On the evidence so far, I don’t think these Sprint races work for F1 - at least with the cars this year, the 2022 cars might be different.

Without pit strategy it’s largely just a procession it seems.

Also doesn’t bode well for tomorrow In terms of overtaking.

Absolute disaster for Lewis. This and Sochi are meant to be the tracks he has a car advantage before we go into circuits that are traditionally Red Bull territory. He’s going to have to hope Danny Ric and Lando give Max issues off the line tomorrow or it’s a massive moment for the championship.

Yep. if Max is in the lead at the end of lap one he's going to drive off into the distance with Hamilton stuck behind the McLarens with only an undercut available to overtake. It's going to be just as tedious as the sprint race.

MGU-H out. Volkswagen in. New engines pushed back a year.

I feel the-race.com is jumping the gun a little here but it would be an interesting and surprising development (given Mercedes insistence on the MGU-H staying) if it's true.

Of course *I* know why they would want rid of the MGU-H and exactly what it does but maybe someone would like to explain briefly for those not so educated.

Part of the turbocharger. Recovers energy from the engine exhaust and feeds it into the hybrid electric system (and vice versa - can take energy out of the electrical system and use it to more quickly spin up the turbo to the right speed when boost is called for). The H stands for Heat.

Distinct from the MGU-K, which does the same thing but at the rear axle rather than at the exhaust turbine. The K stands for Kinetic (energy).

Mercedes is brilliant at making good MGU-H units thanks to many years (decades?) of experience building turbocharged engines for HGVs.

Red Bull wants rid of them because with the Honda exit, RBR has to start making its own engines and it doesn't have the same expertise in making a good MGU-H.

It'll happen because it will hinder Mercedes and everyone's fed up with them winning.

Predictions for tomorrow? I think the McLarens will be on the soft tyre and Max will be on the medium as will Hamilton. But I still expect an easy Max win and this could be the race where the title starts to slip away from Hamilton because this is a race he should win.

The reason sport is so great is that it is unpredictable. Who would have predicted Hamilton finishing 5th today, for instance. Who predicted Pierre's win last year?

It’s not so great when he’s the only car capable of giving Max a proper race.  I’d love to be proved wrong and have the Mclarens challenge for the win but I don’t hold out a lot of hope, they’ll be happy just to be on the podium and beating each other will be their priority.  Max won’t break a sweat tommorow.

Next years shake up can’t come soon enough, if there are a few teams competing for the win each week it will be amazing.  I’m a self confessed Hamilton fan and while it’s been great seeing him do what no one ever though would be done and beat Schumacher’s records I’m glad Max has made it a proper battle this year.

Max might get a great start and steam off into the distance, never to be seen on the TV until he rounds the final corner, or be taken out by Danny Ric' at the first corner like what almost happened in the sprint race today. Max might get an awful start and be swamped like Lewis was today. Lewis might slipstream the Mclarens, take both of them and Max out at turn one and proceed unscathed for an easy victory, etc etc etc. It's not like we haven't seen these types of scenarios plenty of times previously, so I'm always quite surprised when people seem to call the race before it's even started.

Couldn't agree more. I have no interest in who wins as long as we can continue this exciting close battle right until the end of the season. It has been brilliant. Next year could be great, but I won't try to predict that. ;)

“We’re optimistic that next year’s car is going to help a lot,” said Brawn. “But I must say, I was surprised how difficult it was to overtake even with DRS.

“This was one of the races we selected because we thought there would be more opportunity. But as the race panned out that didn’t seem to be the case. Next year’s car will definitely be a step forward.”

Nonetheless Brawn said today’s sprint qualifying event has added “a different complexion on the race tomorrow than we thought we had after qualifying on Friday.”

“So I think it’s great in that respect,” he continued. “A little bit quiet at the front of the grid but then you get that at races anyway. Plenty of action in the middle, plenty of action at the start, a very exciting start. So I think it’s added to the whole weekend.”

Not sure how something obvious to everyone since it was announced Monza would be a sprint race managed to surprise him but the tedium of the race has to be unexpected otherwise people might start criticising the format.

The only way the sprint race works for me is if they try reverse grid. I don’t really care how they write the rules around that principle, but that’s the only way it looks any different to throwing a red flag 30% of the way through a Grand Prix.

Although the only reason that's true is their other Nascar of a rule change, the standing start after a mid race red.
