I quite fancy this because, y’know, just got a ps5 and it’s exclusive, but I don’t tend to like rogue likes, or schmups which, to be fair, I didn’t realise is what it was, so not sure if I £70 fancy it.

i think it’s the best “game” ever made so

tbh worth buying just for the atmosphere, sound design, storytelling. previously you would have been shit out of luck if you weren’t gud enuff to reach the later stages but you can now call in backup if you’re stuck

Yeah but who are you? What are your credentials? Why should I listen to your opinion? what is your existing opinion of rogue likes and shmups?

never played one before. My credentials are that I don’t usually like this sort of thing because I’m not that good at games and don’t have the time to invest to get good at them (Elden Ring et al) but when I got this at Christmas I played nothing else until I had got the Special Ending. Find a copy to borrow?

For anyone who prefers digital, Returnal is down to £36 on the US store - buy 2x $25 top-up cards from CD Keys, and redeem on a US PSN account - you can't buy it using a UK PSN account. Beware that the UK and US saves are not compatible, but you wanted an excuse to restart anyway, didn't you ;)

I generally don’t like roguelikes (I didn’t even particularly like Hades) and adored this. I think the reason it works so well is the core gameplay is so fun you are perfectly happy to start again from scratch. I also wouldn’t describe it as a shmup at all to be honest - it’s basically just an extremely slick third person shooter/action game to me. It’s brilliant at any price.

Ok I’ve bought it, it’s installed and I’m watching the opening cutscene. I’m holding you personally responsible if I don’t like it :P

Got to what I assume is the first boss, Phrike. I didn’t realise I was walking into a boss and I was on about 1/4 life. Still, managed to get him down to his last lifebar before he killed me, the git.

Also, Selene has heterochromia, which I also have (although mine is partial). It’s a debilitating disability* that goes underrepresented in media. Glad to see this game bringing awareness to it.

Spoiler

It isn’t in the slightest, it just means one of your eyes is a different colour to the other. It has no other affect on you or your sight in 99.9% of cases :P

Is there an easy way to tell if a weapon is better or not? I keep finding new weapons and apart from maybe the star rating, there doesn’t seem to be any way to tell if it’s better, does more damage etc?

Also there’s about a billion pickup items and no idea what any of them do except green = health.

The weapons have a number which reflects the amount of blocks across the 3 different stats for that weapon. I think the first stat is always "bonus damage". Weapons also have traits that you unlock (through kills) that make them more powerful. Don't always take a gun with a higher number - consider the stats and traits.

Pickups - you'll get used to this as you play. There's actually not that many types. Watch out for purple (malignant) items.

I've played a lot of hours on this game and have honestly never noticed that 🤣

I thought it might be a cybernetic implant, giving one eye a blue tinge. It's pretty obvious as she opens her eyes in the opening cut-scenes.

I’m not sure I really understand how this game works. At the moment my gaming time is pretty sporadic and I grab time here and then when I can, so stuff gets left on suspend a lot but as I understand it, this game doesn’t play well with that?

It's got a FromSoft style save. Suspend (Quit) the game from the menu and when you load back up you resume from that point and the save is lost.

Gotcha, thanks. I’ve been reluctant to play this since the first day as reading through the thread I could see people losing hours of progress after game resume crapped out etc.
