Console Hokey Cokey

I only sell a console to get an upgrade, I went from launch PS4 > launch PS4 pro > Last of Us 2 Pro in that order. I then sold the LOU2 Pro when I got my PS5 and it sold for £310 used, so that was a good call. In the past when region locking was still a thing I'd switch between PAL and NTSC consoles and sell them depending on what games were coming out / region exclusivity, thankfully those days are over.

I've never sold a console. I'm lucky enough that I can afford not to need to, and I'm happy to keep the consoles sat under the TV even if they're not being used. Once they're retired, they go in the attic. I've never been interested in cosmetic upgrades, so the various slim models of consoles have never appealed. The only time I've ever bought more than one of a console was with the 360, and only when it broke (which happened twice).

I guess the half-step console cycle we're probably in now might persuade me to sell my Series X to help buy whatever the upgrade is, but I didn't do that last gen. I skipped the One X, and kept my launch Xbox One until the Series X came out. I didn't get a PS4 until the Pro came out, so that wasn't an issue. I'll get a PS5 at some point, and I'll probably just keep that until the PS6 comes out.

I only sell consoles once a generation is over. As much as anything, I couldn't be arsed constantly having to brave the back of my TV unit every few months to incorporate or remove the same console into my setup over and over again. Once I've set it up it's bloody well staying there unless I move flat.

I like having the latest consoles (FOMO i guess) but always sell or trade in the last gen consoles to part fund them.

Sometimes i wish i had kept all of my own consoles but realised that although i like the idea of "retro" gaming, i dont actually enjoy it. I went through a period a few years ago of buying a N64, Dreamcast and Gamecube, collected lots of games then finally sat down to play them. I thought they were rubbish, not at all like i remembered.

I used to trade in current gen consoles for the other big console of the time mainly because i couldn't afford or justify having both (PS2, Xbox etc) but thankfully now i'm in a position where this isn't an issue so this has settled down.

A down side to this is simply not having the time to play all of them (mainly looking at you Oculus Quest) so my pile of shame is growing all the time.

I do feel a bit spoiled if I have everything under the tv and quite enjoy just having what I “need” rather than too much choice.

Luckily last gen (and still at the moment tbh) it was easy to skip the Xbox, but I’m a bit nervous about this gen once those studios produce some exclusives.
