The Callisto Protocol - Spiritual Dead Space successor

The Digital Foundry guys have said that the PC version is fundamentally broken, unfinished and unplayable due to massive shader compilations issues and should not be purchased by anyone as it completely undermines any attempt the game makes to draw you in. There's no PC capable of escaping these issues at the moment.

John Linneman spoke a bit about the things he liked - specifically he liked the combat because there was no real timing to it, just knowing "when to attack" while holding down the directional dodges. The problem is that according to others, the enemies just have a set number of attacks which they'll just rattle through and then they go passive so you can have your turn to mash melee for a bit. There's no skill to it aside from being able to count up to 4.

Sounds terrible to me, but I guess if you just really dig the visual of ducking, diving and counterpunching you might like it?

Sounds like the mandate was to get it out before the Dead Space remake at all costs, and i can understand why they would want to do that, but it has led to underbaked combat design and technical problems. Still, one to pick up eventually, looks like it would make a decent one-two with Evil West.

There's a 'fix' for the shader comp stutter on Steam:

Been watching a streamer play and its not that bad. Still some odd bits of jitter, but playable. Not that I'm recommending people buy it on Steam but if you already have and are sticking with it, definitely try this out.

Watching the DF tech review, this looks like the sweatiest game since Fight Night 3! The models and environments look incredible, those character models are outstanding. Really hope the team can tweak the gameplay and techical issues, because there's clearly been an awful lot of effort put into the overall presentation.

Sounds like anyone looking forward to a new game today should be diverting those funds to Midnight Suns instead.

Yeah but Marvel, fuck that.

Watched Ellajaz play a chunk on Twitch earlier. It looks sound to me. Defo purchase sub 30 quid.

Got too much other shit to play first (GoW, Horizon, Tsushima etc)

I stand corrected! Perhaps I've been misled and there's some other reason why the codes didn't seem to be being advertised. I had read on HotUKDeals that a work around had been found if Argentinians access an older version of the store, so perhaps that's what's happening.

Oh well, good news!

G2A are scum and deal with stolen keys.

Not on PC though. I want to give it a whirl, but not in the state it’s obviously in.

I still don’t understand the workings of just why an engine like Unreal is so horribly buggered so much of the time when running on PCs. I mean, the sodding engine is designed as a development too to be used on a PC isn’t it? What the hell happens?

About an hour in. Finding melee a bit tricky but so far I’m impressed and enjoying it greatly. It’s what I expected, in a good way.

The visuals are really good. I’m not sure the animation/lip sync is quite up to naughty dog standards but the faces/character models are next level stuff

Yeah. Nice graphics. Not played far enough in to get a feel for the combat rhythm.

Game crashed just as it was finally handing full control over to me - literally as I was standing up from my bunk at the start.

The patch will d/l in 25 hours. I'll have another go on Sunday.

I’m struggling to recall such a comprehensive pile-on. The reviews aren’t even bad. The whole forum has been gripped by some kind of mania. And yet:

I don’t know what’s wrong with gamers these days; it’s like they want the games to be bad. Bloody YouTubers looking for likes…

I think the issue is that we’re spoiled by some of the AAA big hitters. The Last of Us, Spider-Man, God of War etc have off the scale production values from studios at the top of their game, and we expect everything else to scratch that itch to the same degree, and it just isn’t realistic.
