It's like Bake Off for .........

Yesterday I discovered The Big Flower Fight (I think that's what it's called!) on Netflix. Very much the Bake Off model and all about florists creating crazy floral sculptures. I've quite enjoyed the first two episodes and learning a bit about this area. 

 

Vic Reeves and Natasha Demetriou are the 'Mel and Sue' pairing, which seemed slightly random but it's all very nice. 

 

I also watched the one about Interior Design a while ago that was quite enjoyable.

Interior Design on BBC Two was alright, plastering over the cracks with Alan Carr presenting was not the solution...

For those with kids, Shop Class on Disney+ is worth a watch.

Second season of Netflix's glass blowing comp Blown Away finished - really enjoyed it. The episodes really work at just under half an hour, its not too strung out to get loads of backstory or emotional content (though you inevitably get a bit of that when the 'vision' for pieces is explained).

 

The real star though is the medium, glass is such a weird thing to watch be moulded and sculpted into the forms they want its quite hypnotic.

Genuinely cannot believe there’s a dog grooming show on prime time BBC One.  When I saw the trailer a few weeks ago I did say ‘oh do fuck off’ at the tv.

we watch that, its good to have on when our puppy is settling down for bed as she likes a bit of dog tv

 

I can just about tolerate the stupid haircuts and 'breed standard' shapes they are requesting but the last episode where they put coloured chalk on the dogs and somebody went thru with a pink heart on a dogs arse made me really cross

The pottery throw down this year is good as ever but I dunno... There's a dirth of genuinely likeable contestants. You've got a bunch of really blank personalities, a couple who are obviously a step above everyone else, and a false modesty show off one that does the complicated stuff or the challenging stuff every week because, you know, he's just so good.

And Keith Brymer Jones is an absolute top fella. Every time he cries he gets me doing the same. A fantastically enthusiastic judge and I think I have a bit of a Keith crush going on.

Also love the portrait artist one as well, although I think I've only watched a fraction of them.

 

My wife and I really enjoy this and we both just love Keith. I said to her last week when watching, I wish I was passionate about something, anything, as much as Keith is about pottery. I love that he gets emotional when he really takes joy in another person's work. It must be a real pleasure to do something for work which you love so passionately.

Best one was the Lego one. Saw the dog grooming one the other day and liked it just because I like dogs. Pottery one on at the moment and not really grabbing me.

My problem with the pottery one is the tedious ‘technical challenge’ in the middle of each ep - its always as dull as ditchwater, make 10 bricks, boring.

I've taken a dislike to the new presenter, Siobhán McSweeney. I really liked Melanie Sykes as she came across as warm and often very funny but I'm just not getting that from Siobhán.

 

Keith is as amazing as ever though.

I don't mind the new presenter. She does the supportive and banter-y roles interchangeably and is quite good at both.

 

Mel Sykes was decent, and likable, but she was a bit one note and it felt a lot like she was just doing a job. Siobhan has a bit more personality.

 

This week was a bit of a let down. I usually like the big sculpt challenges both for the successes and failures. But this week sculpting music legends didn't really deliver on any front. The failures all came from kiln issues and no-one did anything mind-blowing. The Springsteen bust was obviously the best one but I don't think if you put out in front of me I'd know who it was meant to be. 

 

And how can someone have got to adulthood and not heard of Springsteen? Even if you're not a music fan he's one of those figures that just has inherent societal presence. I'm not a fan, no-one on my family was a fan, none of us owned a Springsteen record, I've never sought out his music. But I still know who he is, and his music.

 

I can only assume the guy is a shut in.

I loved the pottery one. I know it’s a rip-off but it’s not something that’s usually on the telly and it’s very enjoyable to watch. I also use to do quite a bit as a kid and really enjoyed it. The sewing one was interesting but a bit too quaint, it didn’t need to be 

 

I like the sound of some of the others in here though

It is the positivity of both I enjoy, contestants helping each other.

The first of these shows where they've had the bollocks to boot someone for rejecting the brief, even if they're top talents.

 

Good stuff.

 

I quite like the challenges where they're tasked with doing something in a particular manner. It limits the scope of things in such a way that it becomes more interesting.

Pottery Throwdown is back, and good as ever.

 

And I've just discovered that Channel 4 did a 'it's Bakeoff, but for carpenters and joiners' show. Which is exactly what you'd think. It's weird that I seem to know more about woodworking than at least 1 contestant, as the son of a carpenter who is useless with his hands, though.

 

Also the West Midlands is well represented which is always a bonus.

It's Bake Off but it's... dolls houses! The Great Big Tiny Design Challenge is Channel 4's latest go at taking the format and listing it into every possible form of creative expression. And it's not bad, but doesn't quite work.

 

The contestants are broken into 2 teams for their task, each week making a room for a doll's house that's won the lottery based on some theme. As a result you don't really have that comparison between them all and the work they do is a bit of a hodgepodge. And you get team dynamic problems which takes away from the nicey nice thing of the format. Also the use of 3d printers is a bit of a hand wave - they have a couple of them but never seem to acknowledge that 3d printing requires time modelling and then significant time actually printing.

 

But it's still decent viewing and has the usual awe at some of the talent people have. And obviously has the usual loveable contestants - Bexie

Oh and it's good to highlight someone as talented as Willard Wigan as a judge.

Handmade - Britain’s Best Woodworker is back for its second series with Mel Giedroyc presenting.

 

Two challenges per episode, the Big Build to a brief (dining table with centrepiece, free-standing clock) over two days and then an interlude for the Skills challenge. Interesting thing here is that the winner of the Skills challenge then gets immunity from being voted off.
