Formula One 2021 - DRAMA - #Michael Messy

In the Hamilton / Rosberg era, Merc used to 'allow them to race' up to the last pitstop, I can see this being a thing again with Russell.  They didn't have to bother too much with Bottas as for the most part, he wasn't really battling with Hamilton.  Russell's strong areas seem to be qualifying and (unfortunately for him something that doesn't happen all that often) very quickly adjusting to new conditions or tracks.

Merc will want him at the front, and fighting for wins, not automatically slotting 2nd position.  They need him to be able to take the win when Hamilton can't.  They want the guarantee of both the drivers and constructors championship, and if somehow Russell ends up with a decent gap at the top of the table, there is no way they don't ask Hamilton to wingman Russell unless they are somehow leagues ahead of the other drivers.  All it takes is a couple of poor performances / unlucky retirements.

Then when Hamilton moves off to make music / fashion / breed dogs (ok, I have no idea what he's into!) they'll need him to be ready to fight for wins alone.

I expect a Hamilton / Button type scenario, where they are all best mates, until it becomes clear that Russell isn't another Button, and then that realisation...

Guardian have some quotes from Corrina on Michael. I'll spoiler as it is probably the revelation of the Netflix doc.

Spoiler

https://www.theguardian.com/sport/2021/sep/08/michael-schumachers-wife-provides-update-on-former-f1-world-champion

“Everybody misses Michael, but Michael is here, different, but here,” Corinna says in the documentary entitled “Schumacher”, which is released on 15 September. “He still shows me how strong he is every day.

“We’re together. We live together at home. We do therapy. We do everything we can to make Michael better and to make sure he’s comfortable. And to simply make him feel our family, our bond. And no matter what, I will do everything I can. We all will. We’re trying to carry on as a family, the way Michael liked it and still does. And we are getting on with our lives.

Spoiler

Unfortunately this bit doesn't sound that positive:

“‘I miss Michael every day,” says Corinna. “But it’s not just me who misses him. It’s the children, the family, his father, everyone around him.”

How sure are you on this one? :eyebrows:

Hmm... If I am honest I don't think that is his job at all. I think he is being brought in as the (potential) future of the team, he's not been brought in to be lapdog number 2.

And for George being wingman is not a smart tactic for me. He does not want to be seen by the team as falling into the number 2 role. No one knows how long Ham will actually stick around for, he could very well end up at Merc for another 3-4 seasons. George can't play number 2 for too long if the team is ever going to see him as the leader.

I really don't see Lewis stying much longer. We're just at a generational tipping point of the sport again. One more championship take the record, then he'll be off. And maybe before then if he doesn;t like the 2022 car.

With kimi gone, the older driver is Alonso, then the second oldest is lewis, who is two years older than vettel, then it's Ricciardo

the 80's generation of F1 drivers will move on very soon.

I remember when I was 12-13 thinking that if I got good at Karting I could become the youngest ever F1 driver. I'm now 41 and the only driver older than me just retired.

I can still do it though!! I just need to apply myself, work hard, train hard, quit the sauce and really knuckle down. Although I am getting a takeaway tonight. Then after that it's basically the weekend. Plus I have a stag doo the following weekend so no point starting before then. Meh, I'll get around to it eventually.

A Masters World Championship as a support series would be fun. 10 laps of retired racers at historic circuits like Silverstone, Spa, Monza plus anyone with money who fancied it and could get a licence.

There's always NASCAR.

(in fact, that's not even true any more. the days where you could be a NASCAR superstar in your mnid 40s and well-fed was a long time ago).

If it's any consolation, I'm only 3 years older, being born in 1977 but the last time there was a driver older than me on the grid was 2013 (Webber).

Bloody hell, that's made me feel old. Only one driver older than I am! When I started watching F1, only three of those drivers had been born and there were drivers racing who had been born in the 1940's.

:blah:

We must both have started watching in 1988! Jean-Louis Schlesser and René Arnoux (both b.1948) were racing that year, and only Räikkönen, Alonso, Hamilton and Vettel were even alive then.

My dad was always into F1 when I was a kid, and 1988 is the year when I reckon I started paying attention (because we got Nigel Mansell's World Championship for Amstrad CPC and I loved it).

We also had an F1 management game (just called Formula One, I think) for the Amstrad. That had people like Arnoux and Laffite in it.

Good times.

Yeah, my first race was the 1988 Australian Grand Prix :). Provided a classic slice of Murray Walker:

'And that's ARNOUUUUXXXX'

That crash is 80% Berger's fault. :blah:

My first year was 87. I think I saw the odd race in 86 but 87 was my first full season. The best cars. They really look crap at slow speed mind! I bet that 911 I had a go in would be bags faster in the slow stuff.

The crushing realisation of just how old and shit you are when over half the grid was not even born when you left school. :blah:
