Konami IP That Needs New Games or Re-Releases

I'd say a new Bishi Bashi, but I have no idea why they haven't already stuck the old ones on every digital storefront going.

But yes, I will also say... a new Bishi Bashi. Maybe even Smash Bros/Wario Ware it up with all the Konami cast showing up.

I'd really like to see Boktai appear again in some form. I thoroughly enjoyed Lunar Knights on the DS and think there's plenty of scope to explore further, plus I love that sunlight gimmick in the first two.

Suikoden please. Over a decade since an English language title got released, and now they're getting prohibitively expensive to acquire. At least there's Eiyuden Chronicle on the horizon.

My default answer is Gradius in terms of something I'd be interested in playing, but it does frustrate me that Konami sits on so much good stuff. Castlevania and Contra in particular would be welcome, even if they just did them in a Mega Man 10 retro style. They don't have to throw millions at them, just get them right, and make sure they have bloody good music.

I've also always really wanted a proper translation and port of Tokimeki Memorial. That ain't happening.

A couple of weeks ago I finally got round to playing through Snatcher, which is a prime candidate for a port in these visual novel friendly days. Maybe tighten up the gameplay a little, as the system of cycling through everything in the menus until the story decides to move on gets a little tedious, but the visuals, music and story totally hold up.

I kind if understand their problem with Bomberman, as the original was one of those rare games that arrive so perfectly formed in its debut any sequels that add mechanics, complication, graphical updates ruin things and don't make it any better.

In fact quite the opposite, the Germans have the lovely word 'Verschlimmbesserung' - which translates to making something worse whilst actually trying to make things better.

https://www.dictionary.com/e/translations/verschlimmbesserung/

That is every Bomberman sequel.

I mean, the very first (NES) Bomber man was single player only, so that definitely doesn't hold up. Adding battle mode and upping the numbers of players were worthwhile improvements to later games, hence Saturn Bomberman being the best, unless you have only 4 or fewer friends.

Yeah, Tim Rogers' video 'review' (and his later Twitch stream playthrough) have been the closest I've come to scratching that itch. Alas that even romhack translations are unlikely to ever come out thanks to the game being infamously difficult to replace the text in.

ah, I was thinking of the SNES one, that one is the version I have all the affection for.

Obviously Castlevania is the main one here. By which I mean a proper Castlevania, in 2D, which we’ve not had since Mirror of Fate. Bloodstained should have been Castlevania.

I don't feel any hunger fore this.

Castlevania and Metroid have been outclassed by their many inspired clones and there is so many great stuff out there that Konami can stick their IP up their $$$.

Also: if you love Castlevania go watch the Netflix series. It is bloody amazing, Season 3 was so bleak and dark... matches the times we live in. The same studio did another serieus, Blood of Zeus, which is also very awesome and should interest anyone who likes to play Hades.

I still think Saturn Bomberman is the best game in the series.

People are sleeping on Dreamcast Bomberman. It's my favourite way to play.

Didn't the 360 have a decent Xbox live one too?

I think the 360 one was a bit half arsed. It reminds me a lot of worms - what you want is a game that contains a lobby / setup thing where you can choose what items, maps, their strength, hp, friendly fire, all that stuff. They had it in worms... 3 I think it was on the pc (armageddon maybe,  the naming convention is terrible) and then the following one, or perhaps the one that then came out on the 360 removed all of this options to play the way you want to play.

I know it ruins the potential to keep squeezing money out of a franchise but you can evidently just re-release the good version with a new lick of paint rather than trying to do a new one with whatever seems popular.

The latest version of worms free on psplus seems to be like a 2d fortnite with turns removed etc.

The latest bomberman trailer I saw seems to have bosses in it rather than the big bomberman sandbox that I thin is what anyone that remotely likes bomberman would want.

Verschlimbesserung is bang on.

Just playing the project triangle strategy demo and it’s like my wish has come true! It’s just like Vandal Hearts.

I don’t know why I didn’t immediately think Suikoden too, one of my favourite game series of all time. But at least we have Eiyuden Chronicles in a year or two.

In related news, Konami has opened their Official Konami Shop, which apparently is different to the Konami Style shop that was already in place. (According to their FAQ, the new Official Konami Shop is “heading in a more fan-focused way here. It is our goal to provide you with gear and products you’ve always wanted! This store won’t sell games, but thoughtful merch related to our most beloved IP’s.”)

I’m not much for merch, but there is some amusing stuff on the site:

Would gladly buy both of those if I had the money!

As for games, Ring of Red from the PS2 was a great new IP that they could have done so much more with. Xexex was a pretty rad arcade shmup as well, which I'm surprised hasn't come out on the Arcade Archives series yet. Also, Sunset Riders and Cowboys of Moo Mesa.
