Yes @Harsin! Ring Fit Adventure is the possibly one of the best games Nintendo has ever made. It's not just that it's a fitness game that works (at getting you fit) but it's great with visual design, and characters, and music, and they make subtle little changes each time you play.

I know it's not going to be great at building mass as you can't exactly progressively load with it, but perhaps I'll check it out as a decent cardio / HIIT workout whilst the gyms are closed if it's challenging enough.

This was a poor answer but I was on my phone and gave you the excuses I'm using.

 

But the real reason is I love these sorts of games. Ever since I played Gateway To Apshai on the old C64 I've loved a good rogue like. R.A.D came close to scratching that itch but the post end game was non-existant. But with Hades, every run is the best run, every load out is the best until the next load out. The bare bones of the game is a lot like Robotron and Defender and other golden age arcade games. You have opponents. They all have very simple behaviours. But it's the way they interact that makes every run slightly different. And it's the same with the loadouts, the way the boons interact can lead to dramatically different playthoughs. It's hard to explain but at this point every run is the same but every run is different. There's a real joy to understanding the systems on an almost instinctual level and what starts off as a clumsy mess with ultra hard bosses almost becomes a sort of dance with the swarm with previously impossible bosses becoming easy....until you nudge the difficulty up using a post game mechanic.

 

For me it might become that rarest of games, the one I have to put away because otherwise I will play it forever despite mastering it, something I've achieved with only a few games (Wizball and Civ 2 being the ones that spring immediately to mind.) 

 

In short it almost feels specifically like it was crafted just for me.

 

Edit. I've only gone and done it, completed a run with 32 heat! I think that's enough now!

The main story mode hits a difficulty ceiling with the amount of effort pretty early, after about 100 hours or so.* But the standalone exercise routines where you don’t have breaks to have an enemy turn or do a bit of jogging or a mini game can be absolutely brutal. The all-legs work out almost ended me.

 

*You can only increase the number of reps it costs to do an action by so much, and at that point you may only just be starting to feel the exertion.

2. The Last of Us Part 2

 

 

If you could cast your mind back to the hazy days of January last year – when we could all touch each other’s faces with gay abandon – the RLLMUK 2019 Game of the Year awards was rocked by a scandal that shook the forum to its very core. The computer game “Gears 5” managed to make its way to number 13 in the countdown. Perhaps we should have seen the signs that COVID had already landed on our shores – I struggle to think of a surer indicator of a loss of taste – but the thread was momentarily overrun by a discussion on how these awards should be presented. Were they supposed to be a passionate, joyful celebration of your favourite games of the year or were they a chance for the me and the crew to present opinions honestly, regardless of whether we agreed with you or not?

 

I know which way I fell on – why on Earth would I spend hours on this if it wasn’t for an opportunity to show off – but I could also see the other side if I took my glasses off and squinted really hard. So when we started compiling the votes for 2020 and could see from a mile off that this issue was going to rear its fungal invested head again with The Last of Us Part 2 – a game that none of us had played and nor had any great desire to – I really wanted to find a way to convey why you all rate it so highly without compromising my journalistic principles (lol) and also without having to play the fucking thing.

 

So! I’ve made my way through the forum thread and stitched together the following review made entirely out of your words. This means is that I get to avoid any confrontation (and I think we could all do without a fight about a videogame right now) and you guys get to think ‘yes, we are right and Jolly is wrong’ - which is such a rare emotion for anyone to experience it would be cruel for me to take it away from you.

 

Over to you then. This is why The Last of Us Part 2 is your Game of the Year Part 2.

I can't stop playing this.  And when I'm not playing it, I'm thinking about it. 

 

I don’t even know where to begin, it’s absolutely amazing.  I'm close to tears, just at the intro. 

 

Naughty Dog are bloody wizards. Damn, this is so far ahead of anything else on the PS4 graphically that if you’d told me it was a PS5 game I would have believed you. I can’t believe how smoothly it runs and of course the animation is something else. It’s the little details, the death throes of fallen foes, the way their bodies just come to a standstill and then stay where they fell, the way the blood pools around them, the way it soaks into the snow, the perfectly realised arterial spray and it’s placement. Good God it's a technical marvel. I'd urge anyone to at the very least have a good look at it. Can't remember the last time I was so bowled over by graphics.

 

The gameplay is something else. The environments are so dense that encounters can play out millions of different ways, but you’re always on the back foot feeing like you’re improvising against the odds. That must be so hard to balance. The new additions, especially prone and squeezing through gaps, make good use of the dense environments and really elevate things beyond the first. The many little tweaks to the meshing gears of the combat systems have big implications despite all seeming iterative. Encounters play out like 20-30 minute one-take sequences which are somehow energising and gruelling at the same time.

 

They really ease you into the combat. First small buildings with a few infected. Then a couple of humans. Then more open environments. Some Scramblers. Then some dogs and before you know it, you jump through windows, sprint over rooftops, crawl through grass, hide under beds, place traps and desperately try to find a safe spot to bandage yourself while groups of humans and dogs hunt you, all in the same encounter. 

 

It’s really good. I mean really good. I barely breathed for about 20 minutes towards the end of Day 2. Bloody hell that was intense. The way the pressure is always on with the dogs and very active, aggressive AI means you can't just hole up in a corner somewhere and pick the enemy off at leisure, it's stick, move, stick, move, a constant readjustment on the fly of your tactics and the use of all of your weapons and abilities. Even small areas are packed with combat opportunities, hidden objectives and alternative routes, the replayability through some of these sections will be amazing. I love stealth done well and this is pretty much as good as it gets. The way the violence escalates and spikes is brilliantly done

 

I know that the acoustic soundtrack is very similar to the first game but there's also some heart-rending ambient drone stuff going on here which is tearing me apart. I've just played through a section that is one of the greatest things I've ever experienced in a game and that music will stay with me for a long time. 

 

It’s like the first game but everything looks, sounds and feels more slick. Exploring the world can sometimes be an exercise in ‘find the walls’ but it so well disguised I can’t blame the game for this because the play area feels really rich and responds in the way you’d expect - there are, unfortunately, some painted-on doors but they’re few and far between. The pacing and combat are improved over the original. The combat is an improved version of what they tried with the later Uncharted games. Punching someone square in the face now really gives a sense of weight. 

 

As for the actual story...Holy fuck. I’m starting to feel a bit physically sick while playing. Not from the gratuitous violence or the plot specifics, but the relentless oppression of being hunted, the sensation of bad choices and regrets being compounded on top of each other, and the possibilities brewing in my head from various Chekhov’s guns seen earlier. the characters are well drawn and I'm having a nice time getting to know them. I think anyone suggesting it does anything new for storytelling in video games should go and play Outer Wilds, but for what this is, essentially hours and hours of walking around as exposition is barked at you, it's clearly best in class. And with that combat system there's a really nice blend between the big HBO story they're telling, and the much smaller stories that I get to tell when they crop up via the emergent combat systems. 

 

This game is the closest I think I’ve seen to Kojima levels of excess, without the soft porn female characters and hamburger recipes. It’s like they took every cool idea for a game sequence they’d had for the past five years and decided to use all of them. I'd give anything to be able to experience it all for the first time again.  Just don’t want it to be over, like a teen on their first holiday without their parents. I’ve loved games before but never been so blown away by the various components that make this so great. 

 

It's relentlessly grim, unforgivingly harrowing and at times almost unbearably tense.

 

It's also the best game I've ever played and a bona fide masterpiece

I never wanted a sequel, but here we are, with a sequel that is truly worthy. Another stunning technical achievement on aging hardware, but this takes the characters from the first game into uncharted (hoho) territory. A brilliant tale of revenge told in an interesting way. A fantastic game.

I completed it twice, back to back. I've never done that before. I just couldn't let it go. The first game is probably up there as goat for me so for this to live up to that expectation was quite the thing.

I think the general criticism of this game has been unfairly harsh. I agree with a lot of the specific points held up against it, but can’t help feel that the discussion around the game has been overwhelmingly focused on its flaws rather than its successes, and the game has basically been getting slammed for falling short of its own ambition. Yes, there’s ludo-narrative dissonance, yes, the moral dilemma presented to the player is one that is in no way applicable to anyone who has ever lived, but when you see so many games receiving praise for unambitious but emotionally simple stories that are essentially straight out of children’s books, I think games like this one, which have had considerable thought and effort put into them to try and move the needle, are absolutely praiseworthy even if the results are mixed. Plus, even if the story isn’t satisfying as a whole, the presentation and acting in each cutscene is beyond anything that I’ve seen before or since. Putting the story aside, I think there’s real magic in the weightiness of how it plays, as well. Coupled with the phenomenally set-dressed environments, it lifts the gameplay beyond the bones of the game’s mechanics, and I enjoyed almost every second I was in control.

Even despite the flaws, this is a tour de force on many levels. An incredible technical achievement where I could only gape at the detail of the environments and characters. A brave story taking massive risks and sort of pulling it off. A compelling evolution of the stealth combat of the first game in well designed combat arenas. Amazing set pieces and environment design. Loads of memorable moments. Great acting and cutscenes so real-looking it's easy to forget you're playing a game. Polished to a sheen and full of insane attention to detail. I didn't want it to end. Only let down by pacing issues and a story which doesn't quite achieve what it was aiming for. Emotionally affected me in a much deeper way than I expected.

The Last of Us 2 made me cry, and I think that's amazing - a videogame, a medium which, not that long ago, was thought of as just a series of beeping shapes and lines on a screen, being able to make a grown man cry his eyes out, and a grown man who (without wanting to sound macho) doesn’t really cry at anything, is incredible. It's a testament to how far games have come, but it's a bigger testament to the quality of NaughtyDog’s storytelling: this is the best written, best acted, best voiced game I have ever played. I was entirely invested from the first minute to the last, thirty hours later, intrigued to the point where I regularly played it until the early hours of the morning, and I thought the game absolutely justified its runtime.

1. Animal Crossing: New Horizons

 

 

‘Animal Crossing:New Horizons has way too much going on in it, to the point that it loses its laid back vibe and is a massive disappointment’. Not my words Lynn…well, actually they were my words. My spectacularly wrong words in Qazimod’s thread of 2020 videogame predictions at the end of 2019, placing myself in the soothsayer hierarchy slightly above your Facebook friend confidently posting last January that this is just a schniffle and will blow over. Man, I was proper wrong. New Horizons is the absolute pinnacle of a brilliant series; a big cosy hug of a game serendipitously released when real hugs were illegal. A reassuringly organised, hilarious and heart-warming escape from an unpredictable reality turned upside by total bullshit. In any other year its gentle, chilled snippets of easy-going therapy would have done me the world of good, but this year my daily visits have felt like a complete necessity. A restorative little pocket. A pause to catch your breath. A truly special videogame.

The scene is set masterfully by the gentle brass of the title screen music, a lovely little ditty that I’ve been mouth-trumpeting around the house all year round. It’s a tune that makes you put the kettle on, turn the heating up and snuggle into the big chair. It’s like a fucking call to prayer or something. You know those little symbols that people wear on their fingers when they’re meditating? It’s *that* chime. It snaps you out of reality and buckles you in for some hardcore, extreme relaxing. I hope you’re feeling mindful bitches because it’s time for some me time* (*not wanking).

This is a game that is summed up by the speed that Tom Nook and Isabelle walk to the counter in the resident services. In what other game is a three second pause whilst you do nothing so bloody nice? Over the course of the year I must be close to a solid half hour of watching Tom’s lovely little pot belly amble to the desk and I don’t regret a single moment of it. They’re taking their time, they’re having a breather and it’s infectious. In real life I’m basically John Cleese’s character in Clockwise. Ferocious with my timekeeping, I was once the first of my mates at a bar despite the fact the I live the furthest away and two of my trains broke down. I know, I sound super fun, right? Well, on more than one occasion New Horizons has made me late. I’ve been so caught up with faffing around and doing ‘oh, just one more thing’ that I have been anywhere up to seven minutes behind schedule. This is unprecedented. This game has broken the fundamental building blocks of my personality with little more than the prospect of a camel selling limited edition carpets. Just what the fuck is going on here?

Why do I love my islanders so much? I mean, it’s obvious with Chief. He’s clearly brilliant. A no-nonsense, cool-as-fuck fox with a deep, bassy voice that sounds like James Earl Jones speaking Lylat. His presence in my life is clearly an overwhelming positive and you simply must meet him. Oh, and it’s obvious with Buck too. The guy has been on Jollywood since day one, always flexing on the beach and trying to get me to work out! Haha, that’s so Buck! He does seem to wear that leather strapped, cyber goth outfit I gave him an awful lot, but he’s just living his best life. You do you, Buck! And Reneè of course. Who could forget Reneè. Sure, she has an odd turn of phrase that may be partially my fault (she has a tenancy to greet people by cheerily shouting ‘cat nipples!’) but she is undoubtedly my best friend and closest confidant. I don’t care how that sounds. I’m in love with a digital pink rhino with Tourette’s and a flower garland on her head that reminds me of Midsommar (I’m sure it’s fine) and I’m gonna sing it from the rooftops!

 

Anyhoot! How have I blathered on for this long without blathering ’bout Blathers?! Blathers is an absolute fucking dude. Custodian of the single greatest collection of cultural artifacts in the world it frankly baffles me that he gives you the opportunity to skip his snippets of information whenever you hand over an exhibit. What kind of monster would intentionally not listen to Blathers speak?! Please Blathers; regale us with your cheerful facts about sturgeon and your begrudged admiration for fuck off, massive butterflies. Your distaste and phobia for insects is clear but your dedication in the pursuit of knowledge is an example to for us all.

My prediction that it would be a ‘massive disappointment’ (a prediction notably short of the standard set by Paul the Octopus who sadly is yet to land on the shores of my Island) was partly because I really struggled to get into the previous game New Leaf. Looking back, this is clearly because I had two young children at the time (when I say ‘had’ I should clarify that I am their father, I didn’t steal them. Also, they’re still around the house somewhere) and couldn’t really live up to the regular commitment. New Leaf just came out at a bad time for me.

 

New Horizons came out at the right time for all of us. The cute little nudge as a new recipe lands in your in-game phone. The wonderful lighting on the dinosaur bones in the museum. The punch-the-air relief of picking out a genuine Mona Lisa. The consistently brilliant puns as you catch a new critter. The unmistakable thrill of seeing a fish shadow with a fin sticking out of the water. These are all just a handful of the magical little snippets of a game that will have saved the sanity of many. To try and completely sum up why New Horizons is the best game of the year without referencing the year itself is a pointless task. It can’t be taken in isolation of the world that it was delivered in. Animal Crossing is as much 2020 as COVID is. And although it clearly didn’t save this total shitshow, good God it gave it a bloody good try.

There are very few games I could describe as furnishing me with a sense of almost complete and total relaxation, like a warm comfort blanket that just engulfs you and makes you feel the snuggest sense of wellbeing. Breath of the Wild is one such game for me. Now too is Animal Crossing.

 

I never really got Animal Crossing in the past, always thinking it just looked like an awful lot of busywork for no real gain or purpose. But then the first lockdown began, and everyone was jumping aboard, so figured what the hell, might as well make this my first dip of my toes into this serie… HOLY SHIT I CAN WEAR WHAT?!

 

I am now a convert. The funny thing is, my initial assumptions were not actually wrong: but it is such good busywork. And who needs more purpose than the desire to decorate your little house with it’s own little kitchen… And maybe a gym… Also a big bathroom would be nice… Perhaps a little writing desk in the living room...

I’ve always had a soft spot for Animal Crossing but never really fell in love with it til now. Part of that is being a parent and seeing the joy my kids get from it, part of it the pleasure of playing something so joyful and part of it the sheer level of craft and care Nintendo put in.

Every evening, for about 30 minutes, I pick up my Switch and do the rounds: collect fossils, tidy up weeds and fallen branches, run a few errands for the islanders, advance a construction project. Little by little I've built a space for myself in Animal Crossing's island world, and little by little it's built a space in me - a quiet, peaceful but not inert constant in a year that feels constantly ready to go off the rails.

Came at the perfect time at the start of lockdown and I happily spent months engrossed in this idyllic island life. Beautifully presented, brilliant and loveable characters, fun activities and a terribly restricted but awesome multiplayer made this a joy to immerse myself in. A well paced unlock structure (except at the start) drip feeds cool new features as you progress. The best feature is the ability to place items and furniture anywhere on the island, allowing you to create wildly different islands with creative themes. Acting not only as a fun escape from the real world, but a lovely social scene as well, New Horizon put a smile on gamers faces when many needed it most - and its a great game to boot.

If you’d asked me in late March/early April this year what my game of 2020 was going to be, then I would have said this one, without any hesitation. As has been mentioned countless times already, both here and elsewhere, it really was the perfect lockdown game and completely consumed my life for the month or so that I played it. Perfecting my island, trading items with other forumites, checking the turnip market - all of it I just found entirely compelling. Playing it was the last thing I did at night before I went to sleep and turning it on again in the morning to check the shop, or my deliveries, or who was in town that day, was the first thing I did when I woke up, bleary-eyed, come the morning. I put over 200 hundred hours into it over just four weeks. I can’t remember ever doing that with a game before.

It's just been a real comfort. Easily my most played game of the year and there have been very few days where I didn't check in. Seeing how the islanders are getting on, sending each other little letters and gifts or just listening to the sea washing in. Auch Island has been a lovely place to relax this year.

Really happy for Animal Crossing. Not that it's a person that can feel or anything, just that I think it's the game that has and always will sum up 2020 for me. The Last of Us 2 is undoubtedly about as good a version of that type of thing we're ever likely to get, but Animal Crossing made me wake up early to check shop prices during a time there wasn't really much drive to get up at all, so for that I'm glad it gets the gold.
