So they are charging for stuff they have no idea if it's any good or not? What happens if they implement them (beyond the concept art they must have at minimum done so far to even know they have 12 of them) and they're shit - they just ship them anyway?

I think they probably have an idea if they’re going to be any good* or not. They’ve presumably already made quite a few and are well versed with the method and would have a good handle on what works and what doesn’t work. I mean, I’m not a developer or animator but I suspect if you can make beheading animation 1, beheading animation 2 would follow a very similar development pattern.

I don’t know the developer or what they’re QC process is but hopefully if they are somehow shit* they wouldn’t ship them or make different ones.

I mean, this argument comes with any season pass with extra content you buy at launch. You don’t really know if the Xenoblade 3/Mario Rabbids/Assasins Creed/BotW dlc is going to be any cop but many people buy it because they know they’ll be happy enough with the main game that more of it, or extra outfits etc, will appeal. You’re buying a bit blind here and this is nothing new.

The season pass includes extra campaign levels, a horde mode and these new (emphasis on new) animations. I think the studio/publishers dropped the ball on their messaging here as a lot of people assumed it was locked off content.

*beyond technical issues and effort I’m not sure how you judge how good or bad a death animation is.

Massively. If there's new ways to die and new things to kill you, talk about those.

It's like producing a new DLC snow world for your platform game but advertising it as "new footstep sound effects" or some shit without actually mentioning why. Obviously if these are actually just more generic animations that can be triggered by standard enemies in the main game, then it's very clear it's just intensely embarrassing padding to justify the cost of the Season Pass.

The problem with Single Player games is that future, poorly defined content for sale now just makes me want to wait a month or two and get everything for half the price they're asking now. At least with Multiplayer games there's that inherent pressure to be there day one while there are still people as shit as me playing.

It having a "season pass" seems strange for what is pitched primarily as a single player immersive experience isn't it? I didn't even realise it had multiplayer. When does the season run from and to?

I don’t know. That’s just what they call them these days.

Far Cry, Assassin’s Creed, countless others are primarily single player games and have season passes. I assume it’s used when the new content drops in waves rather than all in one. Nintendo don’t tend to call them season passes.

The studio head said fans were asking for more death animations so that’s why they’re making them.

Though I’m not sure how you can even be a fan of a first entry in a franchise* that you haven’t played yet from a studio on its first release and also apparently need more death animations when you don’t even know how many there are to begin with so I suspect said fans is actually 1 person with 3 different accounts on Reddit.

As an aside, I think a lot of people would just naturally assume, without giving it any real thought, that any story expansion that would have new enemy types and environmental hazards would pretty much HAVE to include some new death animations but hey ho.

*I think they have plans for further games beyond the first entry assuming it sells well.

The whole death animations thing is really weird. I'd never go out of my way to fail at a game, trying to trigger a deliberate fail is often boring and takes effort, especially when someone will likely cut and compile the whole lot into a nice youtube video a week after the game comes out.

So, they're going to add extra death animations next year when most people have presumably played and finished it? And sell them as extras?

What?

There’s a new campaign/story dlc and a horde mode to watch them in.

But @Down by Law, you're a dedicated gamer, and somebody who wants to get the most out of the products you buy. Why wouldn't you want to get the achievement for seeing every possible death? From what I understand, many people who play video games place a great deal of importance on getting all the trophies. Surely you see how important it is now to make sure you have access to all possible modes of being rendered inert.

So, the animations themselves aren't being sold as extras - it's part of legit story DLC.

Well, we don't know really. We know there's DLC and we know there are new death animations. If there are new environmental hazards and enemies then perhaps talk about that rather than the thing that any normal person would assume is included in both those things anyway.

One thing is for sure, whoever is in charge of marketing the DLC has done a splendid job :hat:

I want this to be good, and I hope it’s great, but Jesus get out of your own way, devs, with the fucking poor marketing of ‘extras’ that most people expect to be in the game anyway.

What next, new gun sound effects £9.99

I'm slightly worried this is going to be a bit poo. I don't know why as I'm proper looking forward to it.

I really want it to be good, it's playing my tune for sure. But I'm not slamming down 50 notes for a pre-order on the off chance a brand new studio can knock it out of the park. But I'll pay that much for a stonking Dead Space-ish revival if it's decent.

I'm quitely optimistic. Glen Schofield is a proven director with good horror ideas. I'm sure it will be up to scratch in atmosphere and gameplay mechanics. Whether it has good level design and gels overall will depend on the new team. I've pre-ordered the disc version so even if it turns out not as good as Dead Space, I can always sell it later. I'm sure it will be a 7/10 game, fingers crossed though it's better than that.

I'm also not playing Dead Space remake until I've played this.

First review has appeared early, from Evening Standard:

Some excerpts:

'Welcome to The Callisto Protocol, the scariest horror game of the year.'

'What makes this experience so terrifying is how immersive it is.'

'the graphics are superb. Shockingly so, in fact: they really do homage to the sci-fi setting. The expressions on the characters’ faces (spookily similar to the actors voicing them) are lovingly and realistically rendered; the monsters look gruesomely realistic'

'The game is only 12-14 hours long, but it also manages to pack an awful lot in'

'Let’s be clear: this game is not for everybody. But The Callisto Protocol has set out to do one thing – create a superb horror/survival game – and in that, it has delivered magnificently. Just don’t play it with the lights off.'

Reads like it was written by someone who never played a game before. "Don't play it with the lights off", that's a good one.

I’ve just read the review and when they get to this bit they don’t even explain why it’s not for everybody. That statement leads me to think it must have niggly flaws, or that only people who love the genre will enjoy it, or anything really, but how are we supposed to know without them explaining?
