The Book of Boba Fett - December 2021, Disney +

Really bizarre episode not just because it shows up all the problems of the series (lame, boring, repetitive, Tatooine focus) as even more unnecessary than they already were, but:

Spoiler

But also we have some pretty significant things here that you'd presumably completely miss if you were just watching the Mandalorian seasons - the destruction on Mandalore, Din losing his status, getting a new ship, etc, where did all those happen? Oh in Ep 5 of Boba Fett. Oh, is it worth watching? No.

I swear the thing the jawas acquire is the middle bit of the pipe Han, Luke and Leia use to brace the trash compactor.

Yeah, I thought the same thing.

This was a storming episode. Loved the scene with the

Security / probe droids.

I have an amusing picture in my head of

Spoiler

Mando’s future bounties peeping sadly out of the dome in the back of his ship, like some shamefaced teenager from the back seat of a police car.

I’d love to know what went on behind the scenes. For starters it’s such an odd narrative choice. It felt like S3E1 of The Mandalorian in every way, shape and form apart from a very quick cameo at the end they could have hastily filmed in an afternoon and inserted after the fact. It also felt like it had a much, much bigger budget than the rest of the series so far. Did Disney execs watch the Boba Fett stuff and panic and make them move up the Mandalorian premiere to be part of it or something.

When he got pulled over by the cops

Spoiler

I was expecting his ship to still have the original registration, which would either get him in a whole heap of trouble or result in them shitting themselves and apologising furiously for having bothered a high ranking politician with diplomatic immunity, sending him off with a “thank you your majesty” as he promised not to take the matter any further.

the pod race was in Beggars Canyon. Thought it was a call back to Luke with the womp rat appearance.

Star Wars is a funny thing. That episode was the epitome of ‘small universe’ but I wasn’t mad at it at all.

I felt the same and wonder where that difference came from?

Spoiler

Tatooine was later in the episode. They spend actual screen time with him travelling there.  Mando already had a contract with the annoying mechanic for a new ship.  He had an actually connect and motivation to be there.

Beggers Canyon was treated as just local geography.

so much more using established stuff as background, rather than a nod and a wink? (even though it's that too)

It felt like an organic part of a bigger universe?

I get the positive response this episode got as an improvement over the standard set so far, and was relieved to see the production values improved to nearer to Mando levels, but that would have been middling at best as a Mando episode, really?

After the first act it all felt a bit low stakes and inconsequential. Did we need an impossibly long, slow and humour-free sequence of Uncle Peter building a prequel ship? It felt like a long toy advert. Commercial flights in Star Wars? Sure they exist in the universe but they exist in Indiana Jones's universe as well, we don't see them because that would be boring.

I did like it overall, and appreciate them moving the Mando story on a bit as well.

Dunno about 'middling' necessarily.....it'd be classed as a 'slower' mando episode for sure, but there's nothing wrong with a break in the pacing for few quieter character scenes if done well. And I think the key here is that it was done well. A lot of the uncle bob episodes have technically had 'more' going on in terms of plot development, but has often felt a bit limp due to the execution.

I really enjoyed this. Bryce Dallas Howard would be a good director pick for a full-length Star Wars movie I think.
Normally I'm not too big on nostalgia bait but this had so much good stuff and nice gags:

Spoiler

The ringworld looked awesome and was nice change of scenery after so much Tatooine, the Darksabre opening was ace, the Night of a Thousand Tears had some real Teminator vibes, the fight choreography was good - I really liked Mando's struggle with the blade, as a fan of Jedi Fallen Order it was nice to see a BD droid, I laughed at the alien rooster gag and the Naboo ship is ace, as were the scenes where Mando put it to the test.

Good stuff. It seems to be building to a pretty cool finale.

The one Mando says he has to see before helping Boba is Grogu, and that he’ll effectively disappear to do whatever happens in season 3 of The Mandalorian, before reappearing to continue the storyline in this next week.

Seems like it. As such my brother’s now hoping we’ll get something like

Spoiler

him turning with Groku and a dozen Jedi in tow, flying a different ship, wearing a diamond crown, with a robotic arm and handcuffed to a pregnant Wookie, offering no more explanation than “that’s a story for another time”.

I did a squee when I saw the Naboo Starfighter. And when Mando flew it through the same areas that Anakin did in the Pod Race. In fact much of the episode was like a love letter to the much unloved Phantom Menace.

"Wizard!"

The barriers Anakin crashes through in the pod race were still there and smashed up
