Game after game with these badges and losses every time:

I was mainly Tri-Stringer in Splat Zones and really trying to do all the right things (hold and push positions, using specials and team mates on pushes). Nothing. Switched to dualies too to go for the close range push - straight into enemy turf, push and pull and drag out confrontations. Trying really hard not to just 'blame teammates' and improve my game but I really feel like I am going to play out of my skin to get to B+.

The medals are quite superfluous in the grand scheme of things. The only ones that mean anything are the Rainmaker and Clam Blitz ones, for top scorer, and such.

Although it's nice to get them during Series matches as a compensation for losses, so you won't lose as many points.

As for winning ranked matches you have to keep the mindset that you’re carrying your team, and if you lose it’s your fault. I’ve played a lot of team-based eSports games and for some reason this one is by far the most stressful.

I just got it after being splatted the least out of everyone.

I’m really not having a good time this evening, and actually beginning to lose patience more than anything. I decided to try a Series again after a very long time and ended up losing all three matches. I put it down to bad luck as all three were close games, so right enough the next set I won five and lost one, only there was a connection error on the final victory screen (where all the tape with ‘game’ appears) so that’s another 120pts down the pan.

@Eighthours Sorry, I have a 1/5 success rate when trying to join your games.

I had loads of connection errors last night, it was a bit of a shitshow.

Things seem a lot worse after the update.

I’m also noticing some weird shit with the weapons. The Sloshing Machine’s blasts seem to be able to hit you when you’re completely behind a wall.

I was getting hit by loads of troll-like compositions in ranked as well yesterday. Stuff like three Bloblobbers and a Sloshing Machine in Splat Zones, which seemed utterly impenetrable.

Nope. Yesterday wasn’t fun in the slightest. Any more of this and I’ll be putting it down for good.

The general performance of Splatoon 3 online is why I really only play Turf War and Salmon Run and will likely not bother renewing Switch Online.

I don’t get any value out of The NES/SNES stuff (or the N64 stuff with my expansion pack), and paying for a shaky P2P connection is a piss take so I’ll be protesting with my wallet.

Other than Smash - which is even worse online unless docked - and Mario Kart which I don’t really play, Splatoon 3 is the one I’ll miss I suppose but hopefully by the time my renewal is up next month I’ll be bored of it. Or I’ll have raged snapped the cartridge in half after being booted from the 4th game in a row again.
